Abstract

Islamic insurance, known as Sharia Insurance, has become a crucial component in Indonesia's financial sector. Sharia insurance prioritizes Islamic economic principles by offering products such as takaful (collective insurance) and mudharabah (business partnership). The opportunities for the Sharia insurance industry in Indonesia are substantial, given that the Muslim population comprises 87.2% of the total population as of 2021. Additionally, the Financial Services Authority Regulation (FSAR) Number 11 of 2023, Article 15, mandates Sharia financial institutions to prioritize Sharia financial products. However, data indicates that the growth of Sharia insurance is still significantly low. As of December 31, 2022, the market share of Sharia insurance premiums is only 4.76%. In light of the above challenges and opportunities, this study aims to analyze the constraints, particularly the issue of product awareness, where many individuals still do not fully comprehend and appreciate the benefits of Sharia insurance products. Therefore, this article discusses 1) the factors influencing the lack of understanding and awareness among the public regarding the benefits of Sharia insurance products, and 2) the efforts to address this issue. This research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing a systematic literature review method for data analysis. Books and other literature relevant to the predetermined theme were systematically searched to provide insights into the challenges and potential solutions for enhancing awareness and understanding of Islamic Insuranceproducts among the public.

Abstract

The insurance sector plays a crucial economic role by helping individuals and businesses manage risks and uncertainties. By transferring some of their risks to insurance companies, individuals and companies can reduce the likelihood of bankruptcy compared to bearing the risks themselves. This role has become increasingly important in recent decades, particularly due to climate change, financial crises, and the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to greater volatility in macroeconomic indicators. Understanding these potential risks is key to ensuring the future sustainability and growth of the insurance sector in both Indonesia and ASEAN. The research objective is to examine the relationship between macroeconomic variables and insurance and claims. Using annual panel data regression analysis, we examine the relationship between macroeconomic indicators and insurance gross premiums in a sample of 63 countries from 2010 to 2019. The macroeconomic indicators used in the model are real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates. The results suggest that macroeconomic variables play a significant role in determining the performance of gross premiums and claims. Lessons learned include that real GDP, inflation, and real interest rates show a positive and significant relationship with gross premiums, while exchange rates show a negative relationship. However, the lasting impact of these macroeconomic variables on gross premiums varies from one to the other. In fact, only two variables, real GDP and inflation, have a lasting impact. The results suggest that market players should provide strong and comprehensive risk management systems to address macroeconomic turbulence. Surveillance and monitoring macroeconomic indicators are essential, especially in a macro-dependent sector.

Abstract

ASEAN is known as a region that has several comparative advantages that can attract and encourage increased FDI. Indonesia as the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship, raised the theme "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth". However, there are two fundamental problems, such as FDI restrictions in the telecommunications sector and low R&D activity which has implications for low innovative activity leading to deindustrialization in ASEAN. Thus, to answer this problem, this study will analyse the effect of FDI on innovation opportunities for manufacturing companies using the CDM model approach. Through the Heckman Selection Model and Probit methods, it was found that the presence of FDI tends to reduce R&D spending. In fact, the results of R&D spending have a positive and significant relationship to manufacturing company innovation opportunities. In addition, it was found that innovation in ASEAN was not from R&D activities, but came from foreign R&D that had been carried out in their home countries.

Abstract

Purpose ― This paper evaluates Indonesia's trade integration efforts and their impact on export competitiveness from 1989 to 2021. It examines the evolution of trade arrangements, starting with the ASEAN Preferential Trade Arrangement (APTA) and progressing to bilateral agreements. Methods ― Based on Leamer and Stern, the Constant Market Share Analysis (CMSA) measures Indonesia’s export competitiveness over the years.Findings ― The results indicate no significant improvement in competitiveness during the analysis period, with export growth primarily driven by the effect of world growth. Although competitiveness did not shift markedly over time, it remained positive overall, suggesting a buffer effect during economic crises.Implications ― The paper suggests Indonesia should pursue deeper trade integration and unilateral economic reforms. Drawing on Korea’s experience, combining export promotion policies with trade agreements could enhance market access and foster internal competitiveness.Originality ― This study provides long-term insights into Indonesia’s export competitiveness amidst global trade integration efforts and offers policy recommendations based on the success of Korea’s trade reforms.

Abstract

Abstract

The government passed Undang Undang No. 33, 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantee (UUJPH) as a mandatory halal regulation in the hope of realizing protection for Muslim consumers and to provide added value for SMEs. However, until 2019, only 1% of SMEs have been certified halal (MUI, 2021). Therefore, it is important to know the impact of halal certificates on the performance of SMEs. Researchers compared the performance of SMEs that are halal certified with SMEs that have not been halal certified using quantitative research designs with the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method. The PSM method can balance or equalize groups of research subjects with the matching method. With this method the treatment group is paired with the non-treated group based on the observed covariates. This method is used to reduce bias in the estimation of treatment exffects on observational data due to confounding factors. Propensity Score is a conditional probability of getting a certain treatment based on the observed covariates. The results of the study stated that there was a difference in performance between MSEs that were halal-certified and SMEs that were not halal-certified, but the effect of the halal certificate was not significant on the performance of SMEs
