Abstract

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the tensile properties of lignocellulosic composites; which is specifically compare the tensile properties of composites derived from natural fibers (jute, sisal and hemp) to a medium density fiber (MDF). The study was conducted experimentally by performing tensile tests according to BS EN ISO 527-2 using a MTS machine. Five specimens were prepared for each composite laminate. The results show that the tensile properties of lignocellulosic composites derived from natural fibers are superior to medium density fiber. The tensile strength of medium density fiber is 17.1 MPa; while sisal, jute and hemp fiber composite has the value of 40.25 MPa, 37.25 MPa and 31.37 MPa, respectively. Further, medium density fiber has the elastic modulus of 2603 MPa; while jute, sisal and hemp fiber composite has the values of 4592 MPa, 3643 MPa and 3048 MPa, respectively. Natural fiber composites also possess higher Poisson’s ratio which is greater than 0.36, while medium density fiber has the value of 0.25. Abstract

Fiber reinforced plastics composites are particularly valued for their high tensile strength. Other mechanical properties, especially compressive strength is often overlooked during the characterization process. In fact, the comparatively low compression strength of some composite reduces their promising application. This paper presents the experimental investigation on the compressive strength of epoxy polymer composites reinforced by natural fibers of sisal, jute, hemp and bamboo grown in tropical area. The natural fiber composites were prepared using vacuum bagging method and the fibers were treated with alkali treatment prior to further processing. The results showed that the average values of compressive strength obtained in this work ranged from 31.69 MPa to 86.64 MPa. Those results indicate that the obtained compressive strength of natural fibers composites investigated in this research were comparable to the results of previous work, which ranged from from 16.75 MPa to 108.07 MPa.

Abstract

This paper presents a statistical aspect of experimental study on the in-plane shear behaviour of hybrid composite sandwich panel with intermediate layer. The study was aimed at providing information of how significant the contribution of intermediate layer to the in-plane shear behaviour of new developed sandwich panel. The investigation was designed as a single factor experimental design and the results were throughly analysed with statistics software; Minitab 15. The panels were tested by applying a tensile force along the diagonal of the test frame simulating pure shear using a 100 kN MTS servo-hydraulic UTM. The result shows that the incorporation of intermediate layer has sinificantly enhanced the in-plane shear behaviour of hybrid composite sandwich panel. The statistical analysis shows that the value of F0 is much higher than the value of Ftable, which has a meaning that the improvement provided by the incorporation of intermediate layer is statistically significant.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberi penciri wilayah yang kuat pada sajian makanan di pasar kuliner tradisional Tempos, Lombok Barat yang memiliki nilai kesehatan bagi pengunjung dan lingkungan serta mengapresiasi keunikan wilayah dan selera kekinian. Berdasarkan kusioner yang disebarkan pada pada tahap awal diketahui bahwa tren kuliner favorit adalah nasi atau lontong sebanyak 42%, soto, bakso, mie ayam dan sejenisnya sebanyak 21%, jajanan tradisional sebanyak 17%. jajanan kekinian sebanyak 18% dan buah segar hanya sebanyak 2%. Berdasarkan hasil ini, maka dipilih dua jenis sajian yaitu menggunakan piring tanah liat beralas daun pisang dan papper bowl. Karena tahap yang dilalui maka pengabdian ini disebut sebagai pengabdian dengan metode Asset Based Community Development (ABCD): Metode ini fokus pada kekuatan, potensi, dan aset yang dimiliki masyarakat untuk membangun lingkungannya sendiri, bukan hanya pada masalah yang ada. Hasil dari kegiatan ini lahirnya design sajian di atas piring tanah liat dengan beralaskan daun pisang dan kemasan paper bowl. Dapat dikatakan bahwa program ini berhasil, karena pedagang yang menerima design dan pengunjung salaku pembeli menyatakan kepuasan yang tinggi. Pada masa depan sangat disaarankan adar dilakukan kegitan sejenis untuk makanan favorit ke dua yaitu soto, bakso, mie ayam dan sejenisnya.
