Abstract

Abstract: This experimental study aimed to find out the effect of using contexts clues strategy in reading comprehension. This experimental research was used one-group pretest-posttest design. The reason for conducted this research because students tend to used dictionary when they read English text in order to find the meaning of difficult word. However, they may not use dictionary or some stuff that can help them to understand English text in joining examination. This condition makes students difficult to comprehend the English text because they face different context. So, students should know about reading strategy to increase their reading comprehension without using dictionary or another instrument. One of the appropriate reading strategies to increase the students’ reading comprehension ability is context clue. The sample of this research was the first year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. The participants were 33 students as tryout class and 28 students as experiment class. The steps of research procedure are conducting pre-test, treatment, post-test and data analysis. The data analyzed by using t-test formula. The data analysis showed there is significant effect of using context clues strategy on reading comprehension. The finding also proved that in the pre-test students’ average score was only 71.17 and it improved to 84.00 in the post-test. Moreover, for the statistical analysis it was found out the T-observe 7.64 was higher than T-table. Base on this finding, it is suggested that context clues strategy can be used by teacher as an alternative strategy that can help students to increase their reading comprehension.Keywords: Context Clues, Reading Comprehension, Experimental Research, Reading Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out if the application of comic stripscould improve students’ writing ability of the first year students of SMA Negeri 9Pekanbaru.The participants were 35 students. The data was collected by usingobservation sheets, writing tests, and field notes. The test was used to collect thequantitative data and the observation sheets were used to collect the qualitative data.After accomplishing this research, the writer concludes that the application of comicstrips in writing recount text can improve the students’ writing ability. The result of pretestshows the average score of students writing ability was 37.94%. It improved to46.86% on the post-test in cycle 1, 54.73% on the post-test in cycle 2, and 62.83% onthe post-test in cycle 3. It was also proved that that the application of comic strips couldimprove the students’ behavior in learning especially in writing ability. They are moreactive and have a great motivation during the process of teaching and learning sincethey are free to explore their idea and share to their friends. In addition, applicationcomic strips could also improve students’ ability to write English in terms of grammar,vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension.Keywords: Application Comic Strips, Writing Ability, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aimed to find out the ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru in writing narrative paragraphs. The population of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru, while the sample was 36 students of XI IPA 1 which was decided by using cluster sampling technique. The instrument used in this study was a written test. The students’ score were graded by three raters and analyzed by using Harris’ scoring system which concerned with five aspects of writing, such as content, form, grammar, style, and mechanics. The findings showed that there were 7 students (19%) in excellent level, 18 students (50%) in good level, 9 students (25%) in average level, and 2 students (6%) in poor level. It was also found that the students’ ability in terms of content was the highest among the other aspects, with the average score of 75,69, while grammar was the lowest one, with the average score of 60. The students’ average score for each aspect of writing was in good level. Based on the result obtained, it can be inferred that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru were able to write narrative paragraphs and their level of ability was in good level with the average score of 66. This study recommended the students to pay more attention in terms of grammar and style since the score of these two aspects were low. Then, the teacher should pay more attention,too, on these two aspects as well as the other aspects: mechanics, form, and content. Further researchers can focus on studying each aspect in details.Keywords: Ability, writing, narrative paragraphs.

Abstract

Abstract: After doing a small observation in the process of teaching and learning English and having an interview with one of English teachers in MTs Bustanul Ulum Pekanbaru especially in the second year students. Most of the students were lack of interest to learn writing ability and their writing score were lower than KKM so the teacher and the researcher needed to find out the way to attract the students’ interest in learning writing ability. Students Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD)method was chosen to improve the students’ writing ability in writing recount text because STAD method could attract the students’ interest by giving a reward to the students in the end of meeting. Then, the researcher also want to introduce about cooperative learning method to the students through STAD method. This research was aimed to find out whether STAD method could improve the students’ writing ability. The participants were 31 students of second year students. All of the students were girls. The data were collected from August 21 until Sept 25, 2015. This research was an Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of three cycles, two meetings in each cycle. The research finding showed that STAD method could improve the students’ writing ability, the improvement could be seen from pre-test with average score was only 44,3 (Moderate) and post test-three increased to 70,6 (Good). STAD method was attracted and motivated the students in learning writing. It also helped the students to build their confidence and became more active in achieving their objectives. STAD methode could improve the students’ writing ability in writing recount text.Keywords: Students Teams Achievement Divisio (STAD), students’ writing ability, recount text
