Abstract

Abstract: This research deals with intertextuality in opinion articles on education. Its objectives are to discover types and functions of intertextuality in the articles and to reveal its social practice. The results of the research reveal there are three major types and two major functions of intertextuality in the articles. The type dominantly applied is indirect quotation and the function dominantly applied is to provide things in detail. The social practice found in the articles is that the intertextuality is functioned to create an image that the articles possess a level of academic text.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to investigate the transitivity and the modality used by the president of Indonesia “Jokowi”. I wanted to find out the power and the image of the president through the analysis of his utterances and answered the relation between social and context. I analyzed two speeches. I took the speech texts from Rappler.com. It was an online news site. I analyzed the data by using Halliday’s theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. There were three findings in this research namely: 1) the word ‘say’ as the verbal process could be also as the example for behavioral process but it needed more explanation that it was verbal in action; 2) The most common process types used by Jokowi were material process, relational process, and mental process. 3) The biggest part of speech 1 and speech 2 were in the level of median politeness.

Abstract

This study focused on language acquisition of down syndrome children in the down syndrome village Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. The down syndrome villages are Krebet sub-district of Jambon, Sidoharjo sub-district of Jambon, Karangpatihan sub-district of Sidoharjo, Pandak sub-district of Balong, and Dayakan sub-district Badegan.            The purpose of this study were (1) to explain the first language acquisition, in both lexical and grammatical; (2) to explain the second language acquisition, both lexical and grammatical; (3) to explain the factors that affect language acquisition of down syndrome children in Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia. The method used in this study include the data providing by interview and questionnaire; the data are analyzed descriptively by stages identifying, classifying, interpreting, and explicating.            The results showed that the down syndrome children aged 7-15 years which were being the research object, mastering the first language (mother tongue) only, it is Javanese in the ngoko form (the Javanese language lowest level). They do not mastered Bahasa Indonesia as the second language as well. The first language acquisition of lexical mastery are in the unique forms, including the mention of an object by a unique form, e.g. knife called pangot, the mention of the object based on its sound (onomatopoeic), for example ‘eong’ to mention cat, elimination of beginning consonants and vowels, elimination of middle consonant, consonant replacements, and others. Down syndrome children did not acquire prefix and also the repetition, did not recognize compound words, the concepts which are mastered is the here and now, the things around him, and now, it is not the past and imagination. In addition, children with Down syndrome do echolalia (imitating others), autoecholalia (repeating his own words), verbal auditory agnosia or cogenital word deafness (phonological perception problem). Some informants also impaired speech or stuttering and selective mutism (not speaking to certain situations and places)            The down syndrome children were studied experienced those cases above since their birth, although some of them had the problems because of high temperature when they were on 6 months, 1.5 years, and 2 years. Inbreeding, maternal age over 35 years, and malnutrition becomes a trigger of down syndrome. The factors that affect the first and second language acquisition are (1) the informant is rarely communicate; (2) the informant never be read bedtime stories before bed; (3) the informant had not been provided the singing before bed; (4) The lack of attention from the family toward education, especially language acquisition. Key words      : language acquisition, down syndrome children, psycholinguistic

Abstract

This research aims (1) to comprehend the relative construction of English andIndonesia language on some texts relating to Donald Trump is elected as the 45thPresident of USA in 2016 semantically, and (2) to describe the analysis of relativeconstructive clauses between English and Indonesia language semantically. Theresearch method is descriptive qualitative. Meanwhile, method of collecting data isagih method and the techniques are substitution, expand, interuption, and mutation.Based on the texts relating to Donald Trump is elected as the President of USA in2016, it is found that the analysis of relative constructive clause of English andIndonesia language is based on the use of conjunction. In Indonesia language texts,there is one conjuction, namely: “yang”, meanwhile in English language texts, thereare five conjuctions, namely: “who, whom, which, whose, and that”. If it is viewedfrom its semantics adjacent, relative clause can be divided into two sections based onits orthographics, namely: (1) restrictive relative clause which refers to the explainedantecedent or as the integral unity from antecedent and unmarked by comma, and(2) non-restrictive relative clause as the additional information from antecedentexplained and marked by comma.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the literary form of language variationcontained in the show Kick Andy episode, “Learn to Death”. The method used isdescriptive qualitative. Provision of data is done by methods refer to listen andunderstand the data linguistic oral form of data in the data source view KickAndy.The technique is a recording and log techniques. The analysis of data usinga unified method. The research result describe that form of language variation inthis show consists of variations in terms of formality, speakers, use, and means.1) The variation in terms of formality using a variety offamiliar, 2) variationsBetawiand Batak dialect speakers are used, 3) variations in the use of more useof registers in the field of education, 4) Variation means used in this show is avariation of oral.

Abstract

The study is about the use of directive speech act or Tindak Tutur Direktif (TTD) in the official meeting events held in the vicinage of Javanese culture civic government by using a gender approach. The data were collected by using the basic techniques of recording and was continued to open listening for participant-interview. The collected data were analyzed by using the techniques of intra-lingual and extra-lingual comparison together with the analysis method of means-end. The result shows that, first, the forms of TTD can be classified into 9 categories: (1) to request, (2) to advise, (3) to lead, (4) to support, (5) to interfere, (6) tooffer, (7) to offend, (8) to hinder, and (9) to counter. Second, based on the technique of speaking, female speakers or penutur Pejabat Perempuan (nPP) use the technique of literal speaking (37,65%) and the non-literal one (62,35%). Based on the technique of sending meaning, male speakers or penutur Pejabat Lelaki (nPL) use the technique of literal speaking (39,68%) and the non-literal one (60,32%). Both nPP and nPL use non-literal techniques more than literal ones. Third, based on the speaking strategy, nPP chooses direct strategy (38,82%) and indirect one (61,18%). Meanwile, the speaking strategy chosen by nPL, is (40,48%) for direct strategy and (58,73%) for indirect one. Therefore, the officialsprefer using indirect strategies in speaking. Finally, factors influencing the forms of the officials’s TTD are: (1) who the second persons are, (2) what the social relation is between nPP/nPL and the meeting audience, (3) what the social-societal status of nPP/ nPL is; and (4) the topic being discussed.

Abstract

The goal reached in this study is to describe and explain (1) implicature entity; (2) violation of cooperative principle; and (3) violation of politeness principle. The research is qualitative approach in content analysis and pragmatics theory designed. Data is humor discourse on Ini Talkshow program at NET TV, collected by recoding and taking a note. Data validation investigated by applying data triangulation. Then, data analyzed by using interactive models. The result study presented that (1) humor discourse of impicature entity on Ini Talkshow such as mentioning, expressing, refusing, instituating, judging, accusing, claiming, asking/want, mocking, evicting, and threatening; (2) violated of cooperative principle maxim such as quantity, quality, relevance, and manner; and (3) besides violating cooperative principle, the implicature expressing also violated positive and negative politeness. This violation was done deliberately in case to create the humor sense of audience minds.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were (1) to describe the form of the code-switching in selling and buying at Segiri market Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and (2) to describe factors of code-switching in selling and buying at Segiri market Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative and employed a sociolinguistics study in the form of Poplack approach. Data sources of this research were activities and informants. Meanwhile, the type of data was the form of speech in the conversation. In collecting data, (1) observation, (2) field notes, (3) recording, and (4) interviews were used. In analyzing data, Miles and Huberman interactive analysis and Dell Hymes, ethnography communication method was used. The result of this research shows that (1) Form of the code-switching in selling and buying at Segiri market Samarinda, East Kalimantan are (a) tag switching consists of 21 data, and (b) inter-sentential consists of 41 data. The data is taken from Indonesian language, Banjar language, Kutai language, Java language, and Bugis language, and (2) Factors of community language, culture, tribe, and environment existing in Segiri market Samarinda, East Kalimantan also influences the way of code-switching in selling and buying transaction at Segiri market Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the structure of debate and the difference of usage of modulation by the candidates in the third session debate of Pilkada DKI Jakarta in 2017. The debate in a general election was a new medium in the campaign. This research revealed the form and meaning of dominated modulation used by the candidates by applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This was a descriptive qualitative research using observation method in collecting the data. The source of data was a video of the third session debate of Pilkada DKI Jakarta in 2017. The data contained aspect of grammar and lexicon of the speech. Then, it was analyzed by using identity-method by Sudaryanto and content analysis suggested by Spradely. The result shows that there are two forms of modulation marker. It is modulation of inclination that is dominantly used by the first candidate and third candidate. Then, the second candidate dominantly uses modulation of obligation. The domination is a strategy of each candidate to defend and prioritize their programs for the next five years.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) mendeskripsikan bagaimana penggunaan homonimi untuk penyimpangan makna sebagai upaya membangun humor dalam meme. (2) Mendeskripsikan pola penyimpangan makna yang memanfaatkan homonimi. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode simak dengan teknik lanjutan catat. Analisis data menggunakan metode padan referensial dengan teknik hubung banding untuk mendukung kodifikasi, reduksi, penyajian, dan intepretasi sesuai dengan kerangka kerja penelitian kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan relasi makna homonimi meliputi kata dasar, bentukan, asing, dan slang. Ditemukan juga penyimpangan makna dengan memanfaatkan homonimi yang terjadi karena eufemisme, penamaan, dan pemberian jeda. Selain homonimi, ditemukan juga pemanfaatan homofoni dan homografi singkatan kata. Ada tiga pola yang digunakan untuk melakukan penyimpangan makna dengan memanfaatkan homonimi. 1) Kata yang disimpangkan didampingi dengan teks sebagai penjelas. 2) Kata yang disimpangkan didampingi dengan gambar sebagai penjelas. 3) Kata yang disimpangkan tidak muncul dalam simbol bahasa melainkan gambar dengan teks sebagai penjelas. Pemegang peran penting penyimpangan makna dalam meme adalah gambar dan penggunaan kolokasi. Kolokasi yang tepat mampu mengelabuhi pembaca sebelum akhirnya dikejutkan oleh makna kedua.
