Abstract

The use of Big Five Personality taxonomy in research about personality day by day keeps increasing. In Indonesia, the Big Five personality Inventory (BFI) is utilized to predict consump¬tive behaviors, entrepreneurship interest, consumers’ satisfaction and organizational commitment. The inventory used in such research is varied with names of both Big Five and Five Factor Model, consisting of 44 aitems, 50 aitems, 100 aitems, or even 300 aitems. This research aims to adapt linguistically and culturally the aitems of BFI of Oliver John’s 44 aitems version. Two steps of research will be reported in this article, namely Adaptation of BFI into Indonesian and Testing of Indonesian version of BFI. The subjects of this research are 961 people with diverse range of age, education and place of origin. The results of the step 1 are presented in the form of a description of language and cultural adaptation processes. The validity of every dimension of BFI will be calculated by correlating the score of each aitem with the total score, whereas the reliability is achieved through conducting Alpha Cronbach test. A factor analysis of the data obtained is also done to find out the amount of the Indonesian-version BFI factors. Keywords: Big Five Inventory, cultural translation, language, personality traits

Abstract

Do the emphaty determine the smoking behavior? And is the smoking behavior in the public areas, such as in the train station, in the cinema, in the cafetaria, in the car park, and on the bus affected by the low of empathy.? One hundred and fifty students, 15-22 years old participated in this study. They were asked to fill the Emphaty Scales (SE) and Smoking Behavior Scales (SPM) in when they were smoking in the public area. The Product Moment analysis showed that there is a negative correlation (-0,207) between the two. The higher the emphatetic the lower the smoking behavior, especially in the public areas. This research also found out that the frequency of smoking is related to the empathy. Therefore, people who smoke in the public areas should be the hard smokers. Keywords: Emphaty, Smoking Behavior, Public Area.

Abstract

Paperless Office or PLO was created to facilitate work demands, which strongly requires speed, accuracy and also relates with issues concerning paper use reduction in several organizations in theworld. In the Faculty of Psychology UGM, PLO has already been used since 2009. Has this particular technology actually fulfilled the aforementioned expectations above? If it has, then whattypes of issues are well discussed through this system? Are there issues that are difficult to discuss using this system? Why is that so? This study aims to describe use of PLO systems among staffs inthe Faculty of Psychology UGM. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied in the study. Quantitative method was conducted using descriptive technique towards the PLO database followed by the categorization of the users, discussed topics that support daily office work, as well as the completeness and order of topics that are discussed. Following the categorization of users, datacollection was further carried out by interviewing faculty members to explore reasons for not using the system. Other issues that are to be studied include the fluent exchange of information for each ofthe discussed topics based from the categorization process. Content analysis is performed towards the data obtained from this interview. The results of the analysis demonstrate that PLO usage reaches84%. Topics most interestingly discussed concern social topics, for example news of an ill member, birth of a baby, and promotion. The topic least responded to, related with academic careeropportunities. The percentage of PLO usage provides a description related to the cultural issues that hold importance in innovation diffusion in office work.

Abstract

This paper discusses and criticizes a Technology Acceptance Model which was developed by Fred D. Davis in 1986. TAM was built to predict the way people accept and adopt the technology. TAM was inspired by theory of reasoned action (TRA) formulated by Martin Fishbein & Icek Ajzen in 1975, although the model does not completely adopt the TRA model. TAM does not include Subjective Norm as a factor in predicting the use of technology. As a theory, TAM has been used by many researchers to investigate the adoption of information technology. This model has a significant contribution in predicting the use of information communication technology (ICT) in many areas. Since ICT users have various motivational backgrounds, some of them have a positive attitude toward ICT, but they do not use ICT. It seems the TAM model need to be improved by including Subjective Norms and Perceived Behavior Control as suggested by Ajzen in the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as antecedents of intention to use ICT. Since the personality background of ICT users may also influence the use of ICT, the author proposes TAM‐NR‐2007 model that include personality traits as a background factor of attitude toward the behavior and subjective norms.

Abstract

One of theories to which researcher aiming to test people’s attitudes and behaviors always refer isthe Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). It has been developed from the Theory of Reasoned Action(TRA) as a response to criticism about the inconsistent relationship between attitude and behavior. To overcome this weakness, antecedent behaviors are developed in more specific way both in termsof concept and measurement. This paper aims to provide a description of how to set the aitems ofmeasuring instruments based on the TPB. Some notes about the way of presenting the measuringinstruments and the stages are depicted in the end of this paper.
