Abstract

This study aims to (1) find out the persistence concept of fisherman as described in the Old man and the Sea novel viewed from Makassar perspective, (2) find out the concept similarity and different concept between two different cultures. This study used a qualitative method to analyze a text in the novel and viewed it from Makassar perspective by taking a reference book of discussing the Makassar culture and then study from a cultural perspective of Makassar to strengthen this research, the research also interviewed to fisherman as addition data. The finding indicated that there are four concepts on how persistent of a fisherman in catching fish. The four concepts are 1) struggle, 2) sacrifice, 3) personal concern, and 4) religious obedience. There are similarities and difference in these four concepts from two different cultures is struggle and sacrifice.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and to elaborate the form of technological abuse effects to social life as reflected in Shelley’s Frankenstein. The researcher used a sociology literature approach to find out the forms of technological abuse effects to social life as reflected in the novel. The primary data were taken from Frankenstein's novel and the secondary data were taken from library search including articles and journals. The researcher used note-taking in collecting data. The result of this research found two forms of technological abuse effects to social life that are illustrated in the novel, namely: Anti-Social and Procrastination.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe middle class women role in the 19th century in Bronte’s novel, Wuthering Heights, and induce a deeper understanding of effect each role on two characters in society. This research is a qualitative descriptive method using sociological approach. By using sociology of literature, a literary work is seen as a document of social. The data of this research collected from the descriptions and utterances of the characters and narrator in the novel. The result in this research shows that the role of women from the middle class were represented by the characters of the novel known as Catherine Earnshaw Linton, the main female protagonist and the motherless child and also Catherine (Cathy) Linton, daughter of Catherine Earnshaw Linton.

Abstract

Culture and literature differences raising birth of the uniqueness in every country that enriches the lives of the world community, including Butonese and English. This study aimed to compare patriotism values between the Selected Poetry of Tennyson‘s "Ulysses" and Kaimuddin‘s "Bula Malino" by using Comparative Study. This study identifies similarities and differences in the patriotism values implied in both of the poems. Through the Comparative French School Human Models and Heroes, this study analyzed the characterizations from both of the poems which possessed patriotism although the scope is differ. The concept of patriotism in Ulysses is related to the patriotic, loyalty, affectionate, sportsmanship, and heroism of a king, named Ulysses, to his kingdom, people, family, and his hobby. Whereas in Bula Malino, patriotism is shown by loyalty, affectionate, patriotic, and sportsmanship of Sultan MIK as the main character to his religious teachings.

Abstract

Folktale is part of classic literature that becomes the product of culture and disseminated as a reflection of a culture where the origin comes from. However, folktale characterization primarily for females character that is often described in powerless position because of poverty (weak economy), and careless until they take the wrong decision, thus they become the target of objectification. The researcher takes Mandarnese folktale as the object of this research to study the form of objectification that occurs to females character. This research is qualitative and descriptive. The researcher chose four folktales as the object of this research that was taken from the folktale book arranged by Bustan Basir Maras and colleagues entitled The Story of the Mandar People (Cari-Caritana To Mandar), The Stories of Mandarnese. The result of this research describes clearly the form of Nussbaum objectification version that found women as an object, objects of violation, women can be owned/bought/sold, and denial of subjectivity. In this research was also found that when women have power or supernatural ability they are often shown as sinister, and scary and need to be avoided because that is not a common phenomenon. But if it happened to men, they are often shown as powerful, dominant and strong.

Abstract

In this research is discussed about a local language that its existence is not well known, it is Kone’ Kone’e language in Bonde village, Campalagian district, Polewali Mandar region of West Sulawesi. People used to get this language wrong to be known as one of Mandarnese language, whereas this language is part of ancient Buginese language, the seventh dialect. Its existence among the majority language still survive eventhough its speaker is the minority. In this research the aim of the author is toreveal what factors behind the existence of this language to still survive, in this case the author has limited this study in the field of family, neighbourhood, and religion. The method that is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method where gathered all opinion, response, information in the form of description to reveal the problem. In defensing the existence of this language there are some factors such as lexical, demography, language usage pattern, and language attitude in the field of family, neighbourhood ad religion. Whole four factors have been done by the villagers in Bonde, that is why until today this language still survive in the middle of majority language.
