Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan penerapan teknik peer editing dalam mengajar teks deskripsi serta untuk mengetahui persepsi peserta didik tentang penerapan teknik peer editing yang dilakukan pada siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 3 Surabaya. Peer editing atau koreksi antar teman sejawat diterapkan pada hasil tulisan siswa sebanyak dua sesi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi, dokumentasi dan wawancara. Observasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui penerapan teknik peer editing yang dilakukan guru dan pesrta didik selama pembelajaran. Dokumentasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui aspek-aspek menulis yang dikoreksi oleh peserta didik melalui hasil tulisan siswa yang telah diedit. Wawancara dilakukan setelah pelaksanaan peer editing untuk mengetahui pendapat peserta didik tentang manfaat yang mereka dapatkan setelah mempelajari teks deskripsi dengan menggunakan teknik peer editing. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualititatif. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa dalam mengajar teks deskripsi dengan teknik peer editing, guru melakukan tiga tahap utama yaitu pertama tahap persiapan, kedua tahap ketika mengedit, dan yang ketiga tahap sesudah mengedit. Persepsi sebagian besar peserta didik terhadap teknik peer editing adalah positif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa dengan bimbingan guru, peserta didik dapat memberikan koreksi yang tepat pada tulisan temannya sehingga mempermudah tugas guru dalam hal mengoreksi tugas siswa. Pesera didik berpendapat bahwa peer editing sangat bermanfaat dan sangat membatu untuk meningkatkan kualitas tulisan mereka

Abstract

Jurnal penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mendiskripsikan penrapan dari Reaching Beyond The Line (RBL) sebagai suatu strategi dalam pembelajaran reading untuk siswa sekolah menengah (SMP). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada siswa kelas 9 SMP negeri di Surabaya. Strategi RBL dilakukan di kelas sebanyak tiga sesi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi, dokumentasi dan wawancara. Kegiatan observasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui penerapan strategi RBL yang dilakukan guru dan pesrta didik selama pembelajaran. Dalam kegiatan observasi juga di lakukan kegiatan dokumentasi untuk mengetahui tahapan-tahapan apa saja yang di lakukan oleh guru dalam menerapkan startegi RBL dan juga untuk merekam tanggapan siswa saat proses pembelajaran membaca dengan strategi RBL dilakukan. Selain itu juga dilakukan kegiatan wawancara setelah pembelajaran berakhir. Peneliti melakukan wawancara dengan guru dan siswa untuk menangkap masalah atau tantangan yang telah dihadapi oleh guru dan juga respon siswa terhadap strategi RBL dalam pembelajaran yang telah di terapkan. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualititatif. Hasil analis data menunjukan bahwa guru melakukan pembelajaran menggunakan strategi RBL dilakukan dalam tiga tahapan yaitu yang pertama pengenalan dan persiapan materi, yang kedua proses memahami bacaan dengan teknik tanya jawab QAR (Question And Answer) dan yang ketiga diskusi memahami bacaan dengan lebih seksama menggunakan startegi RBL. Persepsi sebagian besar besar siswa terhadap strategi RBL yang telah diterapkan oleh guru adalah positif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, dapat diambil kesimpulan bahwa dengan penerapan strategi RBL dalam proses pembelajaran reading dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa untuk memahai teks lebih dalam dan siswa dapat mengambil manfaat dari pesan moral yang terdapat pada bacaan narrative yang sudah dipelajari oleh siswa. Dalam strategi pembelajaran RBL guru sebagai pembimbing bagi siswa untuk dapat memahami makna dibalik cerita yang menggandung banyak pesan moral dan siswa dapat mengasah kemampuan mereaka dalam berpikir logis dan kritis dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivation of Indonesian postgraduate student as an autonomous learner in overseas university. This study focuses on answering a research question; (1) how the learner motivates himself for being autonomous learner. The qualitative method was used to fulfill the objective of the study. The data was collected from interview section with the student. It was transcribed and analyzed descriptively. The result shows that the student is an autonomous learner who has intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning language in overseas university. It can conclude that this study will enrich the discussion which relates to students’ motivation for being an autonomous learner especially in overseas university. Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe teacher’s motives that underlie the use of communication accommodation strategies in secondary ELT class. This study employed a qualitative approach by observing the strategies used in ELT class and interviewing teacher to ask the reason for performing those features. The participant of this study was one English teacher from secondary ELT class. The result showed that teacher used more convergence features in accommodative strategies rather than divergence. Besides, teacher’s motives in applying communication accommodation strategies were categorized as affective motives to emphasize the closeness with students and cognitive motives to improve students’ understanding in classroom interaction. Teacher was dominant in cognitive motives rather than affective motives when using communication accommodation strategies in secondary ELT class. Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of communication strategies in an EFL classroom during the completion of task-based debate activity. This research was conducted in an English course located in Sidoarjo. The subject of this study are 10 EFL intermediate level students. In line with that reason, this research is a qualitative study since it focuses on the depth of the comprehension of the communication strategies data rather than computing it. For obtaining the data, the researcher do observation and records learners’ verbal and non-verbal behaviour based on Dornyei (1995) taxonomy of communication strategies during the debate activity. The result showed that all taxonomies by Dornyei are used by the subjects i.e avoidance strategies, achievement strategies, and stalling strategies in the debate. There are various reason for leaners to choose those strategies to overcome their communication breakdowns during the short-time debate between speakers such as because it’s time-efficient, less confusing, and sound trustworthy to lengthen their time to think, keep the communication channel at hand, and keep up the discourse at the moment when learners face the difficulties. As the conclusion, English debate activity is considered as one of the task that promotes students-centered learning in a TBLT class, provides opportunities for students to speak Engish, and challenge students to use their language sources to strengthen their arguments. In the debate, learners mostly applied stalling strategies such as fillers since is considered very easy and quick for learners to use when they encounter problems such as nervous, lack of vocab, and lack of grammar structure in the English debate activities. Abstract

The research aims at investigating the implementation of task based learning conducted by the teacher in teaching writing descriptive text for junior high shool students of seven grade.The student still have problem in writing especially descriptive text. The study examine show to the teacher conducs the task based learning in teaching writing trought some step and elaborates students’ ability in writing descriptive text.the research used qualitative approach because the result of the data analyzed was in descriptive phenomenom such a word, sentence and utterence. The data is collected from observation, interview and students’ writing. The analysis of the data was conducted thought categorization, data display and drawing conclusion. The subjects of this research are an english teacher and his students of VII grade. The result of the study indicates that the implementation of task based has many weaknesses in some aspects.The consuming time in doing the task is one of the matters. Students’ use of mother tongue instead of the target language makes the implementation of task based learning does not go as expected.In reference to the findings of the study, some suggestion proposed. The english teacher should use and design task which will not consume more time,so the step in task based learning will bwe accommodated in a meeting. The student should speak in the target language and the task based learning is implemented in order to reach the aim of this approach. Abstract

This study aims to know students making mistakes during the negotiation process based on their level of proficiency. This study was conducted at one of a university in Surabaya. The case study is used to know the differences of student’s mistake awareness in different level proficiencies. The instruments of data collection were observation, audiovisual recording and interview. The source of data was student’s utterances. This study showed that every criterion has different mistakes that students made during the process of negotiation of meaning. Abstract

This study aims to know how self-assessment is implemented in the classroom and how students perceive using self-assessment to assess their speaking skills. This research study was used qualitative research conducted at the state Islamic senior high school level in Sorong. The results showed that most students thought that self-assessment was very helpful because it allowed them to know their strengths and weaknesses and improve their communication with the teacher. Moreover, the second results indicated that self-assessment assisted students in increasing their speaking self-efficacy (confidence and belief in their ability), self-regulation (awareness of research, time management, independence), and engagement. In conclusion, the teachers use self-assessment in English classes successfully. Keywords: EFL Learners, Self-assessment, Speaking Skill, Students' Responses

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kesiapan siswa dan tantangan terkait materi pembelajaran digital. Jenis penelitian yang dipergunakan adalah deskriptif melalui pendekatan kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan observasi dan wawancara. Observasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui dan mengukur kesiapan siswa dalam menerima materi pembelajaran digital dan mengakomodir tantangan yang mereka hadapi dalam menerima materi pembelajaran digital. Sedangkan wawancara dipergunakan untuk memperkuat data yang belum ada. Persepsi sebagian besar peserta didik terkait materi pembelajaran digital dari sudut pandang kesiapan dan tantangan sebagai berikut: sebagian besar respondent menyatakan bahwa mereka siap dalam menerima materi pembelajaran secara digital. Sedangkan tantangan yang dialami oleh respondent yaitu terkait kepemilikan smartphones, sumber digital yang kurang memadai, serta keberagaman latar belakang respondent.

Abstract

Menggunakan pembelajaran digital merupakan hal yang mutlak harus dilakukan guru di era milenial seperti sekarang ini, karena kegiatantersebut sangat mendukung pembelajaran dikelas untuk bias menarik minat belajar siswa. Salah satunya, guru dapat menggunakan aplikasi CANVA untuk membuat pembelajaran menyenangkan, mengasyikkan, dan tentu saja meningkatkan antusias para siswa dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran. Peneliti memilih Canva karena diera milenial Sebagian besarsiswasudahmemiliki HP android, kemudiana plikasi ini menyediakan banyak pilihan template yang mudah digunakan sekalipun oleh pemula. Kegiatan penelitian ini menggunakan tiga cara untuk mendapatkan data secara akurat: 1). Wawancara, 2) observasi, 3) dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan 81,8%korepondenmenyukai CANVA untukdigunakandalampembelajaran dan hasil desain cukup menarik. Selanjutnya, siswa merasa tidak merasa terbebani dan bersenang-senang saat menggunakan Canva dalam pembelajaran, terutama untuk mendesain gambar atau kata-kata. Oleh karena itu, setelah melakukan kegiatan ini, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa 1) Media pembelajaran berbasis audio visual dengan aplikasi Canva sangat layak untuk pembelajaran dan 2) Kegiatan ini juga berdampak positif bagi siswa dan guru.
