Abstract

This study aims to find out relationship maintenance in couples who get married at an early age. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach, using the Relationship Maintenante theory which discusses 6 aspects, namely, positivity, openness, certainty, social networking, and task sharing. Relationship maintenance is used to keep the relationship harmonious, happy, and lasting throughout the relationship. It was found that the decision to get married at a young age was caused by various factors, including arranged marriage from parents, economic conditions, education, and desires from oneself. The results of the study show that good communication, openness, and honesty are the keys to maintaining a harmonious relationship. Couples who marry at an early age also show a positive attitude and support each other in facing challenges, and rely on physical touch to relieve tension. In addition, support from social networks plays an important role, although couples tend to choose to solve problems independently. The division of duties in the household occurs naturally, based on the abilities of each couple. These findings emphasize the importance of effective communication and emotional support in building strong and harmonious relationships among couples who marry at a young age.

Abstract

Early marriage in Indonesia, especially in areas with strong traditions, for example in Madura, is a complex and urgent social problem. According to the latest data from UNICEF, Indonesia is ranked fourth in the world in terms of early marriage cases. Family communication between parents and children is an important aspect in decision-making related to early marriage. Madurese society, known for its strong cultural and religious values, often relies on advice and guidance from religious figures in various aspects of life including marriage. This study aims to explore the role of religious figures in family communication related to early marriage decision-making in Madura. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, which allows researchers to understand the experiences and views of informants in depth. The results of this study indicate that Madurese society respects religious figures, especially kiai as role models. The role of religious figures as social spiritual legitimacy, family communication mediators and emotional motivational support is very significant in family communication in early marriage decision-making in Madura.

Abstract

This study examines how Madurese women utilize culturally ingrained communication methods to achieve empowerment through community-based ecotourism in Sumenep Regency, East Java. The research employed a qualitative ethnographic case study based on the Fiji Vanua Research Framework (FVRF), engaging 15 women entrepreneurs through participant observation, focus group discussions, and Talanoa-style interviews tailored to Madurese cultural conventions. The results indicate that informal social settings—such as pengajian (religious study groups), arisan (rotating savings groups), and cangkrukan (casual gatherings)—function as reliable platforms for discourse, identity negotiation, and communal learning. Instead of challenging patriarchal standards, women recontextualize traditional values such as bhuppa', bhabbu', guru, and rato to validate their economic and civic participation. These communication tactics promote social visibility, reciprocal support, and incremental changes in gender dynamics. The study underscores the significance of culturally rooted empowerment communication in traditional societies and enhances participatory development theory by highlighting localised, non-confrontational avenues for women's agency.
