Abstract

Abstract

Sulawesi is one of Indonesia's large islands with a high vulnerability to earthquakes due to its geographical location, which lies between the confluence of tectonic plates and several active faults. The earthquake events' intensity was relatively high with small to large magnitudes. One area recently hit by a large earthquake that caused material losses and casualties was found in Mamuju. Given this condition, it is essential to determine the latest seismicity mitigation in the Mamuju area and its surroundings to look at the distribution of the mainshock based on the magnitude and depth of the earthquake. Earthquakes that occur in a particular area and for a certain period can describe the concentration of earthquake activity. The earthquake data activity used in this study is to find earthquake data for the period 1960-2021, followed by a declustering process which is carried out to separate the mainshock from the aftershocks. Separating the mainshock from the aftershocks is performed using the time window and distance windows criteria. Based on the analysis, it was found that the number of mainshocks that occurred in the Mamuju region was 20.11% of the total earthquake events that occurred (5366 earthquake event data) with a dominance of moderate to large magnitude (4<M<6). Meanwhile, based on the depth of the earthquake, 54.19% of the earthquake event were shallow earthquakes (0 km < D < 60 km). This can be used as a basis for updating existing earthquake maps and for paying attention to the application of earthquake-resistant building regulations and building construction permits in the Mamuju area, considering that the vulnerability to earthquakes in this area is relatively high.

Abstract

Concrete material innovation is one of the most used in construction nowadays. Along with the infrastructure growth, the amount of waste increases, such as glass waste. The glass waste contains silica and can be used as filler in the concrete mixture. This study aimed to determine the influence of added glass powder as filler on high-strength concrete. This research method was a laboratory experiment testing high-strength concrete to seek optimum characteristics of high-strength concrete based on the glass powder composition added. The optimum concrete characteristics consist of compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity for five samples with different material compositions shown in Table 3, and each sample comprised 6 (six) specimens tested. This study found that the second sample achieved the optimum compressive strength of concrete with 47.07 MPa, more significant than the compressive strength design (fcr) of 45 MPa. The optimum tensile strength produced 3.91 MPa or 8.3%, which correlated to the compressive strength of the BSK2 sample. Similarly, the optimum modulus of elasticity was then computed based on laboratory compressive strength tests referring to SNI 2847:2019 and the ASTM C-469-94, resulting in 33271.7 MPa dan 36164.95 MPa, respectively. In contrast, the modulus elasticity calculated based on the weight volume of concrete referring to SNI 2847:2019 has reached the highest elasticity modulus on the first sample with 34384.8 MPa.

Abstract

Waste refers to leftover material generated from production processes, industrial activities, or other human activities, often considered discarded due to its lack of economic value. Coconut shell waste is one such material that has not been optimally utilized, and it often accumulates without adequate disposal. However, coconut shell ash, which contains silica, can potentially enhance the compressive strength of paving blocks. This study investigates the effect of coconut shell ash substitution on the compressive strength, wear resistance, and water absorption of paving blocks. The tests were conducted in accordance with SNI-03-0691-1996 standards, including compressive strength, wear resistance, and water absorption tests. Coconut shell ash was substituted at percentages of 5.5%, 7.5%, 9.5%, 11.5%, and 13.5% by weight of cement. The paving blocks were tested at 28 days. The mixture used a 1:3 ratio of cement to sand, with the sand comprising equal parts Merapi and Progo River sand to balance their different grain characteristics—Merapi sand being angular and sharp, and Progo River sand being fine and round. The compressive strength, wear resistance, and water absorption of normal paving blocks were found to be 36.925 MPa, 0.085 mm/min, and 2.132%, respectively. The highest optimal performance was achieved at 9.5% coconut shell ash substitution, yielding a compressive strength of 40.450 MPa, wear resistance of 0.086 mm/min, and water absorption of 2.349%, meeting the quality category A standard for roads.

Abstract

Concrete is a key material in Indonesia’s infrastructure development, with growing interest in sustainable alternatives to natural aggregates. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of high-strength concrete incorporating bauxite sand as a partial replacement for fine aggregate. The control mix (BMT-0) was designed with a water–cement ratio of 0.3 and a cement content of 550 kg/m³, using natural sand and crushed coarse aggregate, without any chemical admixtures. Four additional mixes (BMT-1 to BMT-4) included bauxite sand at replacement levels of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% by weight of fine aggregate. A total of 30 specimens were tested to assess compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. All mixes exceeded the minimum compressive strength requirement for high-strength concrete (41.4 MPa). The mix with 5% bauxite sand replacement (BMT-2) demonstrated the highest compressive strength (49.33 MPa) and tensile strength (3.46 MPa), while the 7.5% mix (BMT-3) achieved the highest modulus of elasticity (38,877.32 MPa). The results suggest that partial replacement of fine aggregate with 5% bauxite sand enhances concrete quality without compromising mechanical performance.

Abstract

This paper delves into the structural response of irregular buildings, specifically focusing on the influence of geometry and shear wall configurations. Irregular buildings, with their intricate geometries and diverse structural elements, present unique design challenges, necessitating a thorough performance evaluation. Our study conducts a comparative analysis to gauge the impact of various geometric layouts and shear wall arrangements on structural behavior under seismic loading. A nine-story irregular building in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is a compelling case study. We develop three models (M1, M2, and M3), each incorporating variations in geometry and shear wall configurations (T-shaped, L-shaped, and I-shaped). These models are rigorously analyzed using ETABS software to evaluate key structural responses, including lateral displacement, inter-story drift, and base shear forces. The results reveal that M3 exhibits the lowest base shear, at 24,961.46 kN, 7.582% lower than the existing model (M1). The lowest lateral displacements and inter-story drifts are observed in the x-direction for M2 (26.308 mm displacement, 10.061 mm drift) and in the y-direction for M3 (26.115 mm displacement, 9.339 mm drift). Additionally, the lowest drift ratio occurs on the first floor of M3, measuring 0.110% in the x-direction and 0.115% in the y-direction. These findings underscore the substantial impact of geometric variations and shear wall configurations on the structural response, providing valuable insights into optimizing irregular building designs to enhance seismic performance.
