Abstract

Information on meiofauna community structure in Indonesian mangrove areas is stilllimited compared to its vast areas. This study aimed to assess the community structureand abundance of meiofauna on four stations in mangrove areas, located in Teluk UmaVillage, Karimun Regency. Samples were collected from four stations. Station 1, 2,and 3 are dominated by mangrove vegetation Rhizophora sp., Avicennia sp., Bruguierasp., consecutively while station 4 is located in an area without mangrove vegetation(Coral Sand). Meiofauna abundance was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher'stest. The result indicated that meiofauna which were found at the study site consisted of12 taxa namely, Nematodes, Copepods, Polychaeta, Turbellarian, Cumacea,Oligochaeta, Holothuroidea, Syncarida, Isopoda, Ostracoda, Cnidaria, and Tardigrada. The average abundance of meiofauna was 3.22 ind/10 cm 2 . It was also found thatNematodes was the most abundance taxa followed by Copepoda and Polychaeta at allstations. One-way ANOVA results revealed that the abundance of meiofauna in eachstation was significantly different (F=3.52 P<0.05).

Abstract

Batang Lubuh river has significant value to communities living close to the river. Generally, the people take some advantages from the river, such as for household activities (bath, washing and dumping the waste) and fishery. In addition, the river shed is such a beneficial for agriculture and mining. The use of macrozoobenthos as an indicator to identify the change of water quality was reported by some authors, but the information from Riau Province is scarce. The purpose or this research is to know the community structure or Macrozoobenthos at Batang Lubuh river, sub – district Rambah, Rokan Hulu Regency. Sampling was conducted using Eckman Grab 20 cm x 11 cm at 5 station along Batang Lubuh river of sub district Rambah, Rokan Hulu Regency. During this research we found two species of macrozoobenthos, Brotia costula family Thiaridae and Pila scutata family Ampullaridae. The abundance of macrozobenthos in study area was 408 ind/m2. Besides, we also found that Brotia costula as the dominant species. Regression analysis revealed that the correlation between physical and chemical factors such as temperature, brightness, depth, flow velocity, COD and phosphate on macrozoobentos was negative. In addition, DO and nitrate have a positive correlation to macrozoobenthos, while pH and turbidity have no correlation to macrozoobenthos.

Abstract

Mangrove is flora that grows in coastal area and it has high tolerance on salinity. Mangrove plays an important role in nutrient cycle because it produces nutrient for surrounding ecosystem. Riau province has wide mangrove forest located in Dumai city, Bandar Bakau. The aim of the research was to determine the amount of its litter production. There were three zones in this research, namely Upper Zone, Middle Zone and Lower Zone. A total of 10 litter traps (1x1 m2) were placed in each zone using a purposive sampling method. The litter was analyzed in the Laboratory Ecology of Biology Department. Results showed that highest total litter production for threemonths (1091.02 g/m2/month) was found in the Middle Zone. In March, litter production (619.62 g/m2/month) was higher than the others. The data showed that the litter production had a positive correlation with humidity and rainfall in the three zones. A significant value was found in the Lower Zone between litter production and salinity.

Abstract

The Sumatran Elephant is one of the largest land mammal species that exist on the island of Sumatra which is currently critically endangered. The main threat for Sumatran elephant conservation is the fragmentations of its habitat which have been causing a conflict between elephants and humans. Tesso Nilo National Park is an area used as the original habitat of the Sumatran elephants which has now undergone encroachment. Conflicts between humans and elephants have become a much-talked-about issue and a factor which cause the depletion of population of the Sumatran elephant. This research aimed to determine the pattern of movement and the use of space by Sumatran elephants in the habitat that has experienced disturbance by human using GPS Collar and GIS technologies. The data of this research was acquired by attaching a GPS Collar on the leader of the elephant clan and processed using excel and arcGis program. This research was conducted from January 2013 to January 2014 in the northern part of Tesso Nilo National Park (TNTN). The results showed that the daily movement pattern of the elephant was random with an area of 56.631 ha and through several different land types. The elephant preferred a land type with more dense canopy and less disturbance.
