Abstract

This study deals with social class in British society in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.  The objectives of this study were to find out the impacts of social class toward british society based on the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen and to describe  social class reflected toward british society in that novel. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were dialogues and narration in Pride and Prejudice novel. The analysis of this study was based on Marxist’s concept (1995:25). The findings of this study were (1) two impacts of social class toward british society found in Pride and Prejudice novel, they were pride and prejudice (2) three types of social classes which were reflected, such as power, wealth, and status.

Abstract

English for Spesific purposes is one of  the  topicthat  hold  a  great  deal  of  advantages  for  students  in Literature program. It aims to give a chance to the students to feel the working environment and see how it will be when they want to get involve into the bussiness. The variety jobs have been offered to youngsters but the most current opportunity is on line bussiness. It opens a wide range of chance for  students to achieve. In order to do so, students should master some skills, not only pedagogic skills but also marketing skills. This research tries to answer the question of how to acquire ESP students’ skillsof online marketing using mixed method, consist of qualitative, quantitative into a mixed method research approaches. The population is the senior students who are going to do field observations in several offices, consists of 30 students of english literature department program. The results show that; (1) Mixed Methods has a significat impact on the acquisition of ESP students’ skills ofon line marketing, (2) online marketing is still a prosperous bussiness for the future. Further it is suggested to do more research on this area to enrich the knowledge of online bussiness as one of the new option of profession for students of english literature department program in FBS Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct the oral tradition in Pantun of Langkat Malay traditional wedding ceremony by using Sibarani’s theory. Oral Tradition itself is text, co-text, and context tradition. The method used in this paper was descriptive and qualitative. For collecting the data the researcher became an instrument by doing observation and unstructured interview. Analysis technique used which were transcribing, reading, comprehending, investigating, describing, and explaining. The findings of text showed theme in Pantun that uttered by telangkai contained gratitude, honor, tradition, persuasion, joke, hoping a kindness, signifying a peace, welcoming guest, enthusiastic, teasing which briefly supported by co-text and context. Co-text described paralinguistic, kinetic, proxemic, and material elements. Some context applied as follow; cultural context, social context, context of situation, and culturalcontext.

Abstract

This research investigates social media as the assessment for EFL students at State University of Medan (UNIMED) of second semester English educational program. This research focuses on how social media influences the students’ competences in writing skills. The problems are how it influences their ability to develop their ideas in writing; develop the reading & writing materials; change the students’ opinion on social media in writing class. Questionnaire was designed to get the students’ thought on social media matter, their intention of social media for study, particularly in reading and writing topic and the influence of social media on their ability in developing the idea in writing class. The instruments used in this research were social media as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram as a text in reading & writing class. The population consisted of 80 students from two classes of English educational program. Data was analyzed using Research & Development Method (R&D) and the Linkert Scale to get the percentage of students’ perception. The findings of this paper indicate that students more enjoy and engage in writing class using social media as their assessments; using social media to develop ideas on a topic; and being more creative in writing skills. However, control and development are still needed on this topic.

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of Guiding Questions Technique on Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text. The objective of the study is to find out whether the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text taught by guiding questions technique is higher than that taught by using word webbing technique.. This study was conducted by using experimental design. The population of the study was the students of grade VIII of SMPN 35 Medan in the academic year 2015/2016, where there were 6 classes of VIII and there were two classes were selected as the sample by applying random sampling. The sample was divided into two groups. The Experimental group (VIII 1) was taught by applying Guiding Questions Technique, while the control group (VIII  2) was taught by applying Word Webbing Technique. The data of the study were obtained from the students’ score of writing test. To determine the reliability of the test, the writer used Pearson Product Moment formula. Based on the calculation, the coefficient of reliability of the test was 0.85. It showed that the test was reliable and the reliability was very high. There were two data used in this study. They were pre-test and post-test. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showed that t-observed (3.698) was higher than t-table (2.712) (t-observed ˃ t-table) at the level of significance of α = 0.05 and at the degree of freedom (df) = 38. The result of this study showed that students’ achievement taught by using Guiding Questions Technique is higher than that taught by using Word Webbing Technique or in other words the hypothesis is accepted.
