Abstract

The researcher's experience of studying chanoyu for one year at Urasenke Kyoto became a stimulus to compare Chanoyu tea serving ceremony and tea serving ceremony in Yogyakarta Palace. Up to this time, the tea serving ceremony in Yogyakarta Palace has never been opened to the public, unlike the worldwide Chanoyu tea serving ceremony, a particular school has even been opened to study chanoyu. With this phenomenon, researchers are interested in examining further to compare the two tea serving ceremonies. The method used is descriptive qualitative with literature study, field observation, and interview. The results show that tea used in chanoyu was called powdered matcha, while in Yogyakarta Palace it was 2 Tang powder tea. The utensil in chanoyu is free to choose according to the guests and the season. At the same time, in Yogyakarta palace, it has become the rule and only for families in Yogyakarta Palace. The philosophical meaning of chanoyu is related to the harmony seen in the interaction between participants, as well as between utensil and seasons, while tea serving in Yogyakarta Palace begins with the service of Abdi Dalem to his king. Both of them have similarities in the presentation that must follow the patent rules.

Abstract

In building interpersonal relationships through omotenashi no kokoro (Excellent Service), Keigo is a crucial aspect to consider when communicating in Japanese. Keigo, both in terms of grammar and its usage concept, is quite complicated. Therefore, the role of instructors in delivering Keigo learning materials is expected to motivate students to improve their communication skills while mastering the art of creating interpersonal connections. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is chosen as the teaching method. This research aims to provide an alternative teaching experience focusing on omotenashi no kokoro. The research method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The research subjects are students of the Japanese Language Program at Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta (UTY) taking the hospitality course. The research is conducted through observation by analyzing CLT-based learning activities using three steps: mechanical practice, meaningful practice, and communicative practice. The study results indicate that with the CLT method, students can use Keigo through word or phrase repetition, understand the meaning of words and expressions in sentences, and freely actualize themselves through improvisation and exploration of conversational contexts. A new finding from this research is that the CLT teaching method is effective when applied to the hospitality course, emphasizing building interpersonal relationships through omotenashi no kokoro.

Abstract

Along with answering the challenges of the tourism industry, which is increasingly intensifying with information technology, this study seeks to convey omotenashi knowledge using information technology in the form of digital applications. This application was developed using the R&D method and the ADDIE learning model, combining thinking skills, ethics, and activities. This type of digital application approach uses a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The purpose of this study is to create an application that provides information about 1) Knowledge of the philosophical values contained in chanoyu; 2) Knowledge of the equipment used; 3) Knowledge of the process of serving tea; 4) Knowledge of cha kaiseki (Japanese table manners); 5) Knowledge of how to deal with guests in good Japanese style. Through the interfaces of the omotenashi application, Japanese and tourism learners will more easily understand the chanoyu philosophy and the stages of the procedure that usually require a teacher in every move. With this application, the problem can be solved by following these standards, students can practice independently to get omotenashi scores and apply them in life.
