Abstract

Despite the increasing number of Indonesian postgraduate students studying overseas, including in the United Kingdom, not many studies have been done on their intercultural communication experiences and academic engagement. This research aims to investigate Indonesian postgraduate students’ intercultural communication experiences and academic engagement in the United Kingdom. In this study, we address the following research question: What are the hindering factors and the facilitating factors of Indonesian postgraduate students’ academic engagement within their courses of study? A qualitative research method is used in this study, based on semi-structured interviews with 13 participants. The results of the study indicate that the students are more engaged in some areas, such applying deep learning strategies by connecting ideas, and less engaged in others, such as interacting with academic staff. Several interrelated factors were indicated as contributing to facilitating or hindering academic engagement which include sociocultural, institutional, and individual factors. The hindering factors consists of the transition to a new academic environment, intense academic workload, ‘expert’ or ‘boring tutors, linguistic barriers, and having feelings of uneasiness. Conversely, the facilitating factors consist of institutional support service, course design, caring and casual tutors, learning from prior experiences, having the initiative to ask, and realizing to make the most of the opportunity.

Abstract

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted educational communication, as traditional teaching and learning have been replaced by online digital teaching and learning. Thus, teachers must adapt quickly to new technology to meet the lesson objectives and successfully deliver their lessons. This study explores teachers’ adaptation experience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was gathered in Mutiara Bunda Elementary School, an inclusive private school in Bandung with religious education at its core. In-depth interviews and introspection were conducted with four Islamic education teachers across grades. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that teachers went through five overlapping stages: confusion, trial and error, capacity building, adaptation, and efforts to find new solutions. However, different challenges were faced by each teacher according to the grades they taught. Even though teachers had finally adapted and transformed the teaching and learning experience, traditional face-to-face communication was still preferred by 1st to 3rd-grade teachers to deliver the lessons effectively. Lack of the teachers’ IT skills to deliver the lessons to develop the students’ character, inexperience in online teaching, and the students’ low motivation to learn through the digital platform clearly constitute the main obstacle in this religious, educational process.

Abstract

Ruangguru is a digital media learning application created by a startup that understands Generation Z. It provides teaching materials for elementary, junior high, and high school children that can be accessed via Android, iOS, and PC (Windows and macOS), as part of their daily use. This breakthrough was made to maintain school-aged children’s interest and motivation to learn, as Ruangguru carries the tagline: Belajar Jadi Luar Biasa (Learning Becomes Extraordinary) through facilities such as videos, practice exercises, private lessons, as well as tryouts. The novelty in this study lies in the concept of "Master Teacher". Based on the observation and interviews conducted, Ruangguru uses the term "Master Teacher" to refer to the instructors, which raises an understanding of the quality instructors Ruangguru has. Therefore, the researchers intend to reveal the Master Teacher’s learning strategy during the online learning process through digital media. The objectives of this study are as follows: 1) to explore the Master Teacher’s learning strategy while preparing interesting digital media-based applications; 2) to identify Ruangguru’s target audience 3) to explore reasons for using Master Teacher as part of the learning strategy. The research has used case study as a qualitative method to collect data through interviews, observation, and literature studies. The results of this study indicate that: 1) Ruangguru as a learning application provides content for various levels in an interesting way through videos, practice questions, private lessons, tryouts which can be accessed from a smartphone; 2) Ruangguru’s content is adapted from the national curriculum and specifically designed by the best and experienced teachers. It is aimed at Generation Z ranging from elementary, junior high, to high school students; 3) Master Teacher (MT), as Ruangguru’s strong point, serves as a representative in delivering digital media-based transformative learning strategies to Generation Z; 4) Transformative learning strategy is used by Ruangguru Master Teacher (MT) because it suits Generation Z’s characteristics that like Ruangguru’s digital media as a platform to deliver messages. Since the urgency and potential of learning through digital media are considered as an important finding in this research, it is recommended that the results of this study are utilized, disseminated, and developed in learning processes.

Abstract

Kindergarten (PAUD) as a second learning vehicle after the family environment for early childhood, gives a distinct impression for those who experience it. As a place to play while learning that is full of educational values, it should provide varied learning. Especially in the current digital era, early childhood learning media must also be developed. This is the reason we carry out Community Service (PkM) activities targeting early childhood children in an early childhood education center located in Ciparagejaya village, Karawang district. Its location close to the coast, becomes a learning vehicle for the people who are there. Therefore, we also carried out PkM activities with the title "Improving Early Childhood Creativity through Games as Creative Learning Media Education in PAUD Ciparagejaya Village, Karawang Regency". The purpose of implementing PkM is to increase the creativity of early childhood in the PAUD environment through creative learning media education. The PkM method used is the roleplay method and the participatory method, where children are directly involved in learning activities through games as a form of creative learning media education. The results obtained indicate the active participation of children in the learning process, train children's creativity through creative learning media stimuli, and instill moral values in the form of honesty, self-confidence, as well as perseverance and enthusiasm for learning.

Abstract

The tourism awareness movement is an important aspect that must be developed in realising the development of tourism villages in Jatigede sub-district. This can be realised with the support of the local community. Therefore, the PPM programme carried out by the Communication Science Study Programme is to encourage the potential for increasing the village tourism awareness movement in Jatigede sub-district. In addition, according to the concept of tourism management, tourism in the village can also be institutionalised through the existence of Tourism Awareness Groups which will be an important force in managing tourism potential by collaborating with other parties in the village. This Community Service Programme (PPM) has been carried out in the October-November 2023 period with various series of activities. The purpose of this PPM is to create a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) in the Jatigede area in the future. Prodi Ilkom conducted a series of surveys of village potential up to the monitoring and evaluation stage as the final PPM activity.
