Abstract

This article investigates the existence of Wattpad as a cyber-platform to produce literary works through socio-cultural paradigm. By adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, the discussion is intended to further elaborate whether such a story-sharing website – firstly launched in 2006 – has some typical natures as the field of literary production. The objective of this study is to explore how currently the influence of technological reformation is toward the practice of literary production. Eventually, from the exploration conducted to Wattpad, it is found that there are some typical characteristics that bring consideration to see it as a field of literary production. However, those characteristics must be seen contextually for it is conditioned in cyber space, yet the logic of conventional practice is carried over into it.

Abstract

This article contains a study on Yogyakarta literary agents’ strategies in producing a translated work from Indonesian into English (Indonesian-English literary work) entitled “Pilgrimage in the Land of Java”. Due to the development of literary studies based on the practice of its agents, this study aims to understand more the pattern and vision of agents in producing translated literary work in a particular context. In this case, the agents are a poet Iman Budhi Santosa, an indie publisher Interlude, and a translator Chrysogonus Siddha Malilang. This study adopts the Bourdieusian concept of strategy in cultural production as the framework of thought. Meanwhile, interview and document selection are two primary techniques to collect data for this qualitative research. This study reveals the strategies implemented by the three primary agents during the production of “Pilgrimage in the Land of Java”. Although running on the same track, it turns out that each of them had specific strategies based on the role that they possessed during the production. This study also discloses the significance of social capital in translation practice.

Abstract

This study investigates a novel entitled Northern Lights (1995), authored by Philip Pullman as a fantasy fiction in the context of popular literature. The aim of this study is to reveal the significance of children and myth characters as the formula and the intrinsic formulation of this novel as an adventure story. As a textual study, this study uses a narrative analysis method that can help to explore the intrinsic elements of prose fiction. The relevant data collected and analyzed in this study are narrations or dialogues that refer to particular acts and speech of characters, settings of place, theme, and plot in the novel. All data are analyzed to disclose the conception of children and myths used as the basic formula of this novel. At the end of the analysis, the investigation reveals the significance of children and myth characters in this novel. They are seemingly used to attract readers’ interest and concern in transcending their imagination boundaries in their daily lives. Besides, this study can also explicate how they are intrinsically formulated in an adventure story.

Abstract

The translation Funding Program (TFP) was initiated concerning the Indonesian government agenda to be the guest of honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) 2015. As a result, it produced many Indonesian-English literary translations, particularly the two from Yogyakarta. By applying the Bourdieusian approach to cultural production, this study is arranged to unravel the government’s motive and literary taste behind the execution of that program, especially through the production of two literary works, “Pilgrimage in the Land of Java” and “Jatisaba.” This study is directed to figure out the importance of Indonesian-English translation for Indonesian literature and the criteria of literary works to be involved in such a government program. Therefore, the government’s motive and literary taste behind the TFP can be elaborated further. There are two primary techniques for the data collection in this research; 1. Digital library research is utilized to access relevant information about TFP, and 2. Interview the writers to get information about their experience participating in TFP. All collected data are synchronized in the analysis to explain the binding knot among the literary translation production, TFP, and FBF. As a result,the study reveals that there were some motives behind the production of literary translation through the TFP. Those motives were also related to the literary taste influenced by international demand.

Abstract

The curriculum in schools is always changing. There are new advancements that are being made and new components being incorporated into the curriculum. Culture and identity have become a rising issue in some schools nowadays and it has slowly begun to show its importance to the curriculum. Hence, it also has become a rich source of investigation which inseparable in the field of English Language Teaching. With this background, this study investigates the representation of culture-related contents embodied in Indonesian middle school English electronic textbook 2013 curriculum. The present study explores how culture is preserved and disseminated in the textbooks. It is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data were taken from Electronic English Textbook for VII grade entitled “When English Rings a Bell” (2014) by Kemdikbud RI, are in the form of written texts and illustrations that may accompany the reading passages. The five dimensions of culture were adopted in this study proposed by Moran (2001) which cover the products, practices, perspectives, persons and communities. The result shows that Indonesia cultural aspect chosen selectively to be included in this national textbook to enhance both teachers’ and students’ awareness for the interdependent relationship between language and culture.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme dan kompetensi guru Bahasa Inggris tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) di Kota Bandar Lampung dalam pemanfaatan teknologi Artificial Intelligence (AI), khususnya aplikasi Suno AI, sebagai media pembelajaran inovatif. Melalui pelatihan intensif yang melibatkan 89 orang guru, kegiatan ini memperkenalkan konsep literasi digital dan penerapan Suno AI untuk menciptakan materi audio dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi ceramah, demonstrasi, praktik langsung, dan diskusi reflektif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman dan keterampilan guru dalam menggunakan Suno AI, ditandai dengan kemampuan menghasilkan konten audio kreatif yang relevan untuk kegiatan listening, pronunciation, dan vocabulary enrichment. Kegiatan ini berkontribusi dalam mempersiapkan guru untuk menghadapi tantangan pembelajaran abad ke-21 melalui integrasi teknologi AI secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

This article investigates the practice of literary production in the digital age, characterized by the spirit of using internet-based technological innovation, mainly social media. In this context, Indonesian literary writers often use social media platforms, especially Wattpad (a story-sharing website), to produce their literary works. Nevertheless, such a condition has not dampened the circulation of literary works in printed (conventional) form. Even though in one side they use Wattpad to publish their works, but in the other side they still follow publication system through conventional publishers. Accordingly, this particular study aims to examine the influence of technological advancement to literary production culture. Therefore, through a sociocultural approach and qualitative methods, this study is designed to observe how far the advancement of social media technology can stimulate specific behavior of literary writers in their creative process and presenting their works to the public. As a result, through exploration and analysis, it is found that social media technology could encourage digital literary production at a certain point. However, this cannot entirely make literary agents turn away from more conventional printing technology. It further reveals the strategy of literary writers with popular genre to deal with the doxa in the of Indonesian literary field. This social condition remarks the quasi-digital society.
