Abstract

Communication is something that to share their feeling, opinion, information, and etc to other people. In communication, they can use some variations of language when they talk to other people. That is what is called as style. Style can occur in written spoken and discourse. The style that occurs in spoken discourse is called speech style. The research is conducted to know type speech style and rhetorical strategies of Joko Widodo in APEC CEO Summit 2014. The objectives of this research are: (1) describing the type of speech style used by Joko Widodo in his speech in APEC CEO Summit 2014 and (2) analyzing rhetorical strategies in Joko Widodo speech in APEC CEO Summit 2014. The approach of the research is qualitative. Essentially, the research is descriptive qualitative. The data of the research is documentation of Joko Widodo’s speech in APEC CEO Summit 2014. Analyze data technique used by researcher is descriptively and analytically: surveys and fact – finding enquiries of different kinds and analyze these to make a critical evaluation of the material. The results of the research show: (1) the types of: formal style (45.2 %), consultative style (46.6 %), and casual style (8.2%). the highest type used by Joko Widodo is consultative style and (2) in rhetorical strategies  used by Joko Widodo using three types modes persuasion. The types of: Ethos (35.6 %), pathos (15 %), and logos (49.4%). The highest type used by Joko Widodo is Logos. Joko Widodo mostly using consultative style and logos in his speech because he is mostly doing semi – formal acrtivity than formal activity

Abstract

Legal translation is the transferring the meaning from source language text into target language which not only consists of language system but also legal system. This research aims to analyze the translation  techniques  used  by  the  Indonesian  sworn  translators  in  translating  legal  texts  from English into Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data obtained through content analysis on translations of the Indonesian sworn translators containing Certificate of Live Birth, Certificate of Marriage, Principles Statement of Terms and Conditions. The result of the research reveals: a) single translation technique dominates the translation technique in translating legal and law scientific texts from English into Indonesian obtains (66,67%) data consisting  of 10 variants (literal, amplification, recognized, reduction, borrowing, modulation, transposition, adaptation, colque, and description); b) couplet translation technique (32,%) data consisting of 16 variants (literal and borrowing, literal and recognized equivalent, literal and reduction, literal and adaptation, literal and amplification, literal and transposition, literal and modulation, literal and colque, borrowing and amplification, literal and description, borrowing and modulation, borrowing and adaptation, borrowing and transposition, modulation and colque, reduction and colque,  and reduction and adaptation), and triplet translation technique (1,19%) data consisting of 4 variants (literal + borrowing + modulation, literal + amplification + transposition, literal + amplification + borrowing, and literal + transposition + reduction). Researcher concludes that translation technique of legal texts from English into Indonesian conducted by Indonesian sworn translators contains three kinds of translation techniques, i.e. single translation technique, couplet translation technique, and triplet translation technique with 30 variants

Abstract

In line with the development of technology, translation technic has developed significantly in terms of the utility of translation machine, like that in Google translation. This technique is now being commonly used by people from all education levels. This phenomenon attracts the researcher to identify the quality of the results of translation machine. Translation is basically a process of transfering massage from one language to another, both the meaning and the language corpus. A translator has to cope not only with the source and target language systems but also the discipline in question. This research applies qualitative method studying on verbal materials in the forms of words, phrases, sentences and even paragraphs. The researcher makes use of articles from verious disciplines, like economy, technology, sosial and health as the source of data. The analysis shows that the translation texts resulted from translation machine are significantly defective in carrying out meanings in the level of words, phrases and sentences; which come with the different contexts. In spite of the inappropriateness in translation results, the translation machine is still helpful to some extents.
