Abstract

Abstract

Abstract – Usually, “violence” is a word that associated with a condition where the behaviour was done by a man towards a woman. This condition made us can’t see the other subjectivities, such as when a man experiencing violence especially from the women in dating, that usually considered weaker than men. There are some data that shown this discourse really happen to men. For example, Weiss’ research (2010) in America shown that 46% of violence that happen to men was done by women. Even there are some statistics and other research, but unlikely the violence against women discourse, this discourse still not yet appeared clearly in the public, as we know that Indonesian civil law have not yet legalized any law regarding to dating unlike the marriage. As a qualitative researcher, this condition made me feel interested to do more research about this topic and find how men interpret the violence that happens from their girlfriend to them and made this discourse doesn’t clearly appear in the public/academic area. The results shown that appears some form of masculinity like romantic masculinity or hegemonic that generally place them on a subject position with a high expectation of power practice as a man and made them interpret the behaviour that they receive, especially the violence behaviour as a non-violence behaviour. Generally, discursive formations that emerge from all participant shown in a different form, but have the same kind of formations that emerge from violence against women so we can conclude that violence against man or violence against women have the same importance to emerge it to the public or academic area. Keywords: man, masculinity, discourse

Being a pastor is a challenging life calling, not only in terms of duties and responsibilities, but also due to the lifestyle “demands”. On a personal level, a pastor is an individual who still needs to take care of their own welfare as well as being cared for. The current study is a qualitative research that aims to understand the psychological well-being dynamics of pastors. There are two informants in this study. Results showed that factors supporting the psychological well-being of the two pastors are self-determination, skill and positive values acquired from the seminary, adaptive coping strategies, and social support.

Abstract

“Violence”, in general, is a word associated with conduct more often perpetrated by males, whether against females or other males. Indeed, even in the field of ‘dating’, discussions on violence often deal specifically with it being against women, so that the term, “violence against women” has arisen. However, certain data indicates that this discussion should also involve violence against men. This discourse had apparently not yet surfaced, so the authors were interested in examining and seeking out what were male concepts, regarding any violence they may have experienced whilst in relationships. The results emerging indicated the existence of a number of concepts on particular facets of masculinity, those being of masculinity of either a romantic or a hegemonic nature. Overall, the situation puts males in the position of being the subject of high expectations of power, making the behavior of their partners to be considered as being non-violence. The overall organization of the discourse emerged in various forms, however these were of the same type as the discussion which has emerged concerning violence against women, so that it may be concluded that both of these topics are of similar importance, when it comes to their discussion.

Abstract

Higher education is expected to be a place to nurture youth or young generation who is strong, devoted to God and able to work for humanity. However, this highly trusted institution still faces ambiguous ethical issues that are shown by the mental attitude and behaviour of lecturers and students, such as plagiarism, sexual harassment and other immoral acts. Various incidents of ethical violations can be found in private and public universities, which are affiliated with certain religions or not. This research investigates the source of ethical considerations which underlie the relationship between lecturers and students in realizing their spirit and dignity as academic community. This research was conducted in four cities, namely Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Surabaya and Ruteng, using a qualitative approach, with the interview method and FGD to gather information. The ethical framework theory of Ibn Miskawayh and Immanuel Kant is used to analyze the data found. The results showed a variety of ethical sources referred by lecturers and students in carrying out their participation in higher education; the most widely referred sources are informants from religion, culture and objective rationality. The data also shows the existence of this ethical reference contestation, for example in the case of violations of sexual ethics, the male and the lecturers are more advantageous than students and women because cultural ethics is more in favour of men. Although all universities studied have a professional code of ethics, the ethical integrity of individual lecturers and students is no less important to be strengthened.
