Abstract

Gender representation is one of the most prominent subjects of discussion in American society. Fairy tales as one of the first cultural products consumed by the American society are a medium with an influential presence in the issue. They provide gender representations and convey the idea of masculine and feminine- myths of how to be men and women. However, in 20th century, many movies are changing the perspective by presenting women and action and break the traditional myth. In the same year, a movie entitled Snow White and the Huntsman appears as the remake of the written fairy tale Snow White in the form of an action-adventure movie. To move the discussion further, this research examines how the idea of women as victims of violence in the movie is maintained. A number of disciplines in the forms of theory and approach are used to analyze the data. It also applies gender theories and Barthes's semiotic theory in answering the research question. As a result, it is found that the character Snow White and a number of other women characters still become victims of violence. The representations are also still associated with the traditional ideas of women.

Abstract

Developing the observation of the intensity of students' engagement with digital texts, which tend to increase significantly during the pandemic Covid-19, this research raises questions on the cognitive poetics process and experiences in readers' engagement with digital fiction. Of such phenomenon, this research applies cognitive poetics, which refers to the appreciation of the texts experiencing artistic enjoyment and creativity. In the context of digital fiction, this research assumes that readers experience mental immersion and create some forms of transportation. Subsequently, this research studies the readers' immersion in narratives and identifies forms of transportation as a conceptual metaphor projected to different media. This research applies qualitative content analysis to the data obtained from a survey posted on social media. Data are analyzed based on the trend and generalized to identify the causal relationship between the act of reading, the sensory immersion, and the forms of transportation. Adopting cognitive psychology theory, this research argues that readers' immersion process in digital fiction is not holistic and stable. Instead, it is a situation creating different forms and intensities. The result shows that digital text variations and the freedom of expression provide a space for readers to project the conceptual metaphor into various forms of transportation, which can be supportive and persuasive.

In analyzing the data, the research applies segmented assimilation by Portez and Zhou to answer the research questions. The result, assimilation impacts second-generation Batak-American immigrants’ perspective about Batak gender norms where they adapt more to the American Egalitarian gender norms and American Egalitarian family structure because of the human capitals that they have.

Abstract

This study discusses adolescents’ perceptions of ICT-facilitated sexual violence (ICTFSV) based on gender and school type. The research was conducted by surveying 719 students in seven regencies/cities in Surakarta, Indonesia, which were purposively selected. The ICTFSV indicator was measured based on the theories of Henry & Powell (2016) and Baumgartner et al. (2010). Mann-Whitney U and two-sided tests were employed to analyze the data. This study finds the different perceptions of ICTFSV based on gender at SHS and VHS. Moreover, it also finds the different perceptions of ICTFSV among students of SHS and VHS. This provides a new understanding of gender-perspective integration and character-building in developing school policies. Therefore, further research on gender equality and character-building of education policy can be carried out. The analyzed object imposes many limitations, namely the selected sample, the research focus, the data collecting, and analyzing method.
