Abstract

Background: Bacterial skin infection is the third most common health problem in Indonesia resulting from poor personal and environmental hygiene. The most common bacterial skin infection is the pyoderma. This study aims to find out relation between personal hygiene and environmental with the incidence of pyoderma in RSI Sultan Agung Semarang.Design and Methods: The study type was analytic observational with case control design. The sample consisted of 30 respondents RSI patients Sultan Agung for case group and 30 persons as control group is the neighbors of patients who have similar characteristics and are not suffering pyoderma. The data used are secondary data from medical records and primary data from questionnaires filled out by respondents, then the data were analyzed with chi-square and to determine the correlation power there was used a contingency coefficient test. Results: It was found that the good and the bad individual hygene for the case group were 3.3% and 66.7% respectively, while for the control group the good and bad individual hygene were 80.0% and 20.0% respectively. Chi-square test resulted in p=0,000 with contingency coefisien of 0.426. It was found that the good and the bad environmental hygene for the case group were 56.7% and 43.3% respectively, while for the control group the good and bad environmental hygene were 83.3% and 16.3% respectively. Chi-square test resulted in p=0,024 with contingency coefisien of 0.27.Conclusion: There was a significant correlation between the personal and environmental hygiene and poderma insicence at the RSI Sultan Agung with a moderate relationship between individual hygiene and weak relationship between environmental hygene (Sains Medika, 3(1):24-30).

Abstract

Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays exposure causes skin inflammation and pigmentation lead to decrease skin lightness. Corncobs (Zea mays) contain flavonoids which can act as antioxidant to prevent free radicals and protect the skin pigmentation. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of corncob extract cream on skin pigmentation exposed to UVB rays. This pre-posttest control group study was applied to 25 guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus sp) randomly divided into five groups. Corncob extract cream was given every day 20 min before and 4 h after UVB exposure. The UVB exposure total dose was 780 mJ/cm2. Mexameter examination was carried out on the 1st day and 28th day after treatment. There were significantly differences in the lightness level and the mean melanin index (MI) difference of guinea pigs before and after intervention on various groups (p<0.05). No significantly different of the MI between pre- and post-treatment was observed on normal control group (0.22) and negative control group (-1.06) (p>0.05). However, significantly different of the MI was observed on positive control group (-4.01), corncob 40% group (-2.72), and corncob 30% group (-2.03) (p<0.05). In conclusion, corncob extract cream can inhibit the skin pigmentation due UVB rays exposure.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period with an age range of 10 to 24 years, a transitional phase from childhood (dependent) to adulthood (independent) and this is a normal occurrence in human life. A teenager during this period will experience a lot of development and growth in order to find his identity and identity. Various changes will emerge both psychologically, physically (puberty) and the social environment. The aim of carrying out community service for female students at State Elementary School (SDN) VII Batursari is to determine whether there is an increase in knowledge and practice of personal hygiene regarding reproductive health. The method used is education and hand washing practices. The participants were 30 female students from SDN VII Batursari Mranggen Demak. Before and after the activity the participants were given a questionnaire about knowledge totaling 20 question items, as an evaluation of the activities carried out. Knowledge scores before and after the activity were compared and analyzed using the paired t-test. The average knowledge score before the activity was 50.25 and the score after 87.80, while the results of the analysis obtained a p value = 0.0001. In short, counseling about reproductive health and personal hygiene practices influence the reproductive health of female students at SDN VII Batursari Mranggen Demak.

Abstract

Xerosis cutis is a chronic dry skin condition aggravated by impaired skin barrier function and increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Decreased levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) contribute to prolonged inflammation and hinder tissue regeneration. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) contains flavonoids and vitamin C, which possess anti-inflammatory and angiogenic properties, making it a promising candidate for natural topical therapy. This study aimed to determine the effect of cucumber extract cream on IL-10 and VEGF levels in the skin of female Wistar rats with grade II xerosis cutis induced by acetone and ethanol. This experimental research employed a post-test only control group design. A total of 30 Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: normal control, negative control, positive control (10% ceramide cream), and two treatment groups receiving cucumber extract cream at concentrations of 3% and 5%. Following the induction of xerosis, the respective creams were applied topically for 14 consecutive days. Results showed that administration of 5% cucumber extract cream significantly increased VEGF levels (715.75 ± 152.65 ng/L) and IL-10 levels (200.35 ± 43.49 pg/mL) compared to the negative control (VEGF 494.29 ± 95.05 ng/L; IL-10 120.62 ± 22.11 pg/mL, p<0.05). The 3% cucumber extract cream also elevated VEGF (522.96 ± 115.48 ng/L) and IL-10 (197.86 ± 31.32 pg/mL), though less effectively than the 5% formulation. Meanwhile, the group treated with ceramide 10% cream showed increases in VEGF (694.87 ± 180.52 ng/L) and IL-10 (140.85 ± 32.42 pg/mL), indicating that cucumber extract at 5% comparable to ceramide therapy. In conclusion, cucumber extract cream, particularly at 5% concentration, significantly enhances IL-10 and VEGF levels in the skin of xerosis cutis model rats. These findings indicate its potential as an effective natural topical therapy for reducing inflammation and promoting skin regeneration in xerosis cutis caused by chemical exposure.
