Abstract

This article attempts to examine M. Dawam Rahardjoʾs interpretation through his two works, Ensiklopedi al-Qurʾan: Tafsir Sosial Berdasarkan Konsep-konsep Kunci (The Encyclopedia of the Qurʾan: Social Interpretation Based on Key Concepts) and Paradigma al-Qurʾan: Metodologi Tafsir & Kritik Sosial (Paradigm of the Qurʾan: Methodology of Interpretation and Social Critique). In the treasures of Indonesian commentary literature, the two works of Rahardjo were unique, new and different at the time they appeared. The presentation in encyclopedic form and discussions that raise social issues make these work one of the pioneers of social-thematic interpretation. By using a descriptive-analytical method and a historical approach, this article attempts to trace and examine the ideas of interpretation in the two works hermeneutically to see how Rahardjo reads the Qurʾan in responding the social problems in society. The results of this study show at least three things: first, that Rahardjo’s interpretation from the beginning was directed to respond to ongoing social issues of his time; second, Rahardjo’s thinking was classified as progressive in his time because he attempts to solve social problems by integrating thematic interpretation with social science approach that he masters; third, his hermeneutical reading of the Qurʾan allows his interpretation to be relevant to the problems that exist in society.

Abstract

Contextual interpretation is a popular discourse in the contemporary era in the study of global interpretation. In Indonesia, this discourse is also rolling and has become a hot topic of discussion among commentators. Contextual interpretation then becomes the new alternative chosen by commentators in studying the Qur’an. To prove this hypothesis and at the same time find out to what extent the contextual interpretation discourse has been discussed, the authors examine journal articles from MORAEF, Garuda, and Google Scholar using a systematic literature review method. The journal article search used the keywords “tafsir”, “interpretation”, “contextual”, and “al-Qur’an”, which were applied to the three search sources in the period 2009-2020. This study found that the discourse of contextual interpretation received a positive response in Indonesia. However, there are no significant developments or updates. Quantitatively, the address is proliferating from year to year from 2009-to 2020. Meanwhile, the quality of the study is stagnant and undeveloped. This is because the discourse of contextual interpretation in Indonesia is identical to the figure of Abdullah Saeed. Saeed’s methodology has become a reference for many researchers because it is considered to have wooden steps compared to other contextualist thinkers.

Abstract

Al-Qur'an is a way of life for Muslims. As a way of life, the Qur'an is used as a reference in dealing with various problems of life, including the means to achieve the goals of human life. This means that the Qur'an is used as a tool to achieve this goal. Of course, as a tool, the Qur'an is only positioned as an object and humans are the subject. How do humans treat the Qur'an? This paper tries to explain the various expressions and interactions that occur between the Qur'an and humans in achieving their life goals. The results of this study found that there are at least there are at least three kinds of expressions and interactions that occur, namely: textualist, contextualist, and practical.

Abstract

This article examines how post-colonial Indonesian Qur’anic exegesis contributed to the reconstruction of women’s roles during the nation’s epistemic transition from colonial domination to decolonial self-definition. Drawing on Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis and hegemonic masculinity theory, the study analyzes Hamka’s Tafsīr al-Azhar and Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy’s Tafsīr an-Nūr as two pivotal interpretive trajectories that shaped mid-20th-century Islamic thought in Indonesia. The findings reveal complementary discursive strategies: Hamka advances a moral-spiritual discourse that situates male-female relations within a balanced social fiṭrah and employs tafsir as a medium for national moral reconstruction, while Hasbi articulates a rational-reformist approach emphasizing justice, mutuality, and the historical functionality of gender roles. Both exegetes resist colonial and classical patriarchal hierarchies by reframing women not as passive subjects but as moral and civic agents in nation-building. The study’s primary contribution lies in demonstrating that post-colonial Indonesian tafsīr constitutes a distinct decolonial hermeneutic that recongures gender through three analytical dimensions: women’s morality, rationalization of roles, and epistemic repositioning within Islamic discourse.

Abstract

Chronological interpretation of the Qur'an (tafsīr nuzūlī) has evolved through the interaction between the Islamic exegetical tradition and modern historical approaches. Nevertheless, the intellectual position of Muḥammad ‘Ābid al-Jābirī within this development has not been comprehensively examined. This article aims to analyze the intellectual position and methodological characteristics of al-Jābirī’s tafsīr nuzūlī within contemporary Qur'anic exegesis. Employing a qualitative library research design with a historical-comparative approach, the study draws primarily on Madkhal ilā al-Qur’ān al-Karīm and Fahm al-Qur’ān al-Ḥakīm, complemented by relevant scholarship on Qur'anic chronology, tafsīr nuzūlī, and contemporary Qur'anic interpretation. The analysis identifies the methodological features of al-Jābirī’s exegesis, compares them with earlier chronological commentaries, and maps their relationship to broader developments in contemporary tafsir. The findings demonstrate that al-Jābirī reformulates tafsīr nuzūlī by synthesizing classical exegetical reports, historical inquiry, and the framework of qirā’ah mu‘āṣirah. Unlike earlier chronological exegetes, he develops an ijmālī-mawḍū‘ī structure with a tārīkhī-falsafī orientation, integrating chronological reading, historical analysis, and the contemporary actualization of Qur'anic meaning. The study further reveals that al-Jābirī occupies a mediating intellectual position by preserving the epistemological foundations of the Islamic exegetical tradition while critically incorporating historical approaches without embracing revisionist assumptions. These findings establish al-Jābirī as a significant contributor to the development of modern tafsīr nuzūlī and advance the conceptual mapping of contemporary Qur'anic exegetical methodology.
