Abstract

The research aims at finding the cultural elements in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House in the Big Woods. This is a descriptive qualitative research. Data source of this research is Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods. The data of this research are words, phrases, clauses, sentences and conversation with cultural elements found on the data source. Technique for collecting data is documeniation. The data is classified based on the elements of culture. Technique of data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, and data verification. Theory triangulation is used for data validation. The results of the study show that the cultural elements found in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House in the Big Woods are (1) those dealing with the geographical situation such as animals, plants, and season (2) those relating to the tradition such as eating tradition (meal time, food and beverage, and way of cooking), cloth tradition such as types of clothes, medical tradition, hunting tradition, needle work, sugar snow tradition (3) those dealing with religion and folklore (4) those relating to social values such as speaking manner, eating manner, and meeting people manner.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the implementation of comparing Indonesian and English culture in EFL context and describing the students’ perception on it. This is a descriptive qualitative.  This research is applied to non-English department in English lesson. The data used in this research is the questionnaire results. To collect the data, the writer gives questionnaire to the students via Google Form. The writer uses 4 topic of cultural material such as comparing fairy tale (Bawang Merah Bawang Putih VS Cinderella), tradition (The Night of  One Suro VS Halloween), Indonesian VS English proverbs, and Food around the world (Acar/Pickle).  The students feel interest and enjoy with all materials. Even after learning those materials, they are proud of Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan Peningkatan Kemampuan Vocabulary Building melalui Objects, Material, Shapes and Colour bagi Guru TK Dukuh di Kecamatan Mojolaban Kabupaten Sukoharjo sehingga anak-anak dapat meningkatkan kosa kata bahasa Inggris sejak dini dari Guru mereka. Peserta dari pengabdian ini adalah Para Guru TK di Mojolaban, Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah Ceramah dan praktek. Hasil kegiatan adalah adanya peningkatan pemahaman vocabulary building bagi Para Ibu Guru TK di Mojolaban. Diharapkan dengan adanya pelatihan ini, Guru TK jadi lebih percaya diri dalam mengajar Vocabulary Building sehingga pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dapat disampaikan dengan metode yang tepat dan benar kepada siswa TK maka anak-anak senang dan menyukai bahasa Inggris sejak dini.

Abstract

This research focuses on the use of onomatopoeia in the Tintin comic. This study aims at describing the types of onomatopoeia in Tintin comics. This is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are onomatopoeic forms found in Tintin comic. The data sources for this research are 3 Tintin comics, namely Tintin in the Tibet, Tintin and the Alph-Art, and Tintin and Picaros. To collect the data, the writers use documentation (Tintin comic) and content analysis. Data analysis in this study consists of three stages such as data reduction, data display, and conclusion. There are 51 data of onomatopoeia. The writers find there are 3 types of onomatopoeia; phonomime onomatopoeia (29), phenomime onomatopoeia (12), and psychomime onomatopoeia (10).

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic seems to give us blessing disguise to the size of English vocabulary, one of which is blends. This study aims at describing the types and meanings of English blends found during the Covid-19 pandemic by using blends classification from Mattiello’s theory i.e. morphotatic as well as morphological and graphic. This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative study. The research data are English blends found in 9 articles on websites. The data collection techniques used in this research are documentation and content analysis. Technic of data analysis is carried out in three stages, namely (1) data reduction which is carried out when there are same data, (2) data display which is presented in table, (3) drawing conclusions. The researchers found 49 data of English blends. Morphotactically, the researchers found 11 total blends (with 2 blends forming processes) and 38 partial blends (with 3 blends forming processes). Morphologically and graphically, the researchers found 7 overlapping blends and 42 non-overlapping blends.
