Abstract

This article will explore the intellectual journey of Snouck Hurgonje as a hired scholar for the colonial agenda. His life in Mecca and then the Indies, his knowledge on Islam and the Muslims as revealed in the works he produced, and the way it was transformed into the colonial policies, are the main subjects of the discussion. The way Snouck Hurgronje dealt with Muslims on his tour of duty, for example by collaborating with the penghulu, and working together with the Arab, Said Oesman, will also be explored. It should be stated that, in line with Snouck Hurgonje’s advice, the Dutch policy on Islam was directed (among other things) to draw the native elite --in this particular case the penghulu-- into the colonial orbit.[Artikel ini membahas perjalanan intelektual Snouck Hurgonje, seorang ilmuwan yang bekerja di bawah dan untuk kepentingan colonial Belanda di Indonesia. Kehidupannya di Mekah, kemudian kembali lagi ke Indonesia, pengetahuannya tentang agama dan orang Islam yang tertuang dalam kerya-karyanya, serta proses pengetahuan itu semua dalam mempengaruhi kebijakan pemerintah kolonial menjadi tema utama diskusi dalam tulisan ini. Selain itu, akan dibahas pula cara-cara Snouck Hurgonje dalam berhubungan dengan orang-orang Islam selama menjalani tugasnya, misalnya ketika bekerjasama dengan para penghulu atau ketika bekerjasama dengan tokoh Arab, Said Oesman. Perlu ditegaskan pula bahwa sejalan dengan saran-saran Snouck Hurgonje, kebijakan pemerintah kolonial Belanda tentang Islam antara lain lebih ditujukan untuk menarik kalangan elit pribumi, dalam hal ini adalah para penghulu, ke lingkaran pemerintah kolonial.]

Abstract

Taking pre-colonial period as the subject of study, this article argues that Islam is part of Malay culture and politics. Islam strongly engaged in the formation of Malay kingdoms, mingled with maritime commerce, and contributed to the formulation of Malay ideas of power and political management. Yet, it should be noted that the important role of Islam is to be explained by the fact that the religion gave emphasis to the idea of omnipotent ruler (raja), as was expressed in the Islamized language of politics, such as khalifa (vicegerent) and zill Allah fi al-alam (the shadow of Allah on earth). It was the ruler, with Islamic honorific titles and attributes, which appeared as the most determinant actor in the statecraft of kingdoms. Being as such, Islam could not be conceived of as an evaluation for rulers’ political conduct. Instead, Islam served as a religious justification for the rise of the absolutist kingdom of the archipelago, which culminated in the kingdom of Aceh in the seventeenth century.The ruler had paramount position over the subjects (rakyat) and the economic elites (orang kaya). [Artikel ini menjelaskan bahwa pada periode pra-kolonial, Islam merupakan bagian dari kebudayaan dan politik Melayu. Islam sangat berpengaruh dalam struktur kerajaan Melayu, campur tangan perdagangan laut, dan berperan dalam pembentukan konsep kekuasaan kerajaan Melayu dan manajemen politiknya. Tetapi perlu digarisbawahi bahwa peran penting Islam secara faktual adalah agama memberikan penekanan pada konsep raja yang dalam bahasa Islam politik disebut dengan khalifa dan zill Allah fi al-alam (wakil Tuhan di bumi). Sang raja, sebagaimana gelar dalam Islam, merupakan tokoh yang paling berkuasa dalam pemerintahan sebuah kerajaan. Sebagaimana yang terjadi, Islam tidak dapat diterima begitu saja sebagai koreksi terhadap perilaku politik sang raja. Alih – alih Islam justru menjadi justifikasi agama untuk kekuasaan mutlak raja, dimana puncaknya terjadi pada Kerajaan Aceh abad 17. Raja mempunyai kedudukan paling atas melampaui rakyat dan kaum borjuis.]

Abstract

These two texts, al-Mawahib and Taj us-Salatin, further had similarities in terms of both language and their substances. In this paper, al-Mawahib will be discussed in its relation to Taj us-Salatin. But before we come to the discussion, the author will pay attention to several texts which preceded al-Mawahib in creating the initial discourse on Islamic politics. As the author will show below, both al-Mawahib and Taj us-Salatin contributed to shaping Islamic political ideas in the land below the wind, that is, what are now referred to as Indonesia and Malaysia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v13i1.575

Abstract

This paper is a review of the book M.C. Ricklefs,The Seen and Unseen Worlds in Java: History, Literature and Islam in the Court of Pakubuwana II 1726-1749, (Honolulu: Asian Studies Association of Australian in association with Allen & Unwin and University of Hawaii Press, 1998).As for as the Indonesian studies are concerned,  Java has become the most various points of view, concerning the javanese society and culture. Abstract

A. C. S. Peacock and Annabel Teh Gallop, eds. 2015. From Anatolia to Aceh: Ottomans, Turks, and Southeast Asia. Oxford: The British Academy by Oxford University Press.This book comprises of some articles with the major contribution to investigating further the relation between the Ottoman in Istanbul and Muslim kingdoms in Southeast Asia. Using the archival sources from the Ottoman period, those articles highlight new information on the Ottoman-Southeast Asia network, which has been rather neglected from any scholarly studies. Especially in relation with the Acehnese kingdom, the discussions of this book demonstrate that Aceh was the only Southeast Asian Islamic kingdom which made serious efforts to make relation with the Ottoman. Issues related to politics, commerce, and military aids constituted the main substance in the relation they established in the sixteenth century, which then continued in the seventeenth century in the form of intellectual and religious network. The period of the nineteenth century witnessed the re-emergence of the political issue in Aceh-Ottoman relation, as Aceh looked for Ottoman protection to face the Dutch military invasion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i2.3259

Abstract

Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) of State University Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, in cooperation with Center for the Study of Society and Culture (PMB) of Indonesian’s Science Foundation (LIPI), and Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), held a conference on “Redefining the Roles of Islamic Organizations in the Reformasi Era. ”The conference was divided into two sessions. In the first session we have Prof. Dr. Bahtiar Effendy, Dr. Hendro Prasetyo, and Drs. Anas Ahmadi, MA. In the second session we have Dr. Endang Turmudi from Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) and Dr. Abdul Mu’ti from Muhammadiyah.The seminar was designed to evaluate and discuss the roles of socio-religious organizations in Indonesia. The current understanding on the roles of socio religious organizations was being challenged and questioned. The seminar discussed the relationship between the state and the roles of these religious organizations during the Reformasi Era. These were among the important issues because transformation of ideas and movements have occurred within Islamic organizations in Indonesia.Since the beginning of the twentieth century, socio-religious organizations have played important roles in Indonesia’s nation building. Muhammadiyah, NU, and Persis are among the organizations which have contributed significantly to the development of Islam in Indonesia. They have been the driving forces for community development such as in education, socio-political, economy, and health. Most of the madrasah and pesantren across Indonesia were founded by these organizations.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v17i2.466

Abstract

This article tries to portray the development of religious orientation in schools through a thorough investigation of the emergence of ROHIS in senior high schools and perusing its dynamics. After having been introduced in the mid-1980s, ROHIS has attracted many people. In the beginning it merely supported religious activities in schools, but gradually its importance became undeniable. Its significant contributions in endowing students with additional religious knowledge made ROHIS a well-recognized organization amongst students and teachers.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v17i1.470

Abstract

This report is based on two surveys, a baseline and an impact one, conducted by the PPIM in the framework of gauging the impact of the Islam and Development Program of The Asia Foundation in Jakarta. The first (baseline) survey was carried out in July 2008, just before the program started, while the second one was made after the program had ended in August 2009.Designed to measure the impact of the program, there were two categories of survey respondents: program participants (500 in each survey), who were randomly selected from the list of the names of those who participated in the program. They were interviewed before (July 2008) and after having attended the program (August 2009). As a control group, another 500 respondents were also interviewed in each survey. They had been randomly selected from the Muslim population all over Java.The questions posed during the surveys were related to the contents of the program, and were intended to illicit respondents’ views on such contemporary issues as civic values, democracy, socio-political and religious tolerance, pluralism, gender equity, and Islamism. Muslim responses to these ideas were analyzed in a comparative perspective between the baseline and impact surveys, and between program participants and non-participants. With this perspective, the survey was directed to discover the extent to which the program was able to contribute to the strengthening of the contemporary ideas mentioned above and of democracy in Indonesian socio-political spheres.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v17i1.472
