Abstract

Mangalahat Horbo adalah tradisi tua milik suku Batak Toba yang merupakan perayaan kurban kerbau kepada Mula Jadi Na Bolon (pencipta segala sesuatu). Urgensi penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai atau makna yang terkandung dalam ragam sastra lisan (umpasa) upacara Mangalahat Horbo Batak Toba. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif-deskriptif. Pendekatan kualitatif yang dilakukan yaitu dengan teknik dokumentasi (analisis teks sastra lisan Mangalahat Horbo terhadap video upacara tersebut), wawancara langsung dan observasi. Sastra lisan dalam bentuk umpasa pada upacara tradisi ini memiliki makna yang sarat akan nilai-nilai bagi kehidupan, antara lain bernilai religi, budaya dan sosial. Kata Kunci: Mangalahat Horbo, Tradisi

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the use of the manual dictionary and electronic dictionary in learning and daily activity by the students in the University of Serambi Mekkah, Banda Aceh. This study used descriptive qualitative method for the data collection. The population in this study were the students at the University of Serambi Mekkah and the sample used in this study was 30 English major students in the University of Serambi Mekkah. The researcher used a questionnaire and interview in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used percentage formula. The result of the study showed that 63% of students often used the manual dictionary, 96% of students often used the electronic dictionary. Meanwhile, the students majoring at English department in the University of Serambi Mekkah commented about the benefit of using the dictionary was that it could help adding the vocabulary and made the learning process easier.

Abstract

The language that is used in teaching influences the success of teaching and learning process. When the medium used by teachers in teaching and learning process is not effective; thus, it makes the students get problem in learning English, including in learning reading skill. The aim of the study is to find out if the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the common way, and to find out how the students respond toward English as the medium of instruction during learning reading. This study is conducted by using one group pre-test and post-test design. The total population of this study was 60 students in the second grade (class VIII1 and class VIII2). While the sample of this study is students who are taken from class VIII1. The researcher used purposive sampling technique in choosing sample. The data were collected through test and questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by using t-test and percentage. The result of t-test calculation shows that t-test (8.34) is higher than the critical value of t-test for the degree freedom of 29, which is 1.70 at the level of significance 0.05. It means that the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the conventional language instruction. Based on the result of the study, the English teachers are suggested to use English as the medium of language instruction in teaching the students’ reading skill because it can increase the students' ability in mastering reading skill.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dimulai dari banyaknya idiom yang ditulis pada mobil truk di sepanjang jalan Wage Rudolf Supratman Rantau Prapat.  Idiom yang ada pada mobil truk ditulis berdasarkan isi hati, pikiran dan apa yang mereka rasakkan. Mengandung makna yang tersembunyi, dan bisa berubah berdasarkan seseorang yang menerimanya. Melalui penelitian ini, penulis mengkaji makna idiom, kemunculan idiom, dan perubahan makna pada idiom yang ditulis pada mobil truk di spanjang jalan Wage Rudolf Supratman Rantau Prapat. Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan mengumpulkan bukti berupa dokumentasi dan wawancara. Melalui penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa  terdapat beberapa makna yang terkandung pada idiom yang ditulis pada mobil truk di sepanjang jalan Wage Rudolf Supratman Rantau Prapat, yaitu makna sempit makna luas, makna referensial, makna konseptual, makna kognitif, makna gramatikal, makna intensi, makna ekstensi, makna kiasan. Idiom yang ditulis pada mobil truk di sepanjang jalan Wage Rudolf Supratman Rantau Prapat muncul beerdasarkan sebagian dari seluruh tanggapan, penyebutan berdasarkan sifat yang menonjol, berdasarkan asosiasi, berdasarkan tempat asal. Mengalami perubahan makna akibat tanggapan pemakai bahasa dan akibat asosiasi.Kata kunci: makna, idiom, kemunculan idiom
