Abstract

CO2 is a greenhouse gas that receive more attention than the other gases because the properties of carbon easily deformed and diffuseed. Changes in the concentration of CO2 in the water will impact on changes in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere that affect sea surface temperatures. It continuously will result in a change of marine capture fisheries. Payung Island is one of the important areas in South Sumatra that acts as the provider of the fishery. This because Payung Island is located in the mouth of Musi and Telang River covered by mangrove, has a very important ecological function. However, the condition of the carbon in the waters of the Payung Island has not explored further. This elementary study is to determine status on Payung Island waters as a sink or source of CO2. The study was conducted in June until August 2015. The research stages include surface water sampling, measurement of the CO2 in the atmosphere, the analysis of the concentration of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) calculation.  Atmospheric CO2 were measured insitu, while the DIC and TA were analyzed using titration methods. Partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) obtained from the calculation using the software CO2Calc using data of  DIC, TA, nutrients and atmospheric CO2. The results showed that the content of DIC and TA on the Payung Island waters has similar distribution pattern  i.e. high in areas close to the river, and getting lower in the area which were closer to the sea. The comparisons between pCO2 atmosphere and pCO2 waters showed that Payung Island waters generally act as a carbon sink in area towards the sea but however, in the territorial waters adjacent to the river as a source of carbon.  Keywords: carbon, marine protected area, Payung Island waters

Abstract

Heavy metal was a pollutant because its stable and difficult to disentangle. Heavy metals in the waters of Banyuasin’s estuaries alleged negative impact on crabs and other aquatic animals. To see the impact research on the analysis of heavy metal content in the crab (Scylla serrata), in the territorial waters of Banyuasin’s estuaries. The objective of this study was to determine the content of heavy metals (Pb, Cu and Fe) in the crab meat (Scylla serrata) in the territorial waters of Banyuasin’s estuaries. Completely randomized design was used with 3 stations treatment and each station was repeated 3 times. Parameters observed were lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe).The results showed that the content of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) were different at each station. The highest content of lead (Pb) was on SI 0.0073 ppm and the highest content of copper (Cu) was on S-III 0.3713 ppm. The result indicates that still safe the crab (Scylla serrata) to consume based on national standards Pb 0,5 mg/kg and Cu 20 mg/kg . Iron content exceeds the standards set by the Department of Health in S-II at 2.054 ppm. Results of analysis of the iron content (Fe) on crab meat in consumption should be limited according to the established standards 2 mg/kg.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service activity was designed to address the economic challenges faced by fishermen in Sungsang II Village, Banyuasin II Regency, South Sumatra Province. Fishermen are often disrupted by weather conditions, such as the west monsoon or rainy season, which limit fishing activities and negatively impact their income. This program involved 48 fishermen and two partners, intending to increase the knowledge and creativity of the participants regarding alternative fisheries. The presentation covered aquaculture knowledge and the various organisms involved in it. In-depth explanations were also provided on silvofishery and aquaponics methods as alternatives to enhance income. Additionally, this activity highlighted potential local organisms that could serve as cultivation species. The program was carried out in several stages: preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The evaluation was conducted to assess the success of the dissemination based on participants’ enthusiasm and the increase in knowledge gained. The results indicated that the program successfully achieved its intended objectives, evidenced by the participants' enthusiasm and a 45% increase in their understanding. However, the skepticism of some participants and limited capital for cultivation posed challenges to the dissemination process. The community's interest in and understanding of the introduced cultivation methods form the basis for the future, particularly focusing on silvofishery and aquaponics techniques. Recommendations for applying these cultivation methods will be formulated as follow-up steps to ensure the sustainability and positive impact of this initiative. Through this approach, it is hoped that the community can attain greater economic stability and enhanced environmental sustainability.
