Abstract

Abstract: This experimental research aimed to find out the effect of using Cooperative script method to speaking ability of first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru. Most of the students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru often face some problems in speak English such as: lack of vocabulary, afraid of making mistake, not brave enough to speak in English and less participate in classroom. To overcome the problem, the writer used Cooperative Script Method in teaching and learning process. The population was the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru, while the sample was X Telkom as experimental class and X TKJ 1 as control class. The writer used cluster sampling technique to decide the sample and the instrument of this research was test in the form of dialogue test. The test included some topics such as; expressions of capability and incapability, asking and giving direction and invitation. The students’ scores were graded by the three raters using Brown’s scale and analyzed using t-test formula. The writer used the level of significance at 0.05 (5%). After being calculated, the value of t-observe) was 3.42, whereas the value of t table on the df (degree of freedom) 20 was 2.086. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between the students who are taught before the use of cooperative script method and after the use of cooperative script method was accepted and its null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, using Cooperative Script method advance speaking ability of the first year students of SMK Telkom Pekanbaru significantly.Keywords: Cooperative Script Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aimed to find out the ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru in writing narrative paragraphs. The population of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru, while the sample was 36 students of XI IPA 1 which was decided by using cluster sampling technique. The instrument used in this study was a written test. The students’ score were graded by three raters and analyzed by using Harris’ scoring system which concerned with five aspects of writing, such as content, form, grammar, style, and mechanics. The findings showed that there were 7 students (19%) in excellent level, 18 students (50%) in good level, 9 students (25%) in average level, and 2 students (6%) in poor level. It was also found that the students’ ability in terms of content was the highest among the other aspects, with the average score of 75,69, while grammar was the lowest one, with the average score of 60. The students’ average score for each aspect of writing was in good level. Based on the result obtained, it can be inferred that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru were able to write narrative paragraphs and their level of ability was in good level with the average score of 66. This study recommended the students to pay more attention in terms of grammar and style since the score of these two aspects were low. Then, the teacher should pay more attention,too, on these two aspects as well as the other aspects: mechanics, form, and content. Further researchers can focus on studying each aspect in details.Keywords: Ability, writing, narrative paragraphs.

Abstract

Abstract: this descriptive research was conducted in order to find out the taboo words in the fast and furious series 6 movie. The data were collected using the sociolinguistic approach. The data were in the form of utterances, while the contexts of the data were the dialogues uttered by the characters in the movie. The sources of the data were the video of Fast and Furious Series 6 movie and its transcript. The data were collected by selecting dialogues containing taboo words after watching the video and matching the transcript with the video carefully. The primary instrument of this research was a data sheet. The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, six of the seven types of taboo words occur in the characters’ utterances in Fast Six movie. They are mother in law, sex, death, excretion, bodily function and religion. From 59 data found in the movie, death has the biggest number of occurrence with 21 times out of total data (35.59%). The smallest number of taboo words’ type is sex and religion with 3 times occurrence (5.08%). Secondly, four functions of taboo words are found in the series namely to show contempt, to draw attention to oneself, to be provocative, and to mock an authority. The most appeared function is to draw attention to oneself with 42 times out of total data (71.18%). The lowest function is to mock authority with only 1 occurrence (1.69%).Key words: Sociolinguistics, Taboo Words, Fast Six Movie
