Abstract

Background: One over many ways to treat dental caries is by restoration.Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is the restorations material that bonds physically and chemically to tooth structure. GIC has been developed by combining the conventional material with monomer resin, known as resin  modified GIC (RMGIC). Presently, with the development of nano  technology, RMGIC restoration also available in the form of nano   particles, called nanofilled RMGIC (RMGICn). One disadvantage of GIC is the marginal gap which may affects the durability ofrestoration. Purpose: The purpose of this study to compare the marginal gap width of RMGIC and nanofilled RMGIC.Methods: This study used scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observing and measuring the marginal gap width in two kelompoks of 9 maxillary first premolar teeth. The first kelompok restored with RMGIC, the second kelompok restored with nanofilled RMGIC. Following immersion in artificial saliva and the teeth were thermocycled at a temperature of 5oC, 37oC, and 55oC (250 cycles) 1 minute each. Data analysis was done using independent t-test with 95% confidence interval (α = 0.05).Results: Statistical test showed a significant difference for marginal gap width in both kelompok (p = 0.000).Conclusion: There is marginal gap in RMGIC and RMGICn restoration. RMGIC restoration presented lower marginal gap width than RMGIC.

Abstract

Dental and oral health, especially for children, is often considered a trivial matter. In fact, a healthy oral cavity condition at an early age will support the health of the oral cavity as an adult. The high rate of tooth decay in children should be a concern for parents, teachers and medical personnel. When complex dental and oral abnormalities occur in children, medical treatment causes trauma to their psychological condition, so it is much easier to prevent tooth decay through efforts to improve dental and oral health from an early age. Based on the results of dental and oral screening conducted on kindergarten children in Mergosono, Malang, it was found that the def-t score in children aged 4 years old is in the criteria of high (4,5), 5 years old is very high (7,7) and 6 years old is very high (6,8). The cause of the high incidence of dental caries in kindergarten children is the lack of knowledge about oral health, which can be concluded from the wrong behavior or way of brushing their teeth and the right knowledge about when to brush their teeth. Efforts that can be made to improve this behavior are education which is included in promotive and preventive efforts.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a common oral health problem in children and can affect quality of life, growth, and development. Suboptimal dental hygiene habits and limited knowledge of dental care increase the risk of caries from an early age, so sustainable promotive and preventive efforts are needed. This community service activity aims to increase children’s awareness of their oral health and to improve it through education and topical fluoride application at TPQ Darussalam in Malang City. The program was implemented in two activity periods (2024-2025) through stages of coordination with partners, interactive counseling using visual media and toothbrush demonstrations, clinical examination of caries status using DMF-T index, and topical fluoride application by a team of lecturers and dental students. A total of 40 students participated in the 2025 activity. Evaluation was carried out by comparing the results of the DMF-T examination in 2025 with the previous year’s activity data. The examination results showed that the average DMF-T index decreased from 1.69 (2024) to 1.00 (2025), accompanied by increased participation in caries prevention measures. This activity shows that repeated education and community-based topical fluoride interventions are associated with improvements in children’s oral health indicators and can be a model for dental health services in religious education settings
