Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the English components that needs to be mastered by the learners, yet most of the students have big problems in mastering vocabulary. Based on the researcher’s observation during PLP, it was found that at X and XI class had lack of vocabularies. The objectives of this research were to find out i) the significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught through short movie at the first grade of SMAN 15 Bandar Lampung and ii) the type of vocabulary which improves the most. The approach of this research was quantitative. There were 30 students of the first grade chosen. Vocabulary tests were used to collect the data. The researcher used a single group pretest-posttest design. The data were also computed by using SPSS 25.0 for Windows. The result showed that the mean of students’ vocabulary score was getting higher after the teacher utilized short movie, by having the number of 77.13. In addition, the gain of the test was 0.1832. It was found out that the students got higher enhancement in mastering the words of verb. The gain for this aspect was 0.25824. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan mengenai pemahaman menyimak siswa setelah diajarkan melalui video dan yang diajarkan melalui audio, dan (2) untuk mengetahui media manakah yang lebih baik untuk meningkatkan pemahaman menyimak siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap siswa kelas satu SMP Negeri 26 Bandar Lampung. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Independent Sample t-test di SPSS 16.0. Ada perbedaan yang signifikan mengenai prestasi pemahaman menyimak antara siswa yang diajarkan melalui video dan audio. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari sign lebih kecil dari alpha (0,0260,05). Di kelas eksperimen 1 peningkatan nilai adalah 15,7 sedangkan kelas eksperimen 2 peningkatan nilai adalah 10,82. Menurut hasil data, pengajaran menyimak melalui video lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman menyimak siswa karena video dapat memberikan suasana yang lebih menyenangkan bagi siswa di kelas .The purpose of this research were: (1) to find out whether there is a significant difference of the students' listening comprehension after being taught through video and those who are taught through audio, and (2) to find out which one of those media is better to increase students' listening comprehension. This research was conducted to the first grade students of SMP Negeri 26 Bandar Lampung. The data were analyzed by using Independent Sample t-test in SPSS 16.0. There is a significant difference of the students’ listening comprehension achievement between the students who were taught through video and those who were taught through audio. It can be seen from sign smaller than alpha (0.0260.05). In experimental class 1 the increase score is 15.7 while in experimental class 2 is 10.82. From the result of the data, teaching listening through video is more effective to increase students’ listening comprehension because video can give more enjoyable listening atmosphere for students in the classroom.Keywords: audio, listening comprehension, video.

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to find out the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability and to find out what aspect of writing has the most correlation on students’ grammar mastery. This research used quantitative approach. The subject of the research was the first grade students of MAN 1 Bandar Lampung. It consisted of thirteen classes; the total number of population was 439 students. By using sample random sampling, the sample of this research was 40 students taken from twelve classes (3 and 4 students in each class). A set of the grammar test in the form of multiple choices was used to measure students’ grammar mastery and writing test was used to measure students’ writing ability. Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS 25.0 for windows was applied in this research to analyze the data. The result indicated that there was a correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their writing ability since the significant value was 0.730 resided between 0.600 - 0.800, which means the strength is high correlation. The data indicated that Sig. (2- tailed) = 0.00 which was lower than 0.05. This suggests that a student who has high scores in grammar mastery, she or he also get a good score in writing. It was assumed that language use was the aspect of writing has the most correlation on students’ grammar mastery because; it was found that during the writing test, the students showed various errors, such as using incorrect tenses and unstructured sentences. From the research findings, it can be concluded that there was a positive correlation between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability in descriptive text and language use was the aspect of writing that most correlated with grammar mastery. doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/UJET.v10.i3.202112

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to investigate the effect of the implementation of Story Completion Technique in improving students’ vocabulary achievement in learning English, and also to find out students’ participation. The research design was one group pretest and posttest. Then, the sample of this research was class VIII F of SMPN 8 Bandarlampung in academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected by using objective vocabulary test and observation sheet. The statistical result by using SPSS 16 proved that the students’ score improved significantly with the significance value was p0.005 (p=0.000). The students’ mean score is 3.93 and in the post-test mean score is 6.20. It also affected on students’ participation in the aspect of asking, they frequently asked questions. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that teaching English by using Story Completion Technique could improve  students’ vocabulary achievement.Keywords: improve, vocabulary, story completion technique

Abstract

This research employed the correlation design. This quantitative research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ reading speed and students’ reading comprehension. The subject of research was thirty five students at SMAN 10 Bandar Lampung. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading speed test and multiple choices test as the instruments. Reading speed test was used to know students’ reading speed and multiple-choice test was used to know their reading comprehension. The data from both instruments were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ reading speed and students’ reading comprehension since the significant correlation was 0.000 and the r value was 0.641.
