<![CDATA[The centre for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM-CENSIS), based as The State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, continues to develop research programs that contribute to strengthening both the scientific tradition as well as community development in Indonesia. One of our current research programs, undertaken in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, focuses on the issue of good governance in Indonesia. Targeting the Muslim community, this project entails a combination of research, education and publications. The crux of the project ascertaining is to what extent Islam and the Muslim community in general support or reject the relative values of good governance such as democracy, tranparency, participation and accountability.DOI:Â 10.15408/sdi.v8i3.686]]>

<![CDATA[The diversification of religious authority in Indonesia reflects not only the variety of Islamic orientation of religious communities in Indonesia but also shows the inability of the old religious authority to respond the increasing problems that the Indonesian Muslims communities have to deal with. Radical Muslims including Imam Samudra clearly does not show any respect to scholars/ulama such as the NU ulama, because, to him, they are unable to properly respond the suffering of the Muslims community in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. To him, the only authoritative ulama, whom Muslims should follow, are the ulama in the frontier (ulama mujahid).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i1.580]]>

<![CDATA[PPIM UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, assisted by PUSKADIA-BUMA UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta has conducted a three year project (2004-2007) of mainstreaming pesantrens and madrasahs in Indonesia. The project initiative and execution were the result of cooperation between UIN Jakarta and the Royal Danish Embassy The project was intended to introduce contemporary, democratic civic values (democracy, civil society, religious pluralism, human rights, and gender equality) into pesantrens and madrasahs and to their leaders, and to initiate participatory and accountable management within these schools. The program was designed to eventually create an atmosphere in which the worldviews of Islamic educational institutions could change and adapt to the diversity and complexity of the modern world.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i3.553]]>

However, as it developed, besides remaining as an institute for propagating missionary works, IAIN has also played an increasingly bigger role as an academic institution in the arena of Islamic higher education. <![CDATA[This document explains about the transformation from IAIN (Institut Agama Islam Negeri, State Institute for Islamic Studies) into UIN which has many significant consequences. First, academically; while in IAIN only Islamic Studies (such as theology, Islamic jurisprudence and exegesis) are developed, in UIN the scope of studies broadens to include 'secular' sciences. Second, while most of students of IAIN are mainly from madrasah/pesantren/rural communities. <![CDATA[Dating from the establishment of the early Islamic kingdoms, Islam has been practiced in Indonesia for at least seven centuries. Through a gradual and continuous process, Islam has found its way into the hearts of the majority of Indonesians. This success is mainly due to the institutions that have been involved in studying and socializing Islam, including those newly established institutions such as IAIN (State Institute for Islamic Studies). Mosques and pesantren are of course the old institutions whose significant contribution to the development of Islam and the Muslim community are beyond doubt. Madrasah, which function in a similar manner to mosques and pesantren, are also important institutions, particularly in bridging the gap between Islam and modernity. But it is only at IAIN that a higher level and more sophisticated study of Islam is conducted in Indonesia.
