Abstract

Background: The high prevalence, complexity and negative impacts of angular cheilitis are affecting the patient quality of life indicates the importance of the disease caring and treating. Collecting data is required to identifying the disease frequency in a population as an early step attempted to planing, preventing, caring, and healing the disease. Objective: to determine the incidence rate of angular cheilitis at Dental Hospital of Jember University on October-December 2015, and the distribution based on age, sex, nutritional status, and residece. Method: This observasional descriptive study used cross sectional survey design. The study was conducted by identifying sample with angular cheilitis patient were found on October-December 2015 at Dental Hospital of Jember University. Result and conclusions: The incidence rate is 6,7%. The distribution based on age, sex, nutritional status and residence are most common in children 5-11 (89,2%), male (62,5%), malnutrition status (52%) and rural (59%), so that the rate is estimate the risk factor of angular cheilitis increase in children, male, malnutrition and villagers.  Keywords: Angular Cheilitis, Distribution, Incidence

Abstract

The high prevalence of oral candidiasis needs special attention. Candida albicans (C. albicans) play a critical role in the progression of deeper oral candidiasis. An effective and safe strategy to control C. albicans activity was needed. The essential oil from siam orange peel has been shown to have antifungal properties. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentration of the essential oils of siam orange peel to inhibit the growth of C. albicans. This is experimental laboratory research with a posttest-only control group design. The water stream was used to get essential oil extract from siam orange peel and made in several concentrations 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The disk diffusion method was applied to determine the inhibition of essential oil extract of siam orange peel to the C. albicans. Nystatin and DMSO 10% plus tween 80 0,5% were used as positive and negative control groups. The results found that the essential oil extract of siam orange peel concentration of 50% and above showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of C. albicans with the most optimal is 75%. The essential oil extract of Siam Orange Peel would be useful as a therapeutic agent to control oral candidiasis.

Abstract

Candida albicans is normal flora found in the oral mucosa in healthy individuals but has opportunistic pathogenic properties. The change in the oral cavity's environmental conditions can cause C. albicans to turn into a pathogen and cause oral candidiasis. Antifungal drugs that are common used for the treatment of oral candidiasis are topical nystatin preparations. Nystatin is an antifungal drug from the polyene group produced by Streptomyces noursei, which is thought to be very effective in treating diseases caused by C. albicans with a success rate 79.6 - 87.5%. The previous study showed that watermelon peel extract contains active compounds of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The active compound is known to have antifungal activity. The study aimed to determine the ability of watermelon peel extract to inhibit the growth of C. albicans. The type of research conducted is experimental laboratories using the post-test only control group design. The observations in this study about the inhibitory power of watermelon rind extract (Citrullus lanatus) on the growth of C. albicans showed that there were inhibitory zones of watermelon skin extract on the growth of C. albicans.

Abstract

Background: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a disorder characterized by recurring ulcers confined to the oral mucosa with no other signs of disease. RAS is classified according to three classification, there are RAS minor, RAS mayor, and RAS herpetisformis. RAS prevalence of general population ranges from 5%-66%. Purpose: This study aimed to obtain the prevalence and distribution of patients suffering from RAS in Oral Medicine Departement of Dental Hospital, Dentistry Faculty, University of Jember in 2014. Method: This study used descriptive study with retrospective approach and purposive sampling. The population of this study is all patients of Oral Medicine Departement of Dental Hospital, Dentistry Faculty, University of Jember in 2014 as many as 1073 peoples. Result and Conclution: The result showed that 146 patients suffer SAR (14%) from 1037 patients in Oral Medicine Departement of Dental Hospital, Dentistry Faculty, University of Jember on January until December 2014. There were 97% of patients had RAS minor, 3% of patients had RAS mayor, and 0% of patients had RAS herpetisformis from 146 patients with RAS. RAS can occur in women or men and children or adults, the result of this research showed that RAS was most common in women, that was 70% and the age groups of 12-24 years was 54%. Abstract

Candidiasis is an infection caused by overgrowth of Candida species in the oral cavity dominated by C. albicans. One way to inhibit the growth of the fungi is by utilizing medical plants that contain antifungal compounds. Cocoa leaves is a plants that has antifungal compounds such as caffeine, flavonoids and alkaloids. The aim of study was analyzing the effect of cocoa leaf extract on the growth of C. albicans and determining the optimal concentration of cocoa leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of C. albicans. The study used macerated cocoa leaf extract. The inhibitive testing method conducted by disc diffusion method. The concentrations of cocoa leaf extract were 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, and nystatin was used as positive control and aquadest was negative control. All were possed on the disc and further incubated for 24 hours. The inhibition effect was measured by a caliper. Cocoa leaf extract can inhibit the growth of C. albicans, and the largest co-concentration in inhibiting C. albicans was 100%.
