Abstract

Cassava waste can be utilized as raw material for biodegradable plastics. This research studied the influence of sorbitol, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and the gelatinization temperature in the preparation of biodegradable plastic from cassava waste. 12 gram of starch from cassava waste was stired with 68.2 gram of water-ethanol solution at 75 rpm and is fixed during this study. While the amount of sorbitol, CMC and gelatinization temperature are varied. The best results are showed at 44.90% in water absorption, 101.4 MPa in tensile strength, 76.57% in elongation, 4.17 MPa in Young's modulus, and decomposition time are 64, 67, and 79 days.

Abstract

Membrane technology has been the methods in the management of clean water, one of polymer that used as membrane materials is polyethersulfone (PES). However, PES is easy to fouling because it is hydrophobic. Fouling will cause a decrease in membrane performance. In this study, PES membrane was modified using hydrophilic additives, namely an alloy of Mg(OH)2 and chitosan. This research study the effect of additives on the performance and anti-fouling properties of the membrane. The membrane preparation was carried out using polymer blending method. The dope solution was made by mixing 18% PES with additives in the form of an alloy of Mg(OH)2 and chitosan with varying compositions of 1% and 5%, with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent, and a mixture of ethanol and water as a non-solvent. The membrane characterization was evaluated by analyzing the functional groups. Membrane performance was carried out by measuring the flux and permeability of pure water, selectivity or rejection, as well as membrane anti-fouling tests. From the results of the study, the largest permeability value in PES/NMP membrane with the addition of 5% additive (membrane N5) was 12.9 L/m2.h.bar, rejection was 33.54% with good anti-fouling properties.

Abstract

This community service activity is aimed at increasing face-to-face (offline) student practice and knowledge about the practice of preventing post-Covid 19 symptoms. The activity was held at the 69 State Elementary School (SDN) in Gampong Kopelma Darussalam Banda Aceh. The target of this socialization activity is students who spend most of their time playing and studying. The students of SDN 69 are mostly a group of sixth grade students. This service activity began with communication with the teachers at SDN 69 to agree on a time for socialization. Furthermore, at the meeting, brochures were also distributed containing information about the materials needed for the process of making hand sanitizers, manufacturing procedures, theoretical basis, and tricks in making hand sanitizers. Direct practice is carried out with demonstrations of the manufacturing process to finished products accompanied by direct discussions with students. This activity has been able to increase knowledge, insight, and can also improve students' attitudes in Gampong Kopelma Darussalam Banda Aceh, so that it has the opportunity to inhibit the spread and transmission of post-Covid 19 symptoms in Banda Aceh.
