Abstract

This study aims to identify the best extender that can maintain the quality of swamp buffalo semen at UPTD BPTSD Tuah Sakato. This study used 1 swamp buffalo bull located at UPTD BPTSD Tuah Sakato. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 6 replications, the treatments given were differences in diluent materials including P1 (Tris Egg Yolk), P2 (Steridyl), P3 (Bioxcell), and P4 (Optixcell). The variables observed in this study included the quality of fresh semen, frozen semen, and spermatozoa kinematics. The research data were analyzed by ANOVA and DMRT further test using the IBM SPSS v.25 application. The findings of this study indicate that differences in diluent materials have a significant effect (P <0.05) on the motility and abnormality of swamp buffalo semen, but do not have a significant effect (P> 0.05) on the viability, MPU, and TAU of swamp buffalo spermatozoa. The difference in diluent materials gave a significant effect (P<0.05) on ALH of swamp buffalo sperm, but did not have a significant effect (P>0.05) on VAP, VCL, VSL, STR, LIN, and BCF of swamp buffalo sperm. Based on the results of this study, it was found that egg yolk tris is the best extender that can maintain the quality of swamp buffalo semen both in terms of frozen semen quality and spermatozoa kinematics.

Abstract

Animal pregnancy testing is one of the techniques/tools used to detect animal pregnancy. This livestock pregnancy test kit can identify early pregnancy in beef cattle, which is useful for farmers to take appropriate actions in reproductive management and cattle care. The objectives of this activity are: 1. to improve farmers' knowledge of early pregnancy detection and the cattle reproduction process to increase the birth rate of calves, 2. to enhance farmers' skills in early pregnancy detection in cattle to improve efficiency in farm operations, and 3. to disseminate early cattle pregnancy technology using pregnancy test kits to farmer groups within the campus community in Padang City. This activity was conducted in a cattle group within the campus community located in Pauh Subdistrict, Padang City. The methods of this activity included counseling, training/demonstration, and evaluation. Participants in this activity were the Taruko Sakato Farmer Group, lecturers, and students from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Andalas University. The results of this activity were that participants understood the principles of the test kit, collected necessary urine samples, and improved their skills and understanding in independently and accurately detecting animal pregnancy. The application of this cattle pregnancy test kit technology is expected to assist farmers in enhancing productivity and efficiency in cattle reproductive and production management, thereby positively impacting farmers and local food security. In conclusion, this activity provided knowledge, understanding, and practical skills to farmer groups/partners in adopting innovative technology for improving their livestock farming outcomes.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to obtain information related to the handling of frozen semen by officers at frozen semen depots in districts/cities and inseminators in West Sumatra and to determine its relationship to frozen semen quality in West Sumatra Province. The study was conducted in 11 districts/cities in West Sumatra. The objects of this study were officers and frozen semen at depot locations and AI stations in the study area. The observed variables include the distribution and handling of frozen semen by officers at depots and AI stations and the quality of frozen semen with the variables motility, viability and abnormality of sperm. The semen quality data were analyzed using simple regression analysis, while frozen semen handling data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The finding of this study indicated a significant decline in semen motility and viability (P<0.05) from provincial depots to district/city depots. However no statistically significant correlation was observed between sperm abnormalities at depot locations and semen motility, viability and abnormalities at AI stations (P>0,05). The study  revealed that three districts/cities and one AI station exhibited substandard, semen distribution practices, classified as "sufficient." category. The factors contributing to this decline include supporting facilities, frozen semen transportation, and trained personnel.  These factors are suspected to be the primary causes of the significant deterioration in semen quality from provincial depots to district/city depots.
