Abstract

The research aims to improve student's ability in english  by using the stad learning strategy implementation (students-team-achievement-division). The design of this research is classroom action research, in which a researcher and collaborator take part actively in the class to conduct teaching and make observations during the activity. In this study, researcher used cooperative learning type STAD or Students-Team-Achivement-Division. In the type of STAD cooperative learning, students will be divided into groups of 4-6 people who prioritize class heterogeneity in academic achievement. The researchers provided a lesson, and students in the group are expected to master the lesson. The results of the research showed that the STAD type cooperative learning is effective in improving students' ability in English. The implementation of cycle 1 and cycle 2 showed an increase in student achievement. There were 9 (45%) students who were successful and 11 (55%) of them failed. Then, the success increased to 20 (100%) students in cycle 2. In other words, all students can achieve learning achievement in cycle 2.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat dasar bertujuan agar peserta didik dapat mengembangkan kompetensi berkomunikasi sehingga dapat meningkatkan daya saing bangsa dalam masyarakat global. Kemampuan bahasa Inggris dapat dilihat dari kekayaan kosakata yang dimiliki. Mengingat pentingnya peranan kosakata dalam berbahasa maka pembelajaran kosakata menjadi perhatian penting dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Mempelajari kosakata Bahasa Inggris bukanlah hal yang mudah karena seringkali peserta didik mengalami kesulitan dalam perolehan kosakata baru itu. Salah satu upaya kreatif dalam pembelajaran agar menarik yaitu menggunakan media flashcard dengan harapan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris dan menambah kosakata peserta didik. Metode pelaksanaan yang digunakan adalah dengan tahap-tahap sebagai berikut: persiapan, pelaksanaan, evaluasi.

Abstract

This is classroom action research aims to increase learning outcomes and competence of students through the implementation of ESP with Competency-based Instruction Approach. The research was conducted at Politeknik Palu with 30 students as the subjects of the research. The data were gathered through observation and competency test. The results reveal that 16 students or 53.3% succeeded in cycle 1. Then, it increased to 25 students or 83.3% in cycle 2. In conclusion, the implementation of ESP with Competency-based Instruction Approach can improve students’ learning outcomes and competencies.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an English learning approach where the topics and methods used in learning are made based on the needs of learning English. This study aims to develop based teaching materials English for Specific Purposes appropriate to student needs. The need for learning English was identified using the questionnaire obtained from students of the Agricultural Products Processing Technology study program as research subjects. Data were analyzed using descriptive techniques in the numbers and percentages. The result showed that the needs of the students for the ESP English course are very diverse, it can be concluded that English is not only for their current needs but also for future work purposes.

Abstract

Reading comprehension skills in English are needed of them by using a learning model, namely Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD). The purpose of the study was to improve reading comprehension skills in English. This study used a classroom action research design. The learning materials were readings related to agriculture and language structure. The results showed that the STAD model effectively improved reading comprehension skills in English. The implementation of learning in the first and second cycles showed an increase in student learning achievement. There were 14 (70%) students who succeeded, and 6 (30%) failed. Furthermore, the success increased to 20 (100%) students in the second cycle. The conclusion is the STAD type learning model can improve students' comprehension ability in reading English and increase students' role in active learning.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify and classify spelling and vocabulary errors made by students in the process of learning English. This study utilizes an error analysis approach to investigate students’ written work, emphasizing spelling and vocabulary errors. Methodology: This study utilizes an error analysis approach to investigate students’ written work, emphasizing spelling and vocabulary errors. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze students’ written assignments. Main Findings: The findings indicate that the most frequent writing errors involve prepositions and pronouns, each accounting for 0.04%, followed by article at 0.07%, and word choice at 0.09%. The most frequent writing error identified is related to spelling, accounting for 2.52%. The most common vocabulary-related writing error was punctuation, accounting for 6.78%, followed by subject-verb agreement at 0.45%. Errors in fragments and capitalization each made up 0.23%, while errors in the use of tenses (0.07%) and omissions (0.04%). Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this research lies in its focus on two micro-linguistic aspects (spelling and vocabulary) that are rarely explored in previous studies. Using an error analysis approach, it identifies and categorizes students’ errors, offering practical insights and contributions to improving the teaching of academic English writing at the tertiary education level.

Abstract

English is a compulsory subject that must be taken by every student at Politeknik Palu. The material provided must fit the needs of students and be useful for them. So it is necessary to do a needs analysis so that students get the material they need to support their learning process at this time or in the future. This study was conducted to analyze the need for learning English based on ESP. The research was conducted using descriptive methods and qualitative approaches. The research sample is students who have taken English courses in the Agricultural Products Processing Technology Study Program. Sampling using a purposive random sampling technique. The research instrument used a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive techniques in the form of numbers and percentages. The results showed that the needs of the Agricultural Products Processing Technology study program students for ESP English courses varied greatly, so it could be concluded that they needed English not only for their current needs but also for future work purposes.
