Abstract

Service-learning is one of the learning methods that combine learning in the classroom with service activities to the community. In service-learning, students are invited to apply the lecture material in solving the problems in the community directly. In the process, many student characters will be trained and developed. This research focuses on developing character assessment instruments that develop after the implementation of service-learning activities in Biology Education Program, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research is to develop a character assessment instrument in the form of questionnaires for students, especially in Biology Education at Sanata Dharma University. Questionnaires developed through the stages of the development of the instrument, including determining the purpose of the preparation of the instrument, find the relevant theory, compile instrument indicators, compile instrument, content validation, and revisions based on input validator. Instrument validation is done through content validation with expert judgment. Based on the result of content validation by expert judgment, Aiken index is obtained at 0.85 with high validation category. Based on these results, the character assessment questionnaire developed can be implemented in the learning to assess the character development of students after implementing service-learning. DOI: http://e-journal.usd.ac.id/index.php/IJIET/article/view/957/749

Abstract

Abstract

The pandemic COVID-19 has disrupted global society and its order, including the educational sector. Amid the pandemic, students of Sanata Dharma University Yogyakarta felt the impact. Reports from other countries indicated the pandemic situations to increase levels of stress and anxiety among college students. Sometimes, a difficult situation does not always cause negative responses. Some studies suggested that the pandemic may affect positive attitudes (optimism). This study aimed to find factors that contribute in developing optimism attitude among college students of Sanata Dharma University. Researchers employed online questionnaire to gather informations from 137 respondents. Three methods of analysis: exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used. Results indicated reasoning and experience as independent variables, and optimism as a dependent variable. Factor of type of information was suggested as mediating variable. Further, a structural model reported that Goodness of fit indices from the model: χ2 = 63.922 (df = 55; alpha = 0.05), probability = 0.192, CMIN/DF = 1.162(≤ 2.00), RMSEA = 0.023 (≤ 0.08), GFI = 0.970 (≥ 0.90), TLI = 0.985 (≥ 0.90).

Abstract

The use of synthetic dyes in the textile industry has a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to explore natural dyes that are more environmentally friendly. The aim of this research is to find natural dyes from Acalypha siamensis leaves. In this research, compounds contained in A. siamensis extract were identified using FT-IR and GC-MS instruments, then simulations were carried out of the reactions that occurred between cinnamaldehyde (E), cellulose in cotton, and alum mordant using quantum chemistry software. ORCA 5.0.2 and Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD). The cinnamaldehyde compound is the main constituent compound in A. siamensis leaf extract. Based on the simulation results: the reaction between cinnamaldehyde (E), cellulose in cotton fabric, and alum mordant is energetically favorable. The reaction simulation results are in line with experimental research, the reaction of cellulose in cotton fabric, alum mordant, and cinnamaldehyde produces a brownish green color. A. siamensis leaves have potential as a dye in eco-prints.

Abstract

Biology education in secondary schools faces challenges in implementing practical work that is relevant to the learning material, one of which is biotechnology. Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Kota Yogyakarta, or the Yogyakarta Biology Teacher Working Group, has identified an urgent need for training in a biotechnology experiment that is simple, applicable, and takes place in the context of school and community learning. This Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) or Community Service Activities provided an innovative solution in the form of applicable kombucha-making training for biotechnology-supported practical learning. The goal of this activity was to improve the Biology Teacher Working Group's ability to implement appropriate kombucha-making training to support the biotechnology learning experience. This activity was carried out using a training method. The training participants were 22 teachers from 10 schools around Yogyakarta. The implementation of the training included delivering materials, practicing making kombucha, and collecting data. The data collection instruments included test questions and questionnaires. The PkM activity of simple biotechnology practical training through making kombucha for the biology teachers of MGMP Kota Yogyakarta was successfully implemented following the objectives, namely improving the teachers’ competence in terms of knowledge and skills, especially in carrying out biotechnology experiments. The teachers' training provided them with theoretical and practical knowledge about making kombucha, as well as kombucha's benefits, which could be applied in the contexts of education and society. The training also met the partners' expectations, specifically by providing alternative practical themes that were part of the learning materials and could be implemented in schools with limited resources. The next step in this PkM activity is to collaborate with MGMP partners to organize simple and applicable practical training, so that the training's impact is greater. Practical training can be a way for universities to help teachers improve their skills.
