Abstract

This paper aims to answer two research questions: (1) What design of an Extensive Reading program can be developed in the EFL setting with time constraints and (2) How do students respond to the design implementation. To achieve these goals, the study used Design-Based Research and, in the practice, it was carried out in 3 major phases. The initial phase was the analysis of practical problems. The second phase was literature research to inform the planning and development of the prototype design and the last phase was the implementation and reflection of the implementation of the design. The study was carried out in one semester in an English Education Department of a university in Indonesia. The study results in an alternative design to an ER+ program that is called Transdicto. Transdicto is conducted in five major steps: (1) extensive reading/ listening, (2) note-taking, (3) exploring, (4) contextualizing, and (5) transforming. Observation and interview revealed that the students responded well to Transdicto; they found the steps of the activity were relatively easy to follow, useful, and engaging

Abstract

Despite the central role of quality teaching in the classroom, students’ learning success depends so much on how learners recognize their own ways and pace of learning. While the implementation of good English pedagogy in terms of applying well-tailored approaches, methods and techniques is believed to be the key for helping students to learn, teachers need to be aware of each individual student’s unique ways and pace of learning in the classroom. Teachers are supposed to be able to help students recognize their needs for learning. Built on an action research study on the inclusion of metacognitive listening strategy instruction, this article highlights the strategic role of the inclusion of metacognitive listening strategy instruction in helping students to improve their self-efficacy in learning listening skills. A range of students’ voices, reflecting their learning experiences during the inclusion of metacognitive listening strategy instruction, reveals that learning awareness in terms of metacognitive listening strategy needs to be developed over time through the inclusion of metacognitive listening strategy instruction. The more the students are familiar with their ways and pace of learning, the better they implement listening learning strategies, which results in students’ learning success.

Abstract

This aticle reveals the ideology proposed in the campursari song entitled Sesideman written by Ki Dalang H Sukron Suwondo. This Critical Discource Analisys (CDA) is based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguictics (SFL) as its analytical framework and Fairclough’s Dialectical Relational model as the conceptual framework. Conceptually, the analysis of the song refers to the three dimensions of CDA proposed by Fairclough. The Theme-Rheme and transitivity systems are used to describe the micro structure of the text, interpret the text, and explain the relations between interations contained in the lyric of the song as refected in the text with the social practices associated with the lyric of the song. The Theme-Rheme structure of the song Sesideman lyric consists of macro theme of the Bowo, the intro part of the lyric, and hyper-theme in the main lyric. The mscro theme structure and the transitivity of the Bowo part depict the background, process, and the effect of the actions committed by the characters in the story contained in the lyric. The hyper-theme structure and the transitivity of the main part of the lyric depict the decision making, the cuases of decision making, and the consequence resulted in the decision making, which includes the material and non-material values. The transitivity of the song lyric is dominated by material process depicting the action committed by the male and female characters of the song lyric. As a form of of social practice and a means to shape society, the campurari song Sesideman depicts the ideology proposed by the song writer upon the phenomena happening in the community surrounding shadow puppet artits (traditional Javanese song singers and pupeteers).
