Abstract

The Punden of Mbah Sentono is a sacred landscape that is used frequently by people to increase their spirituality. It is recognized as a sacred place to perform rituals such as tahlilan, slametan and ruwatan desa. The main issue I raise in this paper concerns the social-political significance of the rituals. The three main questions are, first, how is ruwatan practiced in the Punden of Mbah Sentono? Second, how have political actors used the ritual in the punden as a political tool in an election? The last, how have people also used the ritual in the punden to counter the political actors’ use the ritual? I will show that the rituals do have social-political significance and argue that both political actors and people in society have mutual relations through the rituals. From this point of view, I state that ritual in the Punden of Mbah Sentono is divided into two time periods, “during election period” and “after election period”. “The ritual during election period” are tahlilan and slametan which are handled by the candidates of the local election to build political support, whereas “the ritual after election” is ruwatan desa which is also used by the winner for negotiation and reconciliation to ease the negative impacts of the competitions during the local election, which affect people. On the other hand, people also use the rituals to ask for financial support from the candidates for holding big ruwatan desa and kirap. In the years before and after the election, ruwatan desa is held as small events. In this research, I analyze the social-political significance of ritual, using a theoretical framework informed by Kertzer.

Abstract

Inilah esensi toleransi di mana masing-masing pihak untuk mengendalikan diri dan menyediakan ruang untuk saling menghormati keunikannya masing-masing tanpa merasa terancam keyakinan maupun hak-haknya.(Tolerance in Islam is an interesting and important issue to study, because many of the Muslims understand tolerance with inappropriate understanding. Therefore, an in-depth study of the concept of tolerance in Islam is needed. Especially the concepts of tolerance contained in prophetic hadiths. The implementation of the study of hadiths with the theme of the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims can also create a sense of tolerance and be able to trigger synchronization of inter-religious life so as to create a harmonious religious atmosphere without intimidation between one religion with another religion. Tolerance in Islam does not mean being syncretic (a process of combining several religious or belief ideals or schools). However, tolerance in Islam is an attitude of respect and respect for other faiths and religions outside of Islam, not equating or equaling them with Islamic beliefs themselves. So, there are common boundaries that may and should not be violated. This is the essence of tolerance where each party is in control of themselves and provides space to respect each other's uniqueness without feeling threatened by their beliefs or rights.)

Abstract

Islamic command on amar ma‘rûf nahy munkar has been basically intended for all Muslims regardless of their theological affiliation. Mu‘tazila, however, has a typical understanding of it. Qâdî ‘Abd al-Jabbâr, as one of Mu‘tazili-tes clerics and theologians, who wrote Sharh al-Usûl al-Khamsah discusses the concept of amar ma‘rûf nahy munkar together with its contextual meaning and how to implement it on the real live. This problem is investigated and analyzed by using descriptive methodology, and hermeneutic analysis. From the data collected and analysis conducted it is concluded that amr ma‘rûf nahy munkar in ‘Abd al-Jabbâr thought is considered wâjib al-kifâyah in a sense that it should be in accordance with the capacity and competence of its doers, with the method of treatment ranging from soft to firm action, even with fight whenever necessary to do so. And in order to be able to apply its concept, the Islamic Caller, the Government, the Ulama and Intellectuals and even the Common People must be qualified and fulfill some criteria and standard.

Abstract

This article explores the dynamic interaction between Islam and local cultures in Indonesia, focusing on the acculturation process catalyzed by the Walisongo. The historical context of Indonesia during the Walisongo period encompassed diverse local cultures, including animism, Hindu-Buddhism, and indigenous beliefs. The Walisongo adopted an inclusive approach, adapting Islamic teachings to align with local cultural norms, languages, and traditions. This study reveals how this approach facilitated the gradual spread of Islam, leading to its harmonious integration with the rich tapestry of local culture. Recognizing the significance of effective communication, the Walisongo employed local languages, arts, and customs to convey Islamic principles. This strategy forged bridges of understanding between Islam and Indonesia's varied cultures, fostering unity and inclusivity. As a result of this acculturation, unique local Islamic traditions emerged, marked by the fusion of Islamic practices with pre-existing customs and rituals. The incorporation of Islamic values into traditional cultural expressions, such as the use of the wayang kulit shadow puppet theater in Javanese culture, exemplifies this harmonious coexistence. Unlike an assimilationist approach, the Walisongo embraced cultural diversity and preserved indigenous beliefs, effectively integrating them into Islamic practices. This preservation of local identity and cultural heritage ensured that communities maintained their distinctiveness while embracing the tenets of Islam. The process of acculturation not only promoted socio-religious harmony but also established mutual respect and peaceful coexistence by accommodating local customs and beliefs. This research sheds light on the transformative impact of the Walisongo's approach in diffusing Islam across the archipelago. Their inclusive and adaptive methods resulted in a unique Indonesian Islamic identity, characterized by the harmonious interplay of Islamic values with diverse cultural expressions. As Indonesia continues to navigate its religious and cultural landscape, the Walisongo's legacy serves as a potent testament to the potential for peaceful coexistence and unity within the intricate fabric of diversity. This study offers valuable insights for contemporary scholars, policymakers, and religious leaders seeking to understand the enduring legacy of the Walisongo and the importance of embracing cultural diversity for societal cohesion and inclusivity.

Abstract

This article aims to examine in depth the style of interpretation of adabî-ijtima’î. Muhammad Abduh considered some books of tafsir at that time and earlier times to be arid and rigid, because many interpreters directed attention to linguistic technicalities without paying attention to social aspects and eventually moved away from the purpose of the Qur'an. Abduh gave a breakthrough to this problem by presenting the style of tafsir adabî-ijtima’î, which is a style of interpretation of the Quran whose presentation emphasizes the beauty of language (literature). At the same time, the description of the discussion is more directed at socio-cultural criticism and community improvement based on the hidayah of the Qur'an. This article is the result of library research using a descriptive-analytical approach. The ijtima'î style is a tafsir that emphasizes an in-depth study of social and socio-cultural conditions by finding social "pathologies" in a society, mufassir tries to dig up instructions or guidelines from the Qur'an to improve the social conditions of the community. This method aims to free the mind from the shackles of taqlid and improve the Arabic style.
