Abstract

Trauma, meaning wound, is a common phenomenon in our modern world and this phenomenon is represented in many works of literature in various ways. One of the examples of literary work that attempts to represent trauma is Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro, a 1914 Japanese novel written by one of the most famous Japanese author. This research aims to answer the question of how trauma shape a person’s identity in the translated version of Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro (1957). This research focuses on the character development of one of the main character in the story, Sensei. Employing Caruth’s (1995) trauma theory as a the theoretical framework, this study uses descriptive qualitative as the approach. The result finds that Sensei’s identity is shaped by two major traumatic event in his life, the betrayal of his uncle and the death of his close friend. In response to the two tragic events, Sensei constructs an identity that are characterized by attributing cynical attitude, attaching guilt, and casting fear. Because he feels he is haunted by his trauma, he decided to commit suicide in order to be free. The way Sensei constructs his identity in response to his traumatic past is also a reflection of a postmodern notion identity in which a person’s identity is never absolute and is prone to change. Keywords: Identity, trauma, Japanese literature.

Abstract

The issue of power is prevalent in society today. Focusing on analyzing power issues in an intercultural marriage, Raven’s (2008) bases of power are applied in this research to investigate the matter. The issue is analyzed in a memoir by Susan Blumberg-Kason entitled Good Chinese Wife (2014) which tells about the conflicts in an intercultural marriage. This research aims to identify the types of power proposed by Raven (2008) used by the husband, to exercise his power over his wife and how it is exercised. The only visible types of power in the memoir are expert power, referent power, and coercive power. In addition, the conflict that is caused by superiority becomes the main conflict in their marriage life since it occurs in every three types of power. The husband can exercise his power over his wife because he takes advantage of her love for the husband’s culture, which in this case is Chinese culture. The results of the study show that power can be constructed in the name of love.  Keywords: culture; intercultural marriage; memoir; power; superiority.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the portrayal of power dynamics in Leigh Bardugo’s young adult novel Six of Crows. The study uses qualitative descriptive method to analyze how power dynamics is portrayed in the novel. Data was collected through textual evidence that showcases the exercise of power and analyzed based on Foucault’s (1982) theory of power. The study finds that power dynamics is portrayed through a series of conflicts between the six main characters. These conflicts are mostly verbal. Power is exercised in the form of arguments and bickers, in which of the six characters attempt to constantly gain authority and power over one another. Among the six characters, conflicts and exercise of power can be found in four notable character pairings. The power that is exercised is seen through exploitation of one’s desires, expressions of judgment and hatred, as well as physical conflict in some cases. Keywords: Characters, Foucault, Power, Power dynamics, Six of crows, Young adult.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article discusses the identity construction of Priangan coffee and how it is reflected in the way it is consumed as part of a lifestyle and is later popularized via the social media. Priangan coffee has gained popularity among coffee enthusiasts as it was valued at a higher price in comparison to other Indonesian local coffee. The renewed interest has brought the coffee to the many coffee shops in West Java, in particular Bandung and Jatinangor, where going to coffee shops becomes part of the university students living there. The article looks into the way (or ways) Priangan coffee is consumed and revamped in the coffee discourse which might have partly constituted a new cultural movement in the area. The new culture surrounding coffee is assumed to contain complex interactions of dichotomies such as local-global and given-new. Through questionnaires distributed in coffee shops in Bandung and Jatinangor and interviews that follow, it was found that the cultural movement built around the idea of coffee as part of a new life lifestyle has not strengthened a solid identity for Priangan coffee. Going to coffee shops has become part of a lifestyle which does not necessarily lead to the making coffee enthusiasts. Therefore, there is a need to "educate" coffee goers and to optimize the role played by social media in developing awareness on the local coffee variants, especially Priangan coffee.Tulisan ini membahas konstruksi identitas kopi Priangan dan bagaimana kopi Priangan dikonsumsi dan dipopulerkan melalui media sosial. Abstract

The present study entitled A Study on Conflict Modification in the Novel “I Am Number Four” and its Film Adaptation aims to investigate how conflicts affect the characterization of John Smith in the novel and the film adaptation. The study used a qualitative approach with textual analysis since the focus of the study is the conflicts identified in a form of text in the novel and dialogues in the film adaptation. Framed by the theory of adaptation (Hutcheon, 2006), the study found that even though the identified conflicts in the novel are the same as the identified conflicts in the film adaptation, they were still developed differently because of the dramatization done to the conflicts in the film adaptation, resulting in resolutions that are more violent. By reducing peace, distilling violence and adding violence, the identified conflicts in the film adaptation were modified into conflicts which made the characterization of John Smith more violent-looking, aggressive, unstable, and reckless compared to John Smith in the novel. Keywords: Adaptation; Characterization; Conflict

Abstract

Teacher professional identity has emerged as a central topic in educational research since the 1990s in light of the increasing understanding of teachers’ roles in different contexts that influence their attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs in teaching (Beijaard, 2019). The identity construction process of English for Young Learners (EYL) teachers in Indonesia needs to be studied more. Employing the narrative inquiry method (Connelly & Clandinin, 1990), this study investigated the process of teacher professional identity construction of four EYL teachers in four different elementary schools in Bandung, Indonesia, and the extent to which the journey affects their beliefs and practice in teaching EYL. I collected the data using semi-structured online interviews, photovoice, and classroom observation. The results suggest that participants' teacher professional identity (TPI) was shaped by experiencing critical events, participating in professional development programs, involving themselves in a community of practice, experiencing teaching practicum, supporting school culture and environment, and teachers' interest in teaching English to young learners itself. This study has also demonstrated how the participants' construction journey impacts the change of their beliefs and practices in teaching EYL. This study sheds light on the significance of the support from EYL stakeholders in affording opportunities for teachers’ learning and professional development.
