Abstract

Hajj is a hard worship for the Moslems because it requires three abilities at the same time: physical ability, mental ability, and financial ability. Consequently, not all people are able to perform the hajj. Furthermore, hajj is a very long process of worship and, therefore, has given birth to numerous traditions from the departure until the arrival from the holy land. In line with the phenomena of hajj, especially in the context of Gresik East Java Indonesia, this study strives to explore how the tradition of hajj is performed. By using qualitative method, this research found some important findings. First, there are various traditions conducted by people of Gresik in terms of performing hajj: pamitan haji, sejarah haji, walimatussafar, dulkadiran, nuzulan, khatmil Qur’an, and tasyakuran. These traditions are performed because they are considered important especially for those who will embark on their hajj journey. Second, from the socio-economic perspective, the performance of hajj traditions can result in social discrepancy for the lower middle-class people. The implication is that for the people of Gresik who have only been able to aff ord the cost of the hajj journey, then the cost of the hajj traditions can be a peculiar morale burden because the cost of the hajj traditions is equal to the personal cost of the hajj journey.

Abstract

Abstract

The discussion of the implementation process of social empowerment, which is based on religious belief and critical analysis of social problems, is an interesting discourse. Various faith-based organizations, including pesantren in Indonesia, attempt to contribute to social empowerment to contextualize religious teachings within social life. This research used the qualitative method to describe and analyze the empowerment process, the obstacles during the process, and how religious values and critical analysis affect the empowerment process within pesantren and community. This study resulted in three main points. First, it showed that the stages of empowerment begin with raising critical awareness, analyzing social problems, identifying resources, and building community-based social institutions. Second, it also identified the main principle of empowerment, i.e., democratic, participatory, and community-need-based empowerment programs. Third, it indicated that community participation plays a role as the subject and pesantren as a facilitator of social empowerment.

Abstract

Pondok Pesantren is an islamic boarding school that has recently obtained big attention because it is associated with radicalism and terrorism; even to some people the institution is regarded as fertile ground to sow the seeds of such violence. Although some other people strongly argue that the accusation is totally wrong, the negative stigma could not disappear easily. Using qualitative approach, this writing describes the peace culture in al- Islam Gumuk, a pesantren in Solo which most people are “fear” of. The results show that despite potential to conflict, this pondok pesantren still sow the culture of peace, such as tolerance, equality, justice, freedom, and individual rights.
