Abstract

ABSTRACTThe rapidly developing digital media has currently been forcing every individual to become a digital citizen. Not exceptionally, students who are at the stage of adolescent development are considered active digital citizens. Research has shown that male students access social media more often than female students. However, it remained unknown how both male and female students in Indonesia develop digital citizenship. This study aims to explore differences in the ability of digital citizenship in two State Islamic High School’s (MAN) students in terms of gender. The study used a mixed method approach sampling 394 students from two madrasah in Bandung. In the quantitative phase, a survey questionnaire was distributed to the sampled students from which six groups of students were selected to participate in the qualitative phase. An FGD was conducted with each of the six groups to understand further their ability in digital citizenship.  The results showed female students’ ability in digital citizenship is higher than male. Both male and female students are strong in the aspect of digital security; but they are weak in digital wellbeing and digital civic engagement respectively. This study hopefully contributes to the curriculum development in MAN by taking into account the differences in order to create more effective digital citizens. Keyword: digital citizenship, male, female

Abstract

This article aims to explore school leadership practices in the context of the multicultural society of Indonesia. Effective school leaders in a diverse context demonstrate a type of moral leadership characterized by high awareness and sensitivity to cultural diversity and act accordingly to enable everyone in school to pursue his or her goals. This study used a qualitative case study approach by selecting three different schools and interviewing the principals, teachers, and students. The findings suggest that while in rhetoric school leaders convey a commitment to recognize and respect diversity, they exercise covertly some discriminative policies towards powerless groups. In these schools, both cultural and religious identities were used to maintain domination in school. Consequently, the schools have hardly become a venue for social justice and multicultural citizenship. By doing so, this article contributes to a better understanding of the nuance of school leadership in multicultural societies like Indonesia.

Abstract

Batam adalah kota di mana orang-orang dari banyak ragam suku/etnis dan agama hidup berdampingan. Walaupun secara umum aman dan damai, kota multikultural ini pernah mengalami konflik dan friksi antar etnis yang mengakibatkan penduduknya terpapar potensi negatif dari keragaman. Melalui disain konvergen dari pendekatan mixed-method, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi respons psikologis siswa di Batam Kepuluan Riau terhadap keragaman yang mereka alami baik di sekolah maupun di luar sekolah, dan menjelaskan bagaimana para siswa memandang keragaman tersebut. Studi kuantitatif dilakukan dengan menyebarkan angket kepada 201 siswa di dua SMA di Kota Batam (usia rerata = 15,94 tahun). Studi kualitatif dilakukan dengan menginterview sepuluh orang guru dan 2 orang kepala sekolah, serta melakukan focused group discussion (FGD) kepada 18 orang siswa. Analisis data kuantitatif menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Hasil studi kuantitatif  memperlihakan bahwa mayoritas siswa merasa puas atas kehidupannya di tengah masyarakat yang beragam Respon positif ini sejalan dengan hasil studi kualitatif. Siswa belajar membangun perasaan, pemikiran dan perilaku yang positif sekaligus kontributif terhadap keragaman di lingkungan sekolah dan masyarakat. Penelitian ini mengisyaratkan pentingnya program dan proses pemaparan bagi para siswa terhadap keragaman, baik di dalam maupun di luar sekolah.
