Abstract

The implementation of a deposit insurance scheme entails a trade off. On one hand, as shown in theoretical and empirical studies, a deposit insurance scheme reduces the likelihood of a bank run. On the other hand, a deposit insurance scheme induces moral hazard among bankers that may lead to bank failures. We rigorously test the effect of different deposit coverage limit and the implementation of a differential premium treatment on bankers’ behaviors in the deposit and credit market. We do so by designing a laboratory experiment that involves real bankers as participants. We find that the coverage limit treatments do not have any effect on deposit rate offer. Nevertheless, we find that a high deposit coverage limit induces smaller banks to have a higher share of risky projects. This is evidence of moral hazard particularly among small banks.

Abstract

A weak finding of behavioral intention and behavior in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) from a meta-analysis study by Armitage and Conner in 2001 has led to an increasing number of studies aiming to improve the TPB. Several researchers propose potential constructs to bridge the theoretical and empirical gap by suggesting that the construct of desire and the implementation of intentions can fill the theoretical and empirical gaps in the TPB model. The literature study aimed to retrospectively explore TPB studies with desire and implementation of intentions constructs in the behavioral science domain. The research retrieved 191 SCOPUS indexed papers (2012–2019) from the Google Scholars database. It summarized the descriptive data and produced visualization using VOSviewer. The results show that most studies developing the TPB model with other behavioral theories still focus on constructs to shape behavioral intentions because the behavioral intention construct is the best predictor of behavior. Most studies apply a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design to collect primary data. In contrast, the experimental and longitudinal design approaches are relatively neglected in this TPB behavioral study. Furthermore, the analysis of 191 papers shows that the TPB model is often used in research in environmental, sustainable, and transport settings; health; psychological; hospitality and tourism; and innovation and technology. In addition, the use of the TPB model in research with entrepreneurial and legal settings is still limited. From these findings, the research proposes empirical research on TPB to implement further the relationship between desire and intention implementation to improve the TPB model by integrating the TPB model with several other theories, such as Mindset Theory of Action Phase and Model Goal-Directed Behaviour.

Abstract

Cigarette products certainly have a negative impact on health, especially for teenagers. Although there is a growing body of literature on the positive social influence of peers as a preventative measure, it is unclear how they react when convinced of the truth of its negative impact on health. This experimental study aims to examine the impact of negative health consequences on adolescents' emotions and behavior. Through an online invitation and randomization process, 78 high school students from South Sumatra Province, Indonesia were eligible to participate in the online experimental study. We compared two groups (experimental vs. control) to examine the impact of negative health consequences on their emotions (empathy) and behavior (prosocial behavior). Our findings show that, as compared to adolescents in the non-convincing health message condition (n=40), adolescents in the convincing negative health message condition (n=38) had higher empathy (sign=0.005) and prosocial behavior (sign=0.028) to assist their smoking peers. Our findings provide a valuable information to sustainability development in the future through reducing underage smokers. We suggest that the use of convincing method to develop a school-based social marketing program for handling adolescent smoking problem

Abstract

This research aims to reveal information quality, social friendship, and social interaction in predicting web usage and understanding of online news readers and also to reveal that web usage predicts online news readers’ understanding. This quantitative research uses an online survey design based on a purposive sampling technique using 423 respondents who are active readers of online news. The data in the study were analyzed using SEM Amos and SPSS 21. The results and findings showed that information quality and social interaction could positively and significantly predict web usage and understanding of online readers. Web usage could also predict online reader understanding positively and significantly. Social friendships could not predict web usage and reader understanding of online news based on research results. The theoretical implication of the research aims to fill the gap in the existing literature on information quality and social interaction that can explain web usage and understanding of online newsreaders and web usage as a predictor to explain the effect of comprehension as an individual’s intended media use. The practical implication of this study is that websites as news sources must pay attention to information and features that are more attractive to readers or potential online news readers.
