Abstract

This study discusses the theological conflict arising from interpretational differences between Nusantara Ulama and Transnational Ulama in Indonesia. The researcher analyzes the paradigms and mainstream interpretations of the two Islamic typologies that have developed in Indonesia, namely Nusantara Ulama and Transnational Ulama. The author also seeks to identify points of difference and initiate an integrative effort to minimize existing tensions. Using a qualitative approach with library research as the primary reference and employing a comparative tafsir method as an analytical tool, this study also adopts the approach of ilm al-kalam (theology). The research findings indicate that the Nusantara Ulama paradigm tends to use a contextual paradigm with a mainstream interpretation of substantialist tafsir, while the Transnational Ulama uses a textual paradigm with a mainstream interpretation of scripturalist tafsir. These differences in paradigm and mainstream interpretation often lead to misunderstandings, even accusations of heresy or disbelief towards each other, despite the essential similarities in their views. To minimize ideological conflict regarding the interpretation of theological verses, the author proposes an integrative approach through convergent interpretation (tafsīr mutaqāribah). This approach represents a compromise between substantialist and scripturalist tafsir. This tafsir model offers a peaceful way to reach a mutual agreement that both sides can accept. The interpretation focuses on the core teachings of the Qur'an concerning theological verses, with consideration for maslahat (public interest), by finding common ground amidst the various interpretations. This approach requires mufassirs to socialize the meaning of theological verses to the Muslim community. Mufassirs need to re-recognize the primary purpose of the Qur'an's revelation to Prophet Muhammad, which is to bring a mission of peace, while also reconciling diverse opinions with a firm adherence to the essential theological teachings of Islam and upholding the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Abstract

This article is a study about a Malay version of the 'Abd al-Majid al-Khani al-Khalidi's al-Sa'adah al-Abadiyah, written by Syekh Mudo Tuanku 'Abd al-Qadim of Belubus, Payakumbuh, West Sumatera. The manuscript which is used as the source of this study is a copy written by 'Abd al-Jumin of Suayan from Lima Puluh Kota, West Sumatra. This article uses philological approach in addition to Sufism approach on the substance of the kitab. These approaches are used to explore the ideas of Sufism of 'Abd al-Qadim who was known as a Naqshabandiyah sufi of Minangkabau. Abstract

Research on intellectual ëgures in the archipelago has not been recorded properly. One of them is the study of Sultan Muhammad ‘Aydrus, a reformer in Buton, the author of Hadiyat al-Baṣīr fī Ma‘rifat al-Qadīr. This article describes the roles of the theological works of Muhammad ‘Aydrus within Islamic tradition in Buton. The primary source of this article is the manuscript of Hadiyat al-Baṣīr fī Ma‘rifat al-Qadīr. The article concludes that the text Hadiyat al-Baṣīr has a role in the puriëcation of Islamic theology in the Sultanate of Buton, especially trust ‘legacy’ of the reincarnated spirits of the dead. However, the concept of the puriëcation is very different when compared with the puritanical Padri movement in Minangkabau. Muhammad ‘Aydrus’ puriëcation concepts is more polite because he makes the educational process as a method. This text is one of the text used as teaching material in the educational process. === Penelitian terhadap sosok tokoh-tokoh intelektual di Nusantara belum direkam secara baik. Salah satu diantara adalah penelitian tentang Sultan Muhammad ‘Aydrus, seorang pembaharu di Buton, penulis kitab Hadiyat al-Baṣīr fī Ma‘rifat al-Qadīr. Artikel ini menjelaskan peran-peran dari karya-karya teologis Muhammad ‘Aydrus dalam tradisi keislaman di Buton. Sumber primer artikel ini adalah naskah Hadiyat al-Baṣīr fī Ma‘rifat al-Qadīr. Artikel ini menyimpulkan bahwa teks Hadiyat al-Baṣīr ini berperan mempuriëkasi teologi Islam di Kesultanan Buton, terutama kepercayaan ‘warisan’ mengenai reinkarnasi roh orang mati. Namun, puriëkasi yang dilakukan sangat berbeda dengan gerakan Paderi di Minangkabau yang terkesan puritan. Puriëkasi yang ditempuh Muhammad ‘Aydrus lebih bersifat santun karena ia menjadikan proses edukasi yang terbilang elegan sebagai sarana. Teks ini merupakan salah satu teks yang digunakan sebagai bahan ajar dalam proses edukasi tersebut.
