Abstract

Written ages ago, insights from the Fathers of the Church have shed light upon the way of doing theology from generation to generation until today. Their contribution is long-lived and such is also true in the case of St. Justin Martyr. His pivotal idea of logos spermatikos, developed to cross and connect the then seemingly unbridgeable systems—Greek philosophy and Christianity—proves to be valuable to this day. A rereading of his thought can be fruitful for constructing a way of doing theology that is open to the world, for the key concept of this apologetic father invites one to do theology not from one’s small enclosed world, but from the perspective of a dialogue; hence the related metaphors are encounter, connectedness, and conversation. Contemporary theologians whose concern is to keep creating a more dialogical theology may benefit from Justin Martyr’s exploration of logos. His legacy helps theologians today obtain a new vision. In this way, reading the Church Fathers is not so much of a study on some irrelevant fossils as a leap towards an ever-better future of doing theology.

Abstract

Through the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church asserts the import of religious liberty for every individual and believes that one is entitled to live out one’s faith. Thus, through Dignitatis Humanae, the Church has revealed her intention to create inter-religion dialogues and to encourage respect for the positive values of different religions. This raises a question as to whether such dialogues and respect as voiced in Dignitatis Humanae are applicable when it comes to the issue of atheism, a pressing issue faced by the Church today. This article explores the engagement of such document with atheism. Since atheism covers various views coming from a number of authors, this current article focuses only on the atheism as promoted by Richard Dawkins. Building his atheism upon science, Dawkins’ views are worthy of our attention in today’s world, which is characterised by unending scientific revolutions.

Abstract

Marking the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the author wishes to present a reading of the Council as a theological event through the thoughts of Bernard Lonergan. The objective of the research is to discover how Lonergan’s insights on ways to better grasp the truth can shed light on some novelty and its implications to the reading of the Council. Making use of hermeneutics and descriptive analytics, the author argues that the Council –when read as a theological event– will show a process of dialectic, one of the eight functional specialties proposed by Lonergan. These famous functional specialties reflect the four distinct levels of consciousness in which humans operate. Dialectic, as the fourth functional specialty, is an integral part of being Church today, especially now as we are moving together in a synodal process.

Abstract

This article explores the interconnection between the phenomenon of migration and ecclesiology by analyzing the thoughts of Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) and Peter C. Phan (1943- …). Utilizing qualitative method and literature study, this research seeks to elucidate how Lonergan’s idea of historical consciousness and Phan’s theological-ecclesiological reflection upon the Church could bring about a fresh understanding of the Church which is more hospitable and hence more inclusive. This is certainly not an easy task as the Church has undergone a lot of dynamics. Looking back at the history of this more-than-two-thousand-year-old institution, one will find that it is indeed a history laden with accounts of migrations. Consequently, while Phan’s project of doing a theological reflection on migration can pave the way towards a more hospitable Church, Lonergan’s proposal to resort to historical consciousness may serve as the key element in ecclesiology.

Abstract

The inquiry into the understanding of dogmas has been prompted by historical consciousness. Dogmas were traditionally viewed as universal and a-historical until historical consciousness emerged, leading to the questioning of their truth claims. Some attempted to rely on common sense, but this proved futile. To provide a more nuanced solution to the issue of determining the truth claims of dogma, the author introduces the ideas of Yves Congar and Bernard Lonergan. Through the method of dialectic, this study aims to explore Congar's concept of living tradition and Lonergan's distinction between the permanence and historicity of dogma. This investigation seeks to resolve the tension between what is permanent and what is historical, which primarily arises from different levels of consciousness.

Abstract

Henri de Lubac was one of the many theologians who have brought new dynamics in theology through his interpretation of the theology and the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. This paper wants to explore his contributions to the methods of theologizing in the church. De Lubac’s interpretation of the relation between the natural and the supernatural supports the movement “Nouvelle Théologie” that appreciates the mysterious aspects of God as understood through the Christian Scriptures and traditions. According to de Lubac’s interpretations of Thomas Aquinas, the seeds of the supernatural are already present in the natural within the human beings. The author argues that hermeneutics and correlation are two important methods that underlie de Lubac’s ideas in putting the Scriptures as the main source of the theology insofar as the Scriptures are linked with human experience and reality. The return to theology is the return to the Scriptures and tradition, but this is always in relation to the human experiences and the contemporary world situations. Key Words:*Neo-scholasticism, *Nouvelle Théologie, *The natural, *The supernatural, *Ressourcement, *Nature, *Potency, *Grace, *Anagogy, *Experience, *Tradition, *Hermeneutics, *Correlation.

Abstract

Ecclesiology might have put the center of its gravity on the modern rationality. As a result, this kind of ecclesiology might overlook the mystical yet beautiful side of the church, which seem to have a more unifying character to the already divided church. This article wants to explore with Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theology of aesthetics the origin and the characteristics of the church from the people around Jesus, the event of the cross, the form of revelation, the Eucharist, the sacrament, and the way of love. This sort of an ecclesial aesthetics is one of the different ways of apprehending the church. This way might contribute to the traditional understanding of the church that has been characterized with modern logical concepts. Balthasar is offering the way of apprehending the church through the pulchrum toward the more unifying engagement with the mystery of God, the revelation of God through Jesus Christ. Keywords:*Ecclesiology, *rationality, *beauty, *mystical theology, *form of revelation, *the way of love, *ecclesial aesthetics, *bonumet verum

Abstract

It has been said that the advance of human reflectivity is a menace to orthodoxy. Some brilliant philosophical ideas have been accused of threatening the teachings of religious institutions. That might be the reason why some thinkers were condemned or even punished by religious institutions. In truth, however, human reflectivity is not always a threat. It, instead, can be a torchlight: it can help reformulate traditional teaching afresh and anew. And this can apply to the thoughts  of Martin Heidegger. His investigation of the meaning of Being can be deployed to help shed new light to the way Christians understand the revelation. Understanding truth as aletheia, that is, Being that is revealing itself continuously, paves the path to understand God who is unceasingly revealing Godself. Revelation takes place at an ontological level. Revelation is something that besieges human inevitably. Human should not simply linger within the humdrum banalities of daily business, but instead, should be courageous to penetrate into their authenticity to hear the real whispers of God. KeyWords:*Watchman State, *das Geviert, *otentisitas, *aletheia, *wahyu, *bahasa, *Sang Ada, *degodization, *Eigentlichkeit, *Interrelatedness, *'YangLain’

Abstract

Abstract

Religion continues to exist despite the various attacks directed to its various elements. The secularisation thesis does not apply to the contemporary world, wherein religion proves itself to be an institution that always finds a place through the endless changes in human civilisation that  has witnessed a growing number of violence in the name of particular religious values. Heidegger’s ideas could serve as tools to unravel this pandemonium. His philosophy makes head or tail of the religion’s features that have gone awry due to the lack of mystical elements. Heidegger proposes a fresh way of understanding religion through his reflection on the significance of dwelling poetically. Drawing inspiration from Hölderlin, he reflects upon the importance of poiesis, that is, an understanding on how human beings should live out religion so that it could always be relevant and enlightening.
