Abstract

Abstract. This research was conducted based on the phenomenon of Indonesian students who experience obstacles in communicating in other countries caused by culture shock. The purpose of this research is to find out culture shock in cross-cultural communication experienced by Indonesian students who participated in summer course activities in Thailand. This qualitative research uses a method with a phenomenology study approach, because this research aims to find psychological meaning based on individual experiences of a phenomenon. This research uses the Anxiety and Uncertainy Management theory coined by William Gudykunst. This theory focuses on the communication process in order to run effectively. The data in this study were obtained through in-depth interviews with the research subjects of six students from Indonesia who had run summer course activities in Thailand for 28 days. In addition, research data was also obtained through non-participant observation. The results showed that there are many motives that encourage a person to take part in a summer course to Thailand, including the desire to live more independently because they are in an environment far from family and relatives, to get to know and learn new cultures and languages to open their minds and broaden their horizons. Other motives include the opportunity to study abroad and self-development. While studying in Thailand, there are five things that influence the occurrence of culture shock, namely mental readiness, food, spiritual journey, language skills, and cultural understanding. Indonesian students interpreted culture shock and cultural differences between Indonesia and Thailand by fostering a sense of tolerance for cultural differences, self-motivation, and self-development.
