Abstract

This research is an analysis of the novel Girl, Woman, Other (2019) by Bernardine Evaristo. The purpose of the analysis is to reveals the issue of structural oppression towards black women and the struggle against the structural oppression in the novel  Girl, Woman, Other (2019) by Bernardine Evaristo. The issue of structural oppression refers to the form of structural oppression against black women and the form of struggle that characters do against the oppression towards them. This analysis is using the concept of intersectionality from feminism study which proposed by Kimberlee Crenshaw. The analysis uses of the concept is based on the interpretation of text and context of the novel. The analysis also uses fictional devices such as plot and setting to expose the meaning. The result of this study shows the form of structural oppression against black women and the struggle that black women show against the oppression.

Abstract

The aim of this study to find out how far Sherman Alexie’s novel The Absolutely True Diary of a-Part Time Indian (2007) bring ups and reveals the issue of life transformation which is done by the main character in this novel. It is intended also to find out how the fictional devices; plot (conflict) and setting in the novel give contribution in showing the meaning of life transformation. The result shows that the novel has  represented the Indian’s life by portraying Indian as a poor, an alcoholic, and unwell educated tribe. The writer also finds out another positive side of Indian through the main character who showed in the novel. The common stereotype of Indian is not reflected by an Indian teenager who bring a hope for the future of Indian.

Abstract

This article describes how to teach writing a descriptive text about someone by using the CSW (Catch, Speak and Write) game for Senior High School students of the tenth grade. The CSW (Catch, speak, and Write) game is one of games that invites students to play while learning. The CSW game or Catch, Speak and Write game, is a game that uses picture and chocolate as the media. By using the CSW game, students will play while learning by answering a few questions through a picture with chocolate as a media that will be thrown and caught by the student before the student answer the questions. By using the CSW game in teaching and learning process, the teacher’s role is very important to make the students more active and enthusiastic in learning so that the students’ difficulties in writing will be easier with a comfortable atmosphere. Abstrak Artikel ini menjelaskan bagaimana cara mengajarkan menulis descriptive text tentang seseorang dengan menggunakan the CSW (Catch, Speak and Write) game untuk siswa SMA kelas X. The CSW (Catch, speak, and Write) game adalah salah satu permainan yang mengajak siswa bermain sambil belajar. The CSW game atau Catch, Speak and Write game, adalah suatu permainan yang menggunakan chocolate dan gambar sebagai media pendukung. Di dalam the CSW Game siswa akan bermain sambil belajar dengan menjawab beberapa pertanyaan melalui sebuah gambar yang didukung dengan media chocolate yang akan dilempar dan ditangkap siswa sebelum siswa tersebut menjawab pertanyaan. Di dalam Penggunaan the CSW game guru sangat berperan penting untuk membuat siswa lebih aktif dan bersemangat dalam belajar sehingga kesulitan siswa dalam menulis terasa lebih mudah dengan suasana yang lebih nyaman.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know how were the causes of the students’ problems in writing recount text and the most dominant causes of problems in writing recount text. The online research was conducted on 21 Mei 2020 at google form. In this research, the Senior High Schools’ Students of West Sumatera that had studied recount text as the subject, with the total of respondents are 80 students. The researcher used questionaire as the instrument of this research and using descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the result of this research, the researcher used descriptive analysis. The finding of this research shows that there were four indicators of causes that made students had problems in writing recount text, they were interference first language, lack knowledge in grammatical rules, lack of vocabulary and difficult in organization. Then, the most dominant causes that made students had problems in writing recount is interference first language with the percentage is 86.3%, followed by lack of vocabulary with the percentage is 74.5%, lack knowledge in grammatical rules with the percentage is 68%, and the last is difficult in organization with 48.45%.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a play written by Martin Mcdonagh entitled The Pillowman (2003). This analysis look at the injustice after civil right movement is not only in real life, but in literature there is a problem the injustice that attacks the lower class because their profession considered lowly than the upper class. This analysis employs Marxist literary theory to explain the phenomena in the play. In this analysis, the protagonist’s injustice towards human rights can been seen through two ways: how he faces and shows several forms of the injustice towards human rights in America after civil right movement that still occurred. This analysis also depends a lot on the narrator to determine which parts of the play are used as the data. The result of the study shows that Katurian experienced injustice to get his righs and injustice in law.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a play written by Reg Cribb, entitled Last Cab to Darwin (2003). It explored the issue about suicidal ideation which is an irrational mindset by a person who think his lives is not useful for having a terminal illness and to what extent the character and setting contributed to identify the issue. This play  related to the concept of Death Instinct (thanatos) by Sigmund Freud. The uses of the theory is based on the interpretation of the text and context of the play. The result of this analysis show the causes of suicidal ideation by two groups. First is suffering. Second is hopelessness.

Abstract

This thesis is the analysis of a novel which written by Patricia McCormick entitled Never Fall Down (2012). It explores the issue of endeavour to survive which reflected by the main character. It is also intended to find out the contribution of fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict), and setting in revealing the issue of endeavour to survive. This analysis is related to the concept of life instinct which developed by Sigmund Freud that is supported by the text-based and context-based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows about the way the main character survive in dealing with any situation in his life by changing his mindset and behaviour.

Abstract

This article discusses a novel entitled The Hate U Give (2017) by Angie Thomas. The issue raises structured racism against African-Americans after the existence of human rights and to find out to what extent the implied author contributed to expressing the issue. This analysis uses Gramsci's Hegemony theory, interpretation of the text and context to dissect the contents of the novel. The results of the analysis shows that structured racism can be seen in two forms: the media and institutions. First of the two is the media as a stereotype circulator and the last of the two the institution discriminates against African-Americans.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of a novel written by Kamila Shamsie, entitled Home Fire (2017). It explored the issue about strategies carried out by the British Government and ISIS (Islamic States of Iraq and Syria) in an effort to deceive British Muslims and to what extent the implied author contributed to identify the issue. This novel analysis related to the concept of Orientalism and Islamophobia by Edward Said. The uses of the theory is based on the interpretation of the text and context of the novel. The result of this analysis showed deceptions have done by two groups with different strategies. First, deception by British Government by manipulation and limited rights. Meanwhile, ISIS create propaganda.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of the political muddle of American government and to find out how the contribution of fictional elements (character, setting, plot/conflict, and stage direction) in revealing the issue of the political muddle of American government. This analysis is done through text-based and context-based interpretation which is related to the concept of Power Relation by Michel Foucault. The results of this analysis shows the kinds of the political muddle of American government on the outside and on the inside of America.
