Abstract

This study aims at stimulating students’ criticism when reading and writing. Reading should not be passive since it needs critical thinking to understand the text. What is presented in the text describes a discourse; therefore, the students should communicate with the text to get the points. The discourse relates to context and a text is a media to cover. As the media of the discourse, text encourages students to think critically in order that they can give some comments and inputs after reading. The comments and inputs, then, are manifested in writing so it shows a complex activity which contains students’ comprehension. In other words, writing becomes an indicator to evaluate the result of the reading activities which have been completed before. Semiotics is one important thing. It presents signs and symbols providing certain meanings both explicitly and implicitly. Students create their interpretations with different views which is based on what they think. Critical thinking takes its role in observing the signs and symbols distributed elsewhere in the text. The process of making interpretation is a way to communicate with the text because they are certainly engaged when exploring ideas and connecting among information then developing into a written form. This study takes the students of Pre Advanced Reading and Writing in the third year of Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta.

Abstract

AbstractEllipsis mostly occurs in dialogues. When some elements in the dialogue are repeated, they become unnecessary information that lead to redundancy. Therefore, they need to be omitted to achieve effective writing. Nominal ellipsis is ellipsis in nominal group. The positions of modifiers are upgraded to function as Head. The modifiers replacing the position of Head in nominal ellipsis are Deictic, Numerative, and Epithet. Verbal ellipsis is ellipsis in verbal group. It can be specified into lexical and operator ellipsis. When some words are left out in verbal group, they belong to lexical ellipsis. But it is operator ellipsis when the form of be is left out. If the clause becomes the point of departure, it is divided into two parts, namely, modal element and propositional element. Clausal ellipsis is specified into modal and propositional ellipsis. When modal elements are left out, they belong to modal ellipsis. Conversely, it is propositional ellipsis if propositional elements are left out.

Abstract

This research aims at discovering the patterns of mistakes made by his students in interpreting novels’ dialogues that lead to misinterpretation. Those patterns then are modified by discourse analysis. During his experience teaching critical reading class, moreover, they were still weak to comprehend the dialogues; therefore, their comprehension went wrong. Consequently, they could not connect information among sentences which are related to each other. Accordingly, the ability to link among ideas in dialogues is badly needed for students to support their arguments in analyzing text. For that reason, the researcher offers the study of discourse analysis as one of the alternative solution. The researcher takes students of critical reading class as its research object while he uses his students’ works as his research source of the data. The students’ works contain misinterpretation through novels’ dialogues. Then, those works are documented as the data source to observe.  As this study is qualitative, the researcher turns out to be the data instrument. The researcher himself determines how the data are accomplished to observe then to interpret. They were chosen based on research purpose; that is, modifying students’ misinterpretations using discourse analysis. It was carried out in order to make the analysis can be more meaningful since the researcher himself selected the data that are possible to support the research purpose; therefore, this research uses purposeful sampling. The data shows that the students do not use discourse context in their analysis such as reference, presupposition, implicature, and inference since dialogues in the novels consist of embedded aspects which is absolutely tied with context surrounding the sentences.  To overcome those problems, therefore, the researcher provides discourse analysis involving the discourse contexts that will make analysis more accurate. Moreover, discourse analysis helps students to be more critical. Thus, their reading comprehension improves significantly because they analyze from overall views.

The result shows that South African rural teachers get the highest salary of USD2,524, followed by Colombia with USD 626,58, Azerbaijan USD 175 and Indonesia USD. 182.24. The Lowest percentage of rural student dropout in primary level isSouth Africa and Colombia (3% respectively), Junior High School level is Azerbaijan (8%) and for Senior High School is South Africa (27%). In conclusion it shows that rural teacher salary has negative impact on rural student dropout, but this impact will be more influential by support from many other factors. It is suggested that developing countries should increase rural teachers’ salary as the solution to decrease rural student dropout.

Abstract

This study explores how witnesses in Indonesian criminal courts exercise agency and resist coercive questioning through linguistic and prosodic strategies. It aims to challenge the dominant view of witnesses as passive participants by uncovering the discursive mechanisms through which they negotiate institutional power and redefine authority in talk. The research adopts a Critical Discourse Analysis framework, integrating Foucault’s notion of power/knowledge and Goffman’s concept of face-work to examine courtroom discourse as a site of interactional struggle. Data were drawn from 18 hours of cross-examination in three district courts and analyzed using AntConc and ELAN to combine corpus-assisted and prosodic perspectives. This mixed qualitative–quantitative approach enables systematic identification of resistance patterns across lexical, syntactic, and acoustic levels. The analysis reveals that witnesses resist coercive framing through assertive repair, strategic evasion, hedging, and tonal dissent. These strategies transform compliance into controlled agency, allowing witnesses to reshape meaning without overt confrontation. Resistance thus operates as a routine communicative practice that momentarily redistributes power within institutional discourse. The study contributes to Critical Discourse Analysis and forensic linguistics by integrating prosodic and corpus-based tools to investigate resistance as both linguistic and embodied. It advances understanding of agency as a relational, performative practice, and provides a framework for discourse-sensitive evaluation of witness testimony in judicial contexts.
