Abstract

This article highlights that the hajj (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca) involves not only religious devotion, but also religious tourism and its associated business, necessary to deal with massive parties of pilgrims, embracing trans-national relations, central and local governments, flight and other travel agencies, pilgrimage guidance units, catering agencies and hotels to the pilgrims themselves in its scope. The aim of this article is to analyse the politics of hajj services, which was carried out mainly through the placing of this pilgrimage under government control, leading to the assumption of its monopoly by the government during the New Order period. Although it will focus on Soeharto period, there will be some discussions on this subject during the colonial and early post-colonial periods to trace the genealogy of government control of hajj pilgrimage (and ‘umrah, known also as ‘small hajj’), especially during the New Order.  The author argues that the complexities of hajj (and ‘umrah) services were not so much caused by religious aspect but rather by political and economic motives.

Abstract

This article explores the role of interfaith relations in Indonesian society, with a particular focus on their representation in contemporary Islamic novels. While various programs have been implemented to foster interfaith harmony, the role of literature in promoting such relationships has received less attention. This study highlights the incorporation of interfaith themes within contemporary Islamic novels, where romantic storylines are intertwined with Islamic teachings. Millennials and young people, who constitute a significant portion of the readership, find enjoyment in these narratives and ideologies. The inclusion of interfaith narratives in these novels serves as a countermeasure to the popular "chick lit" genre that employs vulgar language and lacks religious nuances. Employing Ervin Goffman's theory of dramaturgy, the research focuses on the works of Habibburahman El Shirazy and Asma Nadia as representative popular Indonesian Muslim novelists. The findings reveal that Islamist novels have received positive responses from millennial readers, and the elegant delivery of interfaith values contributes to peacebuilding within the context of this generation. Overall, this study emphasizes the promotion of peace and interfaith understanding through the medium of popular Islamic novels, catering to the needs and preferences of the millennial demographic.

Abstract

This article will elaborate on the model of interpreting the Quran in Hikayat Prang Sabi. Guided by the text by Teungku Chiek Pante Kulu, the author analyses the data by Hans Georg Gadamer’s ideas about “Preunderstanding”, “Fusion of Horizons”, and “Historical Consciousness”. This research shows that Hikayat Prang Sabi has introduced a unique model of interpreting the Quran by adopting hikayat instruments in Acehnese culture. The author identifies this interpretation model in this research with Tafsir Hikayati. Tafsir Hikayati has contributed to constructing the Acehnese’s resistance to Dutch colonialism by bringing together two very influential spirits in Acehnese society: religion and culture. Through Tafsir Hikayati, Teungku Chiek Pante Kulu constructs a “Resistance Hermeneutics” by interpreting Islamic religious texts (the Quran) using the Acehnese cultural language (hikayat). Combining these two spirits has helped the Acehnese people accept and capture the message of resistance conveyed by Hikayat Prang Sabi so that it succeeded in awakening the spirit of ideological struggle against Dutch colonialism.[Artikel ini mengelaborasi model penafsiran Al-Quran dalam Hikayat Prang Sabi.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze various legal traditions working within the implementation of Islamic law after special autonomy in Aceh. Although Aceh's legal system follows the national legal system derived from civil law, diverse legal traditions still exist. The scope of this study is limited to the interaction of Aceh's legal traditions by taking the construction of juvenile and immoral criminal law and describing the social authorities who also operate the legal tradition to the parties in the case. This study presents the results using a case study model. Data obtained from interviews and documentation, analyzed using an interlegality approach. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that the dialectic of legal traditions is determined by the role of actors acting as companions for victims to ensure that the rights of victims are not neglected. The traditions of Islamic law, customary law, and laws for protecting women and children are used interchangeably. The effort to combine these three legal traditions was carried out to obtain justice and guarantee the fulfillment of the victim's civil rights, such as the right to continue education, to relieve the trauma caused by the psychological pressure. The amalgamation of legal traditions in Aceh is an effective way to achieve justice for women and children and the construction of new laws to develop a national legal system that favors the interests of victims.

Abstract

This study explores the life and contributions of Muda Waly al-Khalidi (1917–1961), a prominent Acehnese ulama who played a crucial role in shaping Islamic education, Sufi practices, and ulama politics of religious authority in Aceh. Muda Waly was instrumental in advancing the Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah (Aswaja) theological tradition and propagating the Naqshbandiyya Khalidiyya tariqa.Naqshbandiyah Khalidiyah tariqa. He founded the Darussalam Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Labuhanhaji, which became a significant center for Islamic learning in Aceh. His efforts also extended into politics through his involvement with Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah (PERTI), a traditionalist Islamic organization countering modernist influences. Using Foucault’s genealogy approach, this study examines the intellectual and religious formation of Muda Waly, tracing his educational lineage in Sumatra and Mecca, his engagement in theological debates, and his role in shaping Aceh’s religious landscape.  I argue that the legacy of Muda Waly al-Khalidi represents an intricate process of knowledge formation and power relations in Aceh’s religious landscape. His establishment of pesantren, propagation of the Naqshbandiyya Khalidiyya Sufi order, and resistance to modernist movements illustrate the genealogical development of religious authority. His contributions demonstrate how religious authoritytraditions are continuously reshaped through negotiation, appropriation, and resistance. Future studies could further explore how his epistemic legacy continues to evolve in response to emerging theological and political contestations in Indonesia.
