Abstract

Background: Stainless-steel orthodontic wire is one of appliance component frequently used in orthodontics treatment and persisted in oral cavity for an extended period, thus may generate corrosion via ion release. An attempt to reduce corrosion rate is by using organic inhibitor which contains antioxidant. This substance can be simply found in green tea leaves. Objective: To discover the efficacy of green tea leaves as a corrosion inhibitor for stainless-steel orthodontic wire. Methods: It is an experimental laboratory research with post-test only control group design. As many as 24 samples were divided into 4 groups which immersed in artificial saliva: one group without any treatment and 3 groups given green tea leaves extract, each in 6.25%, 12.5% and 25% concentration. Corrosion rate was measured using potentiodynamic methods (Tafel). Data was analyzed using one way ANOVA test followed by post-hoc tukey HSD test. Result: There was significant difference in corrosion inhibitory efficacy among treatment groups (p<0.05). The highest corrosion rate value was found in no-treatment group (average value 0.195). The highest corrosion rate reduction was found in treatment group number four supplemented with 25% concentration of green tea leaves extract as inhibitory substance (p=0.0325). Conclusion: Green tea leaves extract is proven to be effective as corrosion inhibitor for stainless-steel orthodontic wire.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Maloklusi merupakan salah satu masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang cukup besar.Kurva spee yang datar merupakan salah satu syarat dari 6 kunci oklusi normal menurut Lawrence FAndrews dan kondisi maloklusi dapat dievaluasi dengan menggunakan indeks PAR. Tujuan: Penelitian inibertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan kedalaman kurva spee dengan tingkat keparahan maloklusiberdasarkan indeks Peer Assessment Rating (PAR). Metode: Penelitian yang dilakukan merupakan jenispenelitian analitik dengan menggunakan pendekatan cross sectional. Sampel yang digunakan dalampenelitian ini adalah 49 model studi rahang atas dan rahang bawah mahasiswa preklinik FakultasKedokteran Gigi Universitas Brawijaya. Model studi yang dipilih adalah model studi dengan gigi permanenlengkap hingga molar kedua, kondisi model studi tidak pecah, retak, dan porus, dan tidak sedangmelakukan perawatan ortodonti saat dilakukan pencetakan model studi. Pengukuran dilakukan denganmembandingkan hasil kedalaman kurva spee dengan tingkat keparahan maloklusi berdasarkan indeks PAR.Hasil pengukuran kemudian dianalisa dengan menggunakan uji normalitas Saphiro Wilk, kemudiandilanjutkan dengan uji homogenitas Levene’s Test, dan uji korelasi Pearson, setelah itu dilakukan ujipengaruh dengan menggunakan uji regresi. Hasil: Hasil analisa data menggunakan uji korelasi pearsonterdapat korelasi yang positif,antara kedalaman kurva spee dengan tingkat keparahan maloklusiberdasarkan indeks Peer Assessment Rating dengan hasil sig<0.05. Didapatkan juga r hitung yang positif(r=0.606) artinya semakin tinggi kedalaman kurva spee maka indeks PAR juga semakin tinggi yangmenunjukkan maloklusi yang semakin parah. Kesimpulan: Terdapat hubungan antara kedalaman kurvaspee dengan tingkat keparahan maloklusi berdasarkan in Peer Asessment Rating (PAR). Abstract

Background: Determining anatomical landmarks - in the cranium, maxilla and mandible - as well as measuring skeletal and dental angles on cephalometric radiographs are supporting examinations that determine important diagnoses in orthodontic treatment. Traditionally, cephalometric analysis has been performed by tracing radiographic landmarks on acetate overlays and measuring linear and angular variables using protractor. However, despite its widespread use in orthodontics, the technique is time consuming and has several drawbacks, including a high risk of error in tracing, landmark identification, and measurement. Objective: to evaluate the difference of cephalometric measurements using manual and digital technique. Method: pre-treatment cephalometric digital radiographs of 40 patients were traced manually and digitally using WebCeph Ver. 1.0.0 computer software program by the same investigator. A total of 8 anatomical landmarks were located and five angular measurements based on Steiner Analysis were measured. Independent t-tests and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the difference of manual and digital measurements. Result: the p-values for SNA, SNB, ANB, I-NA, I-NB were greater than 0.05 (p>0.05).
