Abstract

In this work, cockle (Clinocardium nuttalli) shell waste is massively produced by many restorant in Banda Aceh Indonesia. The cockle (Clinocardium nuttalli) shell is known high calcium; therefore it is potential to be used as calcium source of catalyst for transesterification reaction. The aim of thisresearch is to study the synthesis and characterization of Clinocardium nuttalli shell. Clinocardium nuttalli shell was prepared by calcinating the shell at 500 and 800°C. Synthesis of solid catalys was employed for transesterification reaction of calophyllum inophyllum L. oil. The reaction was carried out in batch reactor at temperature of 65oC and ratio of mrthanol:oil of 3:1 - 12:1. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Analysis data by XRD confirmed that the obtained crystal calcined at 500 oC areCaCO3 calcite, CaCO3 veterite, and CaO. XRD patterns of the colcined shell at 800 oC shows sharp peaks of crystalline phase of CaO. The best characteristics is obtained at calcined catalyst of 800oC with molar ratios of methanol:oil of 12:1, i.e. density 0.832 g/cm3, viscosity 4.92 cst, and yield 84.1%.

Abstract

Membrane technology has been the methods in the management of clean water, one of polymer that used as membrane materials is polyethersulfone (PES). However, PES is easy to fouling because it is hydrophobic. Fouling will cause a decrease in membrane performance. In this study, PES membrane was modified using hydrophilic additives, namely an alloy of Mg(OH)2 and chitosan. This research study the effect of additives on the performance and anti-fouling properties of the membrane. The membrane preparation was carried out using polymer blending method. The dope solution was made by mixing 18% PES with additives in the form of an alloy of Mg(OH)2 and chitosan with varying compositions of 1% and 5%, with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent, and a mixture of ethanol and water as a non-solvent. The membrane characterization was evaluated by analyzing the functional groups. Membrane performance was carried out by measuring the flux and permeability of pure water, selectivity or rejection, as well as membrane anti-fouling tests. From the results of the study, the largest permeability value in PES/NMP membrane with the addition of 5% additive (membrane N5) was 12.9 L/m2.h.bar, rejection was 33.54% with good anti-fouling properties.

Abstract

Aromatherapy candles are one of the best-selling and popular products. Apart from being used as therapy by means of inhalers, it is also widely used as wedding souvenirs and souvenirs from certain areas by highlighting the distinctive aroma of that area. The Community Service Team chose an aromatherapy candle product as a product that has good business opportunities for mothers and young women in Mon Singet Hamlet, Kajhu Village, Aceh Besar District. Essential oils or essential oils used in making aromatherapy candles are lime and lemongrass, each of which has effectiveness for relaxation (anti-stress) and as a repellent or mosquito repellant. The results of the training show the enthusiasm of the participants in making aromatherapy candles with various attractive shapes and colors. In addition, the participants also understood the ingredients for making aromatherapy candles, their benefits and potential to be used as business opportunities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze development planning issues and their impact on traffic congestion on Jalan Luku and Jalan Pintu Air, Kwala Bekala Village, Medan Johor District. Kwala Bekala Village is the second largest area with the highest population density, experiencing significant traffic congestion because it functions as a connecting route for settlements and the main access to tourist attractions (the Zoo). The main problems are spatial inconsistencies such as the conversion of road shoulders into illegal parking and street vendors (PKL), unplanned and overlapping infrastructure planning, and weak institutional controls that lead to violations of regional spatial planning. Traffic density causes congestion that disrupts time efficiency and road users. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through direct observation of traffic flow movements at certain hours at the study location. Data were analyzed using SWOT to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that can formulate strategies for handling congestion. The SWOT analysis results indicate that the main weaknesses lie in road narrowing and misuse of road shoulders, while the greatest threats are the growth rate of private vehicles, which is faster than infrastructure development, and weak law enforcement. This study identifies four main strategies that must be implemented to sustainably increase traffic capacity and smoothness: (1) Accelerating improvements in road capacity and conditions, (2) Developing comfortable and integrated mass transportation, (3) Enforcing regulation of road shoulder misuse.
