Abstract

Over the past twenty-five years, gender and politics scholars have engaged in extensive theoretical and empirical discussions about women’s political representation. This article provides a comprehensive literature review of these studies. This study is divided into three themes: descriptive representation of women, substantive representation of women, and the correlation between descriptive and substantive representation of women. The literature review method is carried out by exploring and compiling studies on women’s political representation from various countries, classifying them based on specific topics, and mapping out what has been explored in these studies. The results of the study show that most of the research on women’s political representation is in the realm of women’s descriptive representation, which generally discusses the factors that affect the level of women’s political representation, obstacles and challenges in women’s political representation and the strategies used by women candidates in electoral politics. Meantime, studies on women’s substantive representation still need to be explored, especially in the context of countries in Asia, especially Indonesia. Then, studies on the relationship between descriptive and substantive representations of women show two debate patterns. Some experts believe a positive correlation exists between increasing the number of women’s representation and its substantive effect. Some others find no correlation between the descriptive and substantive representations of women.

Abstract

This article describes the experiences and reflections of women activists in facing the challenges of advocating for the issue of sexual violence and the implementation of Anti Sexual Violence Law (UU TPKS) at the community level. A qualitative research method with a feminist perspective was deployed and thus data collection was conducted through interviews with women activists from different regions such as Aceh, Flores, Banjarmasin, Semarang and Yogyakarta. This study develops the perspectives of sociology of law and feminism to understand the extent to which internal and external aspects influence the implementation of the TPKS Law in the community including gender issues in it. The study results show that the implementation of UU TPKS needs to be seen as a complex and non-linear process due to the challenges of legal plurality reflected by the diversity of customary/local laws in a number of communities in Indonesia. Thus, special efforts are needed that not only focus on the provision of legal products, but also on how the legal products, such as UU TPKS, could be seen as inputs that have targets on the transformation of legal culture to the community level.

Abstract

East Lombok Regency, despite implementing pregnancy health programs, grapples with a persistently high pregnancy risk. This study investigates the disparity between medical and Sasak cultural perspectives on young mothers’ pregnancy risks. Qualitative case study research reveals a conflict between community sociocultural narratives and medical viewpoints. Cultural norms normalize medical narratives, shaping pre-marital reproductive arrangements, body perceptions, and idealized pregnancy concepts. Young mothers, influenced by cultural values, accept pregnancy as a collective social process within the family. The study emphasizes the impact of cultural determinism on shaping perceptions and preferences for young mothers’ pregnancy health, highlighting the need for an integrated approach that bridges medical and cultural perspectives to address and mitigate pregnancy risks effectively.

Abstract

Child marriage remains persistent in Indonesia, rooted in entrenched gender norms and structural inequality. Although legal reforms have been introduced, their implementation remains limited due to gaps in knowledge production and dissemination between national and local actors. This study examines the complexity of child marriage using gender and intersectionality perspectives, focusing on socio-cultural, economic, and legal factors that contribute to its persistence in the Special Region of Yogyakarta following amendments to the 1974 Marriage Law. Using a phenomenological approach, data were collected through literature reviews, observations, and in-depth interviews with 40 participants, including youth, parents, community leaders, cadres, and policymakers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Findings reveal that traditional gender norms, limited reproductive health knowledge, economic pressures, and weak policy enforcement collectively reinforce child marriage practices. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for comprehensive sexuality education, integrated implementation of the Violence Law and Marriage Law, and stronger enforcement mechanisms to combat child marriage and promote gender equity. This article aims to provide policymakers and legislators, particularly Commissions VIII and X, with insight into the design and implementation of regulations, programs, and activities that promote gender justice and child protection.

Abstract

This article focuses on the dynamics of young women's experiences in using internet-based technology amid the increasing trend of online gender-based violence (OGBV). This study deploys a qualitative approach, in which data collection is conducted through Forum Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interviews. Using feminist standpoint theory, women tending to be at risk of being victims become main informant. From their experiences, the   meaningful information of how technology turns to be a new arena for the practice of violence against women could be identified.  However, sociologically, based on the subaltern counterpublic perspective, the current study also shows that technology allows women to create safe spaces. Therefore, there is capacity of agentive practice that could be utilized to anticipate, respond to and resist the risk of OGBV, whether in the individual level or based on collective solidarity.

Abstract

This article discusses the extent to which the SRHR narrative is reproduced in the Papuan context. In the process, data collection was carried out by combining document studies, self-reflexive, and interviews. The involvement of one of the researchers who is also an Indigenous Papuan (Orang Asli Papua – OAP) allows for self-reflection regarding the context and issues of SRHR in Papua. While in the interview process, women’s bodily experience is placed as a center for understanding the dynamics of reproductive health problems in the broader context of Papua. Specific issues such as unwanted pregnancies (Kehamilan Tidak Diinginkan – KTD) are key topics during the interview process. The results of the study show that SRHR issues among young people in Papua cover specific issues such as unwanted pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and violence against women. However, in the exploration of specific topics such as KTD, it was found that there is a gap in knowledge and skills in understanding and translating the substance of SRHR due to conflicting economic issues, traditions, and changes in meaning around sexuality due to the influence of modernization. Therefore, the intersectionality framework, both theoretically and methodologically, has the potential to be developed for further studies to obtain a comprehensive mapping of the dynamics of SRHR challenges and the need for innovative approaches in Papua.
