Abstract

Not few renowned English courses have hired foreign English teachers to gain more learners, so do formal schools or universities. Some of the teachers are hired professionally, and some are volunteers as a part of an agreement between the institution and a non-profit organization to teach in developing countries. The presence of foreign English teachers or commonly known as NESTs (Native English-Speaking Teachers) in many Indonesian educational institutions is inevitable. Yet, so many pros and cons have shadowed their existence in ELT classes. Some people problematize their being overpaid and other question their educational background or teaching experience despite their being native. This phenomenon has created a gap between NESTs and their domestic counterparts. What are they supposed to think? Should domestic English teachers or known as NNESTs (Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers) be worried about this phenomenon? This paper tries to evaluate this phenomenon from several different points of view, especially with regards to the current status of English as a global language.

Abstract

This research examined the depiction of self-love in Selena Gomez's music through the lens of Roland Barthes' Semiotic analysis model. A qualitative descriptive research was executed to analyse four songs namely: "Who Says," "I Won’t Apologise,"  "Lose You to Love Me," and "Rare" to figure out the self-love traits found in the four songs and to reveal their denotative and connotative implications in the lyrics from Semiotic perspective. The data were collected by textual analysis of the song lyrics using thematic categorization and analyzed using Barthes’ framework. From the eleven characteristics of self-love adopted from many scholars, the researchers found three essential traits of self-love, such as self-awareness, self-acceptance, and emotional resilience. Furthermore, the Semiotic analysis of Selena Gomez’s songs showed that "I Won’t Apologize" contains the most self-love themes, followed by "Lose You to Love Me," "Who Says," and "Rare." Each song highlights different aspects of self-love, from self-empowerment and emotional healing to self-worth and individuality. Using both literal and symbolic language, Gomez’s lyrics encourage resilience, self-acceptance, and personal growth while also challenging societal beauty standards and promoting emotional freedom.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the selected lyrics from Taylor Swift's album "folklore." The data for this study was obtained from the ten most frequently listened-to songs (YouTube, 2020). The primary objective is to identify various metaphors and explore the semiotic meanings within the denotative and connotative of the selected lyrics. This descriptive qualitative research employs data collection through reading and listening analysis of song lyrics, focusing on the identification of metaphors and their meanings. Following the approach outlined by Miles and Huberman (1994), the data analysis involves data reduction, data perspective, and verification. The researchers categorized the metaphors identified in the lyrics into three groups: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors. Utilizing structural metaphors facilitates the comprehension and expression of one idea in terms of another, ensuring a well-defined and organized conceptual framework. Orientational metaphors do not structure one concept in terms of another but instead organize "a whole system with respect to one another." An ontological metaphor is a way of describing abstract or difficult ideas by relating them to more familiar and tangible contexts. The kind of metaphor that is most frequently found in certain songs is the structural metaphor. Next, the meanings of 21 chosen song lyrics are examined using the denotation and connotation meaning. A sign is said to be denotative if there is a high degree of agreement between its signifier and actual meaning. Roland Barthes defined connotation as a system consisting of signifier, signified, and the action that connects the first to the second.

Abstract

This study aims to find the psychopathic behavior portrayed in the movie Accident Man (2018) based on Hare's (2012) twenty types of psychopathic trait also known as PCL-R and the effect of the behavior on the main character life using psychoanalytic approach. This study used qualitative research employing document analysis method. The results of this study reveals seven psychopathic traits done by the main character of the movie, which are superficial charm, lack of remorse, lack of realistic long-term goals, impulsivity, lack of empathy, poor behavioral controls, and criminal versatility. The effect of the psychopathic behavior to the main character life is devastating. It made him to be despised by everyone and made him lose his job even though based on Hare's (2012) PCL-R, the main character cannot be classified as a psychopath because they did not meet the requirements to be categorized as a psychopath. Although he cannot be considered as a psychopath, the seven traits that are revealed in this study suggest that his behavior is always closely related to violence. This study can be used by other researchers who want to study psychopathic behavior further in various literary works and any emerging movie or novel writer that seeks to create a psychopath character by using this study as a reference.
