Abstract

This research is based on the problem of low mathematical reasoning ability of high school students. This study aims to examine the improvement of mathematical reasoning ability among students who get Differentiated Instruction approach and conventional learning. The research design was quasi experiment with non-equivalent control group research design using Purposive Sampling technique. Instruments used include mathematical prior knowledge test, mathematical reasoning tests, observation sheets, and interview guides. Quantitative analysis was performed by using t-test and two-way anova test. The result of the research shows that (1) the improvement of student’s mathematical reasoning ability through DI learning is better than conventional learning, (2) The improvement of student’s mathematical reasoning ability through DI learning is better than the students who follow the conventional learning in terms of Mathematical Prior Knowledge. Keywords: Differentiated Instruction, Mathematical Prior Knowledge, Mathematical Reasoning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by students when solving algebraic operation problems based on the criteria of problem solving ability. This study was conducted to understand the factors that master students' difficulties in solving algebraic problems. This research used descriptive method with qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of 35 students of class VII-G at SMP N 8 Tambun Selatan. Data were collected through observation, tests, questionnaires, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman data analysis model. Data validity was checked through method tringulation. The results showed that of the 35 students studied: 1) 61% of students had difficulty in understanding the problem, 2) 57% of students had difficulty in planning the solution, 3) 73% of students had difficulty in carrying out the plan, and 4) 86% of students had difficulty in checking back. The main factors that influence these difficulties are students' understanding of basic algebraic concepts, difficulties in applying mathematical concepts to the algebraic context and underdeveloped problem solving skills. In understanding math problems and formulating the steps needed to solve them, students often face difficulties.

Abstract

The demand of the Indonesian society to own homes and properties is increasing along with the growth of Indonesia's population. This has led to an increase in population density, causing property prices to rise. The way to own property or a house in accordance with monthly income is by using bank housing loans. Three Indonesian banks renowned for housing loan applications, namely BTN, Mandiri, and BSI, were selected as samples in this study. These three banks have their own advantages and different bank interest rates. Therefore, this research was created as a tool for consumers to make decisions by considering the advantages obtained when applying for a loan at one of the three banks. This study employs the Newton's interpolation method to generate formulas that can help solve consumer problems. The results of this study generally indicate that Mandiri bank has an advantage in terms of lower installment costs compared to BTN and BSI.

Abstract

The daily test results for student of class VII.2 SMPN 58 Jakarta on the Comparison material showed that 30 out of 36 students got scores below the MCML (Minimum Criteria of Mastery Learning). The low test results were not always caused by the level of students’ intellegence, but it could occur because students have difficulty learning, as a student with difficulty learning do not necessarily have inadequate intellegence. The research aimed to determine the type or form of learning difficulties and the causes for students during their learning. The research used qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The population in this research were 30 students of class VII.2 SMPN 58 Jakarta who got daily test scores below the MCML for Comparison material. The interview subjects were 6 out 30 students who were selected through purposive proportional random sampling, and a Math teacher in this class. The results obtained based on the test analysis and interviews found student difficulties, such as in interpreting language, in unsderstanding and using concepts, in using data, and in technical difficulty (counting). Then, the results obtained based on the anlysis questionnaire analysis and interviews found that students had difficulties due to their lack of confidence and mortification in learning, and teacher who didn’t understand each student personally.
