Abstract

In recent decades, the integration of web-based learning media into English Language Teaching (ELT) has become an ideal choice for the educators to support students’ success in learning English. This research presents the use of a web-based learning medium (Webquest) to enhance students’ writing achievement. It involved sixty-two of eleventh grade students which divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. The researchers applied Webquest in experimental class to investigate whether the integration of Webquest into teaching and learning activities was effective or not to improve students’ writing achievement. To collect the data, writing test in form of essaywas administered to both groups. The data were analyzed by using independent and pair t-tests. The results revealed that the experimental group students’ writing achievement outperformed the control group students’ writing achievement. In a nutshell, it is believed that Webquest is an effective learning tool to improve students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

The utilization of web-based learning media in English Language Teaching (ELT) has become a popular trend and gained more acceptances among educators and students in recent decades. Webquest is a web-based learning medium used for supporting students in learning and improving their English skills. The aims of this study was to find out whether Webquest can be an alternative learning medium for students to promote the enhancement of their English skills, especially reading and writing through investigating the way students perceived it in teaching and learning process. This study used descriptive method which involved thirty-one of eleventh grade students as the participants. The data were collected by conducing interview and administering questionnaire dealing with five issues; instruction and timing, task, relevance and involvement, collaborative learning, and evaluation. The result revealed that students had favorable perceptions towards the use of Webquest in promoting their reading and writing skills. The students believed that Webquest is an alternative learning medium which facilitate them to attain deeper comprehension and better achievement both in reading and writing. Abstract

Abstract: The integration of technology into English Language Teaching (ELT) has been developed recently. Many studies revealed that the impacts of English instructional technology can enhance the students’ English learning achievements. However, there are some problems that need more concern from educators.One of them is reading comprehension as it is one of the crucial skills in National Examination in Indonesia. To empower students’ reading comprehension, the successful integration of English instructional technology into ELT could be the solution to cope with it. In this study, Webquest is an instructional technology tool used to increase students’ reading comprehension achievements. Sixty two of senior high school students were involved as participants of this study. By conducting experimental research, thirty-one students were in the experimental group and the others were in the control group. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved higher scores than the control group. It indicates that Webquest is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension achievements. In a nutshell, the implementation of technology in ELT could empower students’ reading comprehension. Key words: English instructional technology, reading comprehension, Webquest

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the correlation between digital literacy and English proficiency of first-year students at Unika Musi Charitas. One hundred seventy three students were involved by using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by using questionnaire which elaborates students’ digital literacy as well as the score of their English proficiency. To analyze the results, Pearson Product Moment formula was used to measure the relationship between the two discussed variables. Findings were described into the results of participants’ English proficiency level, digital literacy insight as well as the correlation test. Viewing from the proficiency level, 64.2% of the participants were categorized as basic users which can perform limited language use on daily topics. In addition, the mean score of their digital literacy insight was 66.99 with the maximum and minimum scores were 100 and 10 descriptively. The correlation test obtained significant correlation between digital literacy and English proficiency with Pearson correlation value of 0.394 at significance level of 0.000. This strongly confirms that the ability of using digital things and language carry positive intercourse.Keywords: Digital literacy, English proficiency

Abstract

Collaborative learning is a learner-centered approach that facilitates students to involve in a team work in order to achieve a certain goal in learning activities. This descriptive qualitative study investigated the pros and cons of integrating collaborative learning into lesson plan design from the perspectives of thirty students of primary school teacher education study program. Questionnaire and interview were used to figure out the students’ perspectives dealing with the issues. The data were collected, classified, analyzed, and interpreted. The results revealed that providing support system, developing communication skills, promoting autonomous learning, enhancing interaction, motivation, confidence, and critical thinking, and enriching knowledge, insight, and experience are among the pros of collaborative learning. Meanwhile, the cons of collaborative learning include imbalance task distribution, personal conflict, and distraction causes. Therefore, guiding, monitoring, and evaluating from the lecturer are highly required to maximize the pros and minimize the cons. It is expected that this research provides new perspectives of the utilization of collaborative learning in EFL learning activities especially lesson plan design.

Abstract

As Chat GPT rose to fame rapidly, it has drawn attention of researchers around the globe to conduct studies related to the use of Chat GPT in various sectors including education. This study aims to investigate the use of Chat GPT in ELT through reviewing numerous previous related journal articles. In this review study, the researchers collected thirty journal articles from several primary online databases, such as: ERIC, Google Scholar, Sage Pub, ProQuest, Elsevier, Academia, and Research Net. To analyze the data, the researchers performed a set of procedures, namely data selection, classification, analysis, and conclusion. The results indicate that Chat GPT is a powerful tool that potentially brings benefits yet it requires more consideration and caution to be properly and effectively implemented. In a nutshell, the role of human resources is required to remain dominant and Chat GPT is probably used as a supporting element in ELT. It is expected that this study provides fruitful insights that are highly beneficial to promote proper understanding and implementation of Chat GPT in ELT.

Abstract

This descriptive research aims to shed light the general portrait of the utilization of EnglishScore as an international standardized test. It also intends to describe the test takers’ insights on the use of EnglishScore application. Eighty-two participants involved in this study. Questionnaire was employed to collect the data. The data were analyzed by Miles, et al Model consisting of collection, classification, description, and conclusion. The results imply that EnglishScore is an ideal and innovative English test and it is valid to use to measure the test takers’ English proficiency level since it is aligned with CEFR. Thus, it facilitates a better understanding and achievement of the test takers’ English proficiency.
